Will Playstation also go 3rd party?

Xbox releasing all their games on as many devices as possible has not been a popular move with it's fanbase, but is going to be the route they're going to take in an attempt to maximize exposure and profits to recoup development costs and maximize returns for investors.  There doesn't seem anyway of reversing this strategy in the next decade, because of it's long-term goals/results.

Talks also have the next Xbox being a device that will be both a Steam Box and an Xbox that can be as powerful as they want to make it (won't be sold at a loss).  Hardware wise they will likely offer up a handheld portable device, an entry level console device, and a high-end console device that will exceed a normal generational console leap.

This being uncharted territory could take many years for this new way of going forward to become accepted.

Now comes the question, Playstation is the market leader in the home-console market between the two, but are they already lagging behind Xbox in moving in the direction that Microsoft is taking the market?  Will it be harmful to Playstation by giving Xbox a head-start?

It's likely not a question of when Playstation makes the move to follow Xbox, but when?

Eventually, not anytime soon. Astro Bot on the Switch 2 would be profitable.

No playstation actually sells consoles box doesn't

Not out of the hardware business until Microsoft stops making consoles, and even then, I don't see it happening right then.
Sony is much more hesitant to put games on PC, and forget day-and-date so far. Also, Sony sells a lot more consoles.
I could see Sony putting some more games on Nintendo or potentially Xbox years down the line. But we're not there yet.
Spider-Man is an interesting one. Sony doesn't own Spider-Man as a property, and Spider-Man had tons of games from different developers and publishers across the years. It's the double-edged sword of putting the Spider-Man games on other consoles. It could pay off and a crazy amount of units or it could decrease PlayStation hardware units by millions.
Maybe Sony will test the waters this decade putting Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered on Xbox and Switch 2.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 40 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

No the only time I could ever see this happening is if Xbox leaves the console market permanently. Otherwise no. If Sony needs to further increase their profits they can start releasing on Nintendo Switch 2, well at least their back catalog. Like TLOU remaster.

They kinda already have. The Show is on Switch and Xbox. They put their games on PC. Not like it would be the first time either. Sony was publishing games on SEGA consoles before PlayStation. As for where Xbox is now as a brand. Sony will ride the hardware train longer. Probably not putting Uncharted collection on Switch 2 or anything. Likely stick to what they are doing now for a while.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

It would be kind of apt for Nintendo, the company that birthed the modern industry, to end up standing alone again. I wonder if Sega would rise from the ashes if that happened. Get Tom and Al to head up SOA once more and watch Nintendo and Sega fight one last, mortal battle for the eternal soul of the industry.

The Show is not by choice though as well all know. That's an isolated case due to MLB license. PC sure but other than the Show and Lego no other PS games have went to Xbox or Switch.

Eventually yeah though Xbox is declining so much they could just ignore that one platform while continuing to support PC and supporting the Switch 2. Things won't change that much in the next few years other than them probably releasing at least some games on the latter and maybe PC getting big single player games sooner but the 2030's is when big changes could potentially occur since Xbox starting to bow out is more than anything else a sign that the traditional console model is starting to become outdated. Nintendo will be able to resist this for longer thanks to the strength of their IPs and the extra appeal of the Switch concept though.

The difference between PS and Xbox though is that Sony will still likely be making consoles 10 years from now.
