It sold 3 million, but back then, 3 million was amazing for video game hardware, considering that at the time, most video games were Pong clones and people thoiught they would be a temporary fad like the hula hoop. For comparison, the Intellivision, the second best-selling 2nd gen console, was estimated to have sold 3.75M. The Atari 2600 only sold 1.6 million between 1977-1979, and Warner Communications actually had to underwrite its losses when they only sold about 60% of their stock in 1978. It didn't explode in popularity until Atari licensed Space Invaders from Taito in 1980. In any event, it helped set Nintendo up for its success in the 1980s.

Yeah, I looked up numbers - 3 millions for whole series of 5 consoles. I always thought Magnavox Odyssey is most sold single model console from 1st gen (I knew Coleco Tesltar series sold 1 million or so, but that's for 11 models), but it's quite plausible that Color TV-Game 6, which was cheapest, has outsold it significantly.

"Well... the Odyssey doesn't fuck around." - the AVGN

The Odyssey sold 362,000 units in its lifetime, according to Magnavox product manager Bob Fritsche.
