Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why is your favourite genre, your favourite genre?

I spent most of 2024 playing...

My favourite genre 7 63.64%

Playing games outside of my favourite genre 1 9.09%

Playing no games at all 3 27.27%

Total:11

This is a hard one for me, there's at least 1 game I like from every genre.
I don't know if I have any particular fav, but there are multiple genres I go back to. So I'll try-

3D metroidvanias (Metroid Prime, traditional 3D Zelda, Resident Evil)
VR Horror Games (I love the immersion)
Openworld/Adventure
Action Games (OOT ones like Bayonetta)
JRPGs
Nintendo Platformers
Nintencore (I know it's not a genre, I just made it up lol, but Nintendo also makes fun games and distinctive enough to recognise and group together)
Rare Hybrids (Metroid Prime)
AAA games with high end graphics, cutscenes, characters, story, etc.
Fun physics-based games.

Sorry for making a list. I always fail to come up with one answer in VGChartz threads. I did this in another thread recently for my fav Wii game. I think I written between 10 and 20 in a massive list lol :P

I have (or have/had in the household): ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amiga, NES, Sega Master System, Super Nintendo, Sega Megadrive, Gameboy, Playstation, Nintendo 64, Windows 95, Gameboy Colour, Windows 98, Sega Dreamcast, Gameboy Advance, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, Windows XP, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, Windows Vista, iPhone, Windows 7, 3DS, Wii U, PS4, Windows 10, PSVR, Switch, PS5 & PSVR2. :D

and I Don't have: Magnovox Odyssey, Any Atari's, Any Macintosh computers, Sega Gamegear, Virtual Boy, Sega Saturn, N-gage, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PSP, PSVita & Andoid Phone. Plus any non-mainstream consoles/platforms I haven't mentioned.

Great thing about being a gamer is things are so good and varied that it's hard to choose favourites and man, try to do a top 50 like the one in my sig and it's so difficult to order so many 10/10 games and masterpieces.

Turn based strategy and adventure games with a lot of puzzles is my favorite genre even if very few games from those genres are in my favorite games list.
I like them because even if I'm kind of stupid they can make me feel smart. One of my favorite feelings games can entice. Auto battlers, Heroes of might and magic, Phoenix wright and even some action adventures like Zelda and Uncharted can exemplify this.

Atmospheric action games with Diablo and RE4 on top are probably second. And yes my genres are a bit out there when I combine so vastly different types of games into the mix. But I tend to focus on how games make me feel. What both Diablo and Resident Evil 4 does so well is creating gameplay that make my heart raise. Feeling like I really need to step up to the task, testing the limits of my ability to stay calm and collected.

Sekiro should test the feeling of staying calm and collected if you've never played it before and it has strong vibes along with Bloodbonre which has the strongest vibes of any game and the level design is like a puzzle to solve.  Sounds like you'd love flow state games too like Ghost Runner, it combines all those genres together and has a distinct atmosphere, it's like one big puzzle you have to trial and error and then strategically progress your path and it'll definetly test your ability to stay calm and collected.

Sim games are finally out

Action/Adventure.

I love going on a long journey with great combat and exploration.

After that its just Action, like Bayonetta/DMC etc
Then RPG and Platformers in a tie.
Then RTS, only so low because theres barely any games like this now and I played a shitton of these as a kid back then it was my favourite.

HOWEVER, I like to play a variety of games, normally I don't play 2 games in same genre in a row for example, I like to vary things around.
This year ive played DQ3 (2D RPG), then God of War Ragnarok (Action/Adventure) then im playing DKCR HD (platformer) then Echoes of Wisdom (2D Adventure) etc

Do you find yourself having a hard time on boarding into annRTS/simulation title?

I have found the older I get the less I can pull the effort out of myself to play RTS, 4x, simulation games or games like them cause it's too mentally taxing and it takes sooo long to get to the meat of the game. I still enjoy turn based strategy games if they flow well and there is no random battles and once I do get into one of these more accessible genres like Two point hosptial I get madly addicted yet those are fun and in full swing from the first mission.

And then there's the imagination aspect which is strong as a kid for simulation titles but it's not as powerful as you get older so making your own fun is not really a thing as an as adult.

Not really but like I mainly play the expansions/dlc they keep pumping out for the Age of Empires / Mythology series, especially for Age 2 even tho its a 20+ year old game. Personally I learned RTS when I was like 5 years old with Age 2 so I don't find it mentally taxing/ I enjoy the battles when they come (and you get to choose when to attack yourself and where anyway, defending or dealing with raids is another matter)

Simulation I haven't played in a while, been waiting on Manor Lords to come out of early access, Cities Skylines 2 had mixed reviews etc.

But now that Civ 7 and 2 Point Museum 2 are out I might play a NEW sim game this year, if Ive got time. Probably just Civ 7 this year tho.

Edit: ALSO I tend to have more fun watching commentated matches for RTS, the pro players really makes things more fun than what I could do and you can learn the mechanics/strategies quickly in a fun way since you are just watching.

Nice to see another Age 2/ Mythology player. I will definitely be playing the Chinese expansion in Mythology this weekend. Do you play multiplayer?

CRPGs...but honestly, that is very...fluid.

I've been playing them for the most of my gaming life (so since early 80s), but I wasn't at the first that much into them. Then at second half of 80s I started plying D&D at the table and that was turning point for me - from that point on whenever I'm playing or DM-ing some TTRPG, I'm not playing CRPGs, since I find TTRPGs to be superior experience. But when I don't have anything going on at the table, I tend to go back to CRPGs. So I guess they are surrogate for the real thing for me, no matter how much I like some of them, and why when I have something going at the table I gravitate toward action-adventures and action-RPGs.

You were the only other person I could think of to inform. In case you didn't know, somehow, Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition by Beamdog just got a brand new expansion last month called "Doom of Icewind Dale" and it's actually supposed to be a direct story continuation of NN. I just picked it up for $7.50 to complete my NN collection bundle, and I'm looking forward to checking it out! Loving that those games are still getting some support.

Although this does remind me of the sting knowing we'll never get Icewind Dale II: Enhanced Edition due to the source code being lost

Here's the Steam link in case you're interested.

I just finished the campaign last night. Pretty short lol. It was only like 2-3 hours in length I'd say, yet still really enjoyable. But I LOVE the new myth units, especially the dragons! They did such a fantastic job on the animations.

$20 to buy the expansion standalone is some BS though lol. Good thing I got the premium edition. I'm hoping the second expansion will be dedicated to Japanese mythology!

Ah nice. Japanese would be great but I am guessing Indian is next. It seems most people don't get into multiplayer for Mythology, which is fine, but it is really fun still. Frustrating at times I can understand. I definitely feel like customs would be much safer this weekend due to the new gods.
