Forums - Sales Discussion - Famitsu sales Week 52, 2024 - Week 1, 2025 (23/12/24 - 5/1/25)

The level of Switch domination is nuts. 29 out of 30 and 28 out of 30 games, at a time when PS5 Pro just released.

And the new Mario Party when into overdrive absolutely flying past 900k and 1mil.

We're gonna make some numbers here...

3.910+4.076+5.040+3.422= 16,448 physical games sold for PS5 in the japanese top 30, all Xmas season (from 9th December to 5th January).

Of those 16,448 copies sold... DQIII Remake sold 11,408 units. And Astrobot, the remaining 5,040. Only 2 PS5 games present during all those 4 weeks: 3 of them DQIII, 1 week Astrobot. In one of the weeks, PS5 had no presence at all in the top.

This is the situation for the PS5, in this last Xmas season in Japan.

Summary

During 4 of the most important weeks of the year:
PS5 games had 16,448 total sells in the top 30 (DQIII Remake being the 70% of it)
Average 16,448/4= 4,112 sells per week (inside the top 30).

This... is truly pathetic.

And worse of all, Sony can be grateful to SE, for getting a version of that cheap remake (is not a full 3D remake or something expensive) of an early 1988 Famicom game. A remake that, by no means, needs a PS5 hardware. Not even a PS4.

brother we are talking about video games sales figures.

And with the impending launch of Switch 2 and that looking like it will get even better 3rd party support than Switch 1, things are NOT looking good for the PS5 in Japan. Not even Monster Hunter Wilds will do much to turn things around.

The Switch already has FF 1-12 (minus 11, but plus X-2).  It already looks like SE is eager to put as much Final Fantasy on Nintendo platforms as they can.

1.5 million+ (with digital) for DQ looks a bit low tbh. FF VII remake made 1 million with only physical on the PS4, which was a much less popular system

But I guess it's still just a remake and remakes never sells that well in Japan

Only a new game can push it to 3 million range again I believe

I'm curious to see how much Monster Hunter will sell, in current state of the market is the strongest third party in market along with Dragon Quest

I'd estimate DQ3 is close to 2M at this point (with digital).  I'm looking at previous DS/3DS sales in Japan for remakes on this site:
https://vgsales.fandom.com/wiki/Dragon_Quest

DQ4 (DS)  2.33M
DQ5 (DS)  2.24M
DQ6 (DS)  2.21M
DQ7 (3DS) 2.07M
DQ8 (3DS) 1.33M

Assuming it's legs hold up, I think DQ3 HD 2D remake is going to outsell all of these previous remakes when you include digital.

2 million sales means a 40% digital ratio. Sounds a bit too much?

But there is something we are missing here, PC sales. Maybe it's close to 2 million including PC

https://x.com/DragonQuest/status/1864846226392588539 2m sales is already done since a month ago + i believe most of the sales is from japan, when you check the number of review from amazon japan, us etc, you see a huge difference

Yes, and is PRECISELY what I'm doing. You don't, by the way.
And to prove it, here's "a little more" of sales figures:

During the last 4 Xmas season weeks, in the Top 30 of Japan...
Switch got---> 1,581,691 games sold
PS5 got----------> 16,448 games sold

That means, literally, that PS5 physical games got 1% of the gaming market, DURING THE XMAS SEASON.

Or if you preffer: PS5 sold 1 game for every 99 Switch games sold.

Pathetic is a very gentle way to define this.

Now now, no need to exaggerate...

It's got 1.03%.

Whats the cause for the Astrobot boost? It physical sales trajectory was very weird. Felt like it had a consistent 4 weeks of single digit week to week declines then fell off out of nowhere.

Astro Bot is the type of game that should get a holiday boost, its only the weakness of the PS5 in Japan that prevented it from selling good numbers this holiday in Japan.

Yes PS5 sales are soooo bad. It got one great year in 2023 (at least for hardware), and had a good year going this year (again only for HW) until they killed it off with a price raise. PS5 is only going to drop from here on out. Sure it will have a few games the next few years that give it a short boost and that stay in the software charts for a while, but it's looking like a system that is essentially dead from 2025 onward, especially with Switch 2 coming out soon.

Switch 2 will likely kill off Switch sales (except some Lite sales) and also kill off most of PS5 sales as well.
