Forums - Sony Discussion - How much will the PS5 sell throughout 2025?

I still don't know how to create polls so forgive me, but I created this topic to see how much the PS5 will sell in 2025, especially if GTA 6 is released this year. 2025 seems like a much stronger year for new releases than 2024, so if GTA 6 is released this year I would expect around 20 million PS5s sold, thus surpassing the PS3's lifetime sales.

Greater than 24 if GTA6 releases.

I know it probably won't happen, but if they time this with a price drop...

It'll depend on GTA6 release date, number of PS5's produced, and pricecuts. If GTA6 is released in or before October, PS5 can sell up to 22 million without a permanent pricecut.

If GTA6 is delayed to early-mid 2026, I think PS5 will sell about 17 million in 2025, and 23 million in 2026 (because 2026 could be the year it finally gets a pricecut).

I'm not that optimistic. Games that release late in a console's lifespan tend to not massively affect hardware sales, especially if the game in question is a follow-up to a game that released on that same console already (See Tears of the Kingdom for an example).

Odds are also good that both PS5 and GTA VI will be hit with price hikes in the US due to the impending tariffs. It's hard to say how much that will affect overall sales, but it certainly won't help.

I was going to say like 18m..... .but I think a new GTA could easily add a couple of millions on its own, to that.

If GTA is this year, its going to sell more, and even the year following, will have a slight bump imo.
GTA would make the YOY % grow (instead of decline by small amounts).

If GTA VI releases, and doesn't have a surprise PC simultaneous launch that will move a lot of PS5's. With GTA VI potentially being the biggest video game launch of all time and the game only being on PS5/XBS with Xbox's sales in the gutter... This game should be able to move an astronomical amount of PS5's. I'm sure there's many PC gamers who don't own a console and will pick up a PS5 just to not have to wait a year to play GTA VI, and many that are still on PS4 that will do the same.

The PS5 should be declining in 2025, but I can see GTA VI launch month being a record breaking month for console sales so despite most other months being down YoY I think 2025 can beat 2024. So 19-20m.

If GTA 6 isn't delayed then 18-19m seems most likely. I don't think GTA 6 will cause a surge in sales as big as many are expecting due to just how many people will already own a PS5 by the time it releases but it'll still for sure have a big impact the period it releases which combined with the PS5 Pro helping sales and it looking like a huge year for gaming in general will not only soften the decline drastically it'll even give it a chance of ending up somewhat up for the year which would likely be its last strong year.

18.7m in 2024.

GTAV should add a couple of million sales? this isn't just me being overly optimistic... right?
(PS5pro for full year, and it being the best place to play GTAV.... should have a small effect)

So hopefully over 21m.... or so.

*IF*  it ends up doing like 21m in 2025.... that means by end of year, it will be around 92m PS5's sold.

Edit:
This is also "the year", that xbox really tripples down on putting their games on playstation (other platforms).
Halo,gears,forza....their big titles, I'm not sure what effect that has, but it might actually have some (ei. people dropping xbox for a playstation ect).
(there were rumors of ports in 2024 happending)

With GTA6, a 50 euro cut again or more and there is enough supply I can't see why not. This past year only marked the turn of the majority of player hopping on ps5, I'd also reckon there are going to be a good chunk of Xbox migrants, nothing really significant but enough to hold those sales up.
