So basically in your eyes, the only aspect that constitutes a succesor is just the name? Because its' definitely not the hardware.

Because the hardware in the PS5 is just an updated Playstation 4 in essence. - PS4 and PS5 both use AMD X86-x64, both use AMD Radeon graphics.
Just Sony is using more modern designs in the Playstation 5.

And the Playstation 5 Pro is using a more modern updated (And larger!) chipset that is found in the base Playstation 5.

I know some people see it different. Some of them are younger and did not live through the gens. I experienced the NES launch as a small kid. I am sorry but i can't just "mix up" generations. Some people say Switch is Gen 8, i even heard some saying gen 7 because its closer to PS3/ Xbox 360 power than Ps4/ XboxOne but i cannot agree with this. Its just my opinion but console generations should not be defined in power. It was like this in the 80s and 90s as well as in the early 2000s. It was 2006 when this confuzing deffinitions started because of the Wii. I also don't say DC and PS2 would be gen 5.5 only because they are clearly inferior to Gamecube and Xbox. Is the 3DS another generation than the Vita? Or is the DS another generation than the PSP? We should take this into account i think.

It's not mixing up.
It's a reclassification based on a set number of variables.

It's like looking through a database where you can sort and group different values based on specific values.

If people wish to categorize console generations based on power alone rather than company release cadence, year or hardware features... It actually doesn't make them wrong, it just makes their approach different from other established norms.

No. Everyone has their opinion. If i want to say David Bowie is another Generation than the Rolling Stones, despite the fact they where making music in the same time and and i take the argument that Bowie already died but the Rolling Stones are still alive and in the music business i can say that of course.🙂 I can also say that ACDC are not part of that generation because their style of music is different...

Yes, Nintendo Switch 2 will begin the 10th generation of video game systems.

1st Gen: Color-TV game

2nd Gen: Game & Watch

3rd Gen: NES

4th Gen: SNES & Gameboy

5th Gen: N64 & GBC

6th Gen: GameCube & GBA

7th Gen: Wii & DS

8th Gen: Wii U & 3DS

9th Gen: Nintendo Switch & Switch Lite

10th Gen: Nintendo Switch 2

pretty straight forward ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The 10th generation of nintendo consoles.

Doesn't mean it belongs to the 10th gen of consoles.
Nintendo is not a generation ahead of the PS5/XSX in any way, other than their own counting means.
But thats never been how we use the term "console generation".
Its always a holistic look, where you view the timeline and its competition in the market when it launches.
(ei. these consoles belong to the same generation because they compete against one another in the same time periode).

Console generation =  "these consoles belong to the same generation because they compete against one another in the same time periode"

The Nintendo Switch is launching... in what generation?
That's the gen it belongs to.

Even the Wiki for the Switch, says its 8th gen.

Hell even this forum which has a very large nintendo base (compaired to other two), less than half think its 10th gen.
Going by the vote here.

That is not "pretty straigth forward", its clearly a very mixed opinion.

That doesn't surprise me in the slightly. We have people that are convinced that Earth is plane. Its pretty hard to spread logic and common sense when there are people strongly tangled in their mental gymnastics.

Almost half agree that Switch and Switch 2 are 9th and 10th gen while the other half is done with this subject that shouldnt be a debate in the first place. Then we have a tiny (but very vocal) fraction that believe Nintendo released a console that remained on the same gen as its predecessor bc of some random and inconsistent rules pulled from their asses

If you all think so much about specs or visual technology, then make a separeted time stamp labeling "Visuals/Specs Generation" then we can determine a new generation by their upgrades. Consoles Generation is all about the next consoles release closiness and nothing else...

Be coherent... or dont! Keep with the nonsense! It doesn't really matter anyway

Quick, make a search on wiki and tell which gen they label Dreamcast. Then tell me its time in the market alongside its other gen counterparts

On wiki its listed as 6th gen.
However plenty of people contest that, and say its 5th gen.

Unlike nintendo, its hardware was powerfull for its time.
So it potentially launching between generations (as some see it), benefits it more than it does the Switch or Switch 2.
(also most of its sales were in 1999 (it only launched in 1998 in jp)).
It was on the market alongside the PS2 (a year after (2000), and xbox (2001), a year after that).

I think this is different than that Switch situation.

Damn, Switch is Gen 9 and Switch 2 will be Gen 10! Why is this even a debate?! I am also not going out calling DC and PS2 Gen 5,5 only because they where clearly inferior to GCN and Xbox!😂

Indeed, it was not the same situation, it was way worse than Switch, but you barely see someone bringing the issue, everyone is just fine with the 6th gen label, hence the Wiki data staying the way it is since the start. I am also fine with that bc Dreamcast is a succesor of the 5th gen Sega console: Saturn. See how easy generation consoles work? You should try follow that

If you were actually honest giving the data, you would say that Dreamcast was already dead almost 7 months before Xbox release, so the amount of days alongside Xbox and Gamecube were 0 and for PS2: 1 year and a few weeks out of the many years that 6th gen consoles remained on the market.

Since Dreamcast released by end of 98 and ended March 2001, that leaves 1 year and 5 months with 5th gen consoles only. With this, the holistic observation that you previously brought to us was slammed in the mud.

Knowing the issue, you pull the "power" and "Japan release didnt count" cards as if it would pass unnoticed how convoluted your reasoning is. Try harder next time.
