True Crime: Streets of LA comes to mind. It was a great game, but everybody was just playing GTA 3 back then.

I don't remember them overlapping, GTA3 is from 2001, Vice City form 2002, True Crime from 2003.

Anyway, very good game (New York City not so much, and then Sleeping Dogs really great).

Well, I can't talk about the market as a whole as I wasn't too interested into that at the time. But at least my friends played GTA 3 for years and only stopped once San Andreas released. We only had a few ones who liked Vice City. But most people kept playing GTA 3. Except for my pour soul who didn't have a PS2 or a proper gaming PC so I had to stick to True Crime on Gamecube, lol. Anyway, nobody but me cared about that game, which is why I had the impression the game was kinda overlooked. It's absolutely possible that I got the wrong idea though.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

In case it hasn't already been said: Literally any Horizon game. Zero Dawn released one week prior to BotW. Forbidden West released one week prior to Elden Ring. Call of the Mountain released a couple months prior to TotK (tho i thought it released a bit closer to TotK?? Ig not...). Not to say Horizon has remained "hidden under the shadow of these titans", though it certainly has always been overshadowed at launch by some massive release.

Extremely true of Horizon 1 and 2. They're very good games that have gotten overlooked due to releasing at the same time as generation defining games.

Being VR was I think the bigger reason Call of the Mountain got overlooked.

Kirby has a tendency to arrive a little too late. The biggest example is Kirby's Adventure which launched way after the SNES was a thing. It still did become a classic though, because it's that good. But still wasn't as recognized as it should have been.

Likewise Kirby's Dream Land 3 released on SNES when the N64 was available. But, Dream Land 3 was more overshadowed by Kirby Superstar, its superior prequel.

Kirby and the Amazing Mirror was released right at the buzzer, a few months before the Nintendo DS. Kirby Mass Attack was not so lucky, arriving after the 3DS. That one was really overlooked.

So, for Christmas, I was giving all 3 of the Shadow Hearts games as a gift. New World is sealed. Hope to start playing them for the first time sometime this year (added to the backlog).

Nice. In case you've played Koudelka, it's sort of a prequel to Shadow Hearts. But not necessary to enjoy the story of SH.

Just keep in mind that Shadow Hearts 1 was originally in development for PS1. They shifted over to PS2 later in production, which can be noticed in the visuals.
The atmosphere in SH1 is one of my favorites, along with Shin Megami Tensei 3 and Majora's Mask.

Yeah, it is quite overlooked, though I'm not sure about being overshadowed by some other release.

Mario Kart Double Dash did release few days later, Beyond Good and Evil and Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando few days after that, but not so sure that had much influence.

GTA-esque games generally tend to be overlooked by wider gaming audience, which is a shame, since I find a lot of them to actually be better than actual GTA.

Have you played Sleeping Dogs, which was originally to be True Crime: Hong Kong?

Yeah I think a lot of the 'negativity' to HZD comes from people switching to the next big release before the game got good. It takes a while for HZD to get going and a lot of people never got past the tutorial area which last 10 hours :/

I disliked TotK as well until past the tutorial sky island, BotW was an exception in being instantly gripping. Which was damaging to HZD. I switched as well, but glad I picked HZD back up after.

I liked Icewind Dale 1&2 better than Baldur's Gate 1&2 (except for Throne of Bhaal expansion).

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Titanfall 2!

Fantastic FPS with a campaign that is way better than it has any right to be along with a stellar multiplayer and movement mechanics but was released 1 week after Battlefield 1 and 1 week before Call of Duty: Infinite Warefare. Game was sent out to die and it did. Led Respawn to Apex Legends after that. What I would give for a proper Titanfall 3 though.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

Metroid Prime 3 is another one, at least as far as I recall.

Excellent game, but it released the same year as the likes of Mario Galaxy, Mass Effect, Bioshock, COD4, Halo 3, etc and so got lost amidst all the hype for other bigger games.

It's a shame cos it deserved better.
