If Square had read the room and provided enough stock, DQ would probably be over 1m physical. Dunno what they were thinking under shipping a remake of such a massively popular game; either they were intentionally trying to push people towards digital, or they're exercising the same room temp IQ as when they make FF16 exclusive. |
I think they don't understand their own market. They specialize in JRPG's, but they haven't figured out a couple of key facts:
1) Their flagship brand is gradually shifting from Final Fantasy to DQ. Partly it's because they've done things to damage the FF brand, but interest in DQ is also slowly growing.
2) They underestimate the market demand for an old school turn-based JRPG. This is related to #1. They did this in 2018 with Octopath Traveler and now they're doing this again in 2024 with this DQ3 remake.
Partly they think that the market wants an action RPG, but what the market really wants is a QUALITY RPG. The market expects the best action RPGs to come from a company like FromSoft, while historically S-E has really knocked it out of the park with turn based RPGs. The market wants them to return to their roots.

I mean, we got DQ11 on 3DS in 2017 even after the Switch came out, so it's not unreasonable to think DQ12 will release on Switch 1 even after Switch 2 comes out. |

This is the closest thing the Switch is going to get to a brand new DQ release. The most popular system in Japan (and worldwide) has always gotten the latest new DQ game. However, there is such a big gap between the release between DQ11 and DQ12 that this series is ironically missing the best selling system of all time. Japan is hungry for a new DQ on the Switch and this remake is the closest thing that they're going to get. Considering how the Switch version is out of stock, that likely means the digital sales ratio is high. |
I bet the Switch will get Dragon Quest 12. Whether it's a downgraded version or a different version like how they made a 3DS version of 11. Dragon Quest 11 was originally going to be a PS4 exclusive, but they changed their minds and added a 3DS version because of it's much higher userbase. I doubt they leave out Switch unless this game comes out 2026 or later. |

Yeah not releasing DQ12 on the highest selling system in Japanese history would be a monumental blunder even by Square Enix standards. (Unless, of course, Switch is dead by the time it releases, and even then they'd be fools to skip the successor) |
Remember that this DQ3 Remake and DQ12 were announced at the exact same event several years ago. I am shocked at how long it took them to remake a simple NES game with improved graphics. Expect DQ12 to still be several more years away. Recall that DQ11 is a much bigger game with cutscenes and much more demanding graphics than DQ3 HD-2D. I expect DQ12 to be a similarly large game as DQ11 with graphics that will max out the Switch 2's hardware capabilities. I expect it to be released sometime in 2027-2029 on both Switch 2 and PS5. I really don't think it's coming to Switch.
