Forums - Gaming - Games that excelled too much and ruined genres for you and why?

Red Dead Redemption 2 had such an excellent atmosphere that most other games feel dull to me since I played it. Also the graphics really impressed me. Not because of technical mumbo-jumbo, but because of the crazy amount of detail put into it. At least to my eyes, that looks better than most if not all raytracing stuff I have seen this far. But apparently Rockstar is about to show us what raytracing can do in GTA 6, lol. In many regards, not just graphics, Rockstar seems to be in a league of its own.

I can still enjoy other games, but RDR 2 was just something else and it is one of the very few modern games I played through multiple times.

Metroidvania after Super Metroid.

Nothing has been as great to me since.

There are some that really go above and beyond. If you can get over the furry aspect, Dust and Elysian tale is excellent. I would never recommend Hollow Knight as I think it's over complicated crap but Nine Sols, chefs kiss. There are a lot of small devs doing the genre over the past years and I'd have to assume you'd find some thing that would break on through to to the other side and come away with a greater love for. I am of the mind all genres have this (Apart from RTS games beating Starcraft) but people just won't leave their comfort zone and explore new titles.
