Fun fact: the Nintendo TV Color Game was the best selling video game hardware of the 1970s and of the first console generation.
Nintendo “won†the first generation.Â

You learn something every day - never occurred to me it was that popular, being Japan only product.

It sold 3 million, but back then, 3 million was amazing for video game hardware, considering that at the time, most video games were Pong clones and people thoiught they would be a temporary fad like the hula hoop. For comparison, the Intellivision, the second best-selling 2nd gen console, was estimated to have sold 3.75M. The Atari 2600 only sold 1.6 million between 1977-1979, and Warner Communications actually had to underwrite its losses when they only sold about 60% of their stock in 1978. It didn't explode in popularity until Atari licensed Space Invaders from Taito in 1980. In any event, it helped set Nintendo up for its success in the 1980s.
