Forums - Sales Discussion - Sony confirms PS2 has sold over 160 million

So turns out the former president of SIE who will have had access to the sales data wasn't rounding up after all as some claimed. They shouldn't have waited this long to finally update the sales total but nice to at last get a confirmation of it reaching 160m though it's still annoying they finally updated it but didn't give an exact number to fully settle things. At least the range has been significantly shortened and Zhuge says while the theoretical maximum is 161.8m it's definitely below that so I expect it to be around 160.5m.

With the PS2's minimum increasing by nearly a million the chance the Switch outsells it has gone down somewhat and it really could come down to the absolute wire at this point which is pretty exciting though as Trunks said hopefully it doesn't finish just above 160m and cause endless debate until Sony finally announces the exact sales total.

Still a glorified DVD player.

Hopefully Switch ends at 160.01 so we have a shared winner.

Over 1.5 billion PS2 games were sold. Only the PS4 and likely the Switch have surpassed that so what do you mean by glorified DVD player?

Also, PS2 games were very easy to pirate. Here in Brazil a lot of people who bought a PS2 never purchased a original game.

But oh well, this is the excuse some people have to justify why the PS2 is still the best selling console.

Yeah people often heavily overstate the DVD player aspect to downplay the PS2. It helped of course but the vast, vast majority of it sales came from it being a fantastic video game console that was a successor to another fantastic console.

Thats good to know. But still a little to vague

That was the reason we got one lol. DVD players at that time where we lived was $400-$500 range easily. But I do think it was primarily that launch window that people would’ve bought a PS2 as a DVD player because when 2001 rolled around…….it was over.

Devil May Cry

Silent Hill 2

Metal Gear Solid 2

Jak & Daxter

Grand Theft Auto 3

Ico

Final Fantasy X

Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec

Ace Combat 4

What a HELL of a lineup for a single year! It turned the PS2 into the gaming powerhouse it was and turned us who were mainly using it as a DVD player into practically a gaming only device.

So, why Sony dont tell us the exactly numbers?

Hypothetically, Switch sells something like 162-163M, Sony will just go in public and say "We sold more than this". Honestly, I'm certain that PS2 sold more than 160m + but I just dont understand why Sony dont give us the exactly numbers :X

Expand your horizons and get out of the Nintendo bubble. It's limiting.
