Introduction:

Goal is to follow the Nintendo Switch 2's journey through its entire lifespan regarding hardware sales.  I'll do my best to keep current; weekly, monthly, and yearly charts as the years progress.

I also want to provide links to other popular Nintendo Switch 2 threads that get created throughout the years to provide an area where they can be quickly accessed.

Charts, links, and any polls will be updated and or archived in the following 3 reserved posts.

Thread is inspired from Rolstoppable's The Road to 160m+ for Nintendo Switch thread.  Rol included a massive spreadsheet in the thread that I won't be replicating in this one.  At several glances it appears that it was a massive undertaking, and well beyond my means of focus and dedication.  If you've never clicked on the spreadsheet link in Rolstoppables's thread, I suggest you do so at least once and peruse the massive amount of information contained within.

Expectations:

The Switch 2 will be mostly sold out as fast as its restocked for the 2025 year.

A larger 3rd party support from the get-go and with hardware that will be able handle most of the releases that will be coming to Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles may lead to a faster adoption rate than the Switch 1 had.

What seems as an expensive launch price for the console won't seem so bad as time goes on, especially when compared to the Next Generation console launch prices.  Spoiler, the next flagship Xbox and Playstation aren't going to be cheap.

172,400,000:

A guess for lifetime sales that I posted in another thread that basically just says I think it can out perform the Switch 1's lifetime hardware sales.  I wanted to assign it a number and this one is as good as any at this point in the life of the Switch 2.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If all goes well, this thread will be getting updated periodically to 2033 and beyond.  Of course; this is pending my existence, as well as VGChartz's existence.  I always enjoy new console launches and watching their success or failures.

I do plan on purchasing a Switch 2 this year and am looking forward to building a large physical game library.  As Xbox and Playstation migrate to a more digital world, my gaming budget will migrate more so towards Nintendo.

If I have mistakes in future data entries, please don't hesitate to yell at me with corrections.

2017 was the Nintendo Switch launch year with 13.1 million consoles sold for reference for the poll.

Any reason why you picked 172m, as opposed to say 171m or 173m?  That number seems fairly precise.

It's just where it landed after running it through some basic/lame equations.  The initial number was higher but after calculating in uncertain economic conditions it brought it way down.  Then it went back up for population increases.  I'm not an analyst, nor a mathematician, so I wouldn't take the preciseness to mean anything.  I basically just believe the Switch 2 has more going for it, than the Switch 1 initially had, and will surpass its sales.

My belief on the matter is that the Switch 2 will experience greater success in its early years than the Switch 1 did, but once we get to the direct comparison to the COVID years. The Switch 2 will likely lag behind the OG Switch unless an unexpected event leads to an immense Switch 2 resurgence and or actual good deals from Nintendo with actual price cuts(unlikely)

One thing is for sure: By the time the Switch 2 reaches 172 million units sold (if it manages to get there), Sony will have found more units of PS2 hidden somewhere and will have claimed the PS2 have sold 180+ million units

Initially sure though what do you think will make up for the covid boost down the line? Cause I struggle to see the Switch 2 matching the Switch 1 let alone outselling it cause of that. Another thing is the only major region with notable growth potential is Europe and I don't see it matching its level of success in NA and Japan, especially the latter due to exports getting cracked down on. Also it seems you have its sales by year mapped out for this so could you share that?
