Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo confirms Switch's successor will be backwards compatible

As far as I understand it, Nintendo game cartridges since the Nintendo DS (and the PS Vita cartridges) don't use Mask ROMs anymore but flash-memory-based "XtraROMs"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Game_Card

Which makes me "a bit" worried about my DS-, Vita-, 3DS- and Switch-games on cartridges.

Correct. Mask Roms aren't used.
Nintendo are instead using two types of flash memory aka. NOR and NAND.
NOR is for the read-only part and NAND for the save data.
Consoles like 3DS used both in a cart the majority of the time to save data, but the Switch tends to stick with the NOR.

But at least, the durability seems to be a lot better than data on rewritable NAND memory (microSD cards and SSDs):
https://forums.atariage.com/topic/270216-nintendo-switch-cartridge-eprom-or-maskrom/

"As macronix had stated themselves, their "XtraROM" HybridFlash technology are guaranteed to hold data for at least 20 years, and that definitely doesn't sound like it's Maskrom to me. the fact that macronix had explicitly given us this estimate leads me to believe that they've already done all the relevant testing on these XtraROM chips beforehand which led to their 20 year estimation of data retention for this particular product."

The durability is definitely improved as you aren't doing reads/writes constantly. Plus the error correction algorithm helps to reset bad cells.
In saying that...

We are a 3rd of the way through those carts "projected" life times.

Since the Nintendo DS has its 20th anniversary this month (time flies!), the next years will be interesting with reference to reports about DS games stopping to work.

And the upside to "XtraROMs" is, that it's capacity should scale upwards (because it's flash-memory based) and should have similar cost reductions over the years as microSD cards and SSDs.

There have already been reports of DS and 3DS carts failing.
20 years aren't a hard number, it's when the volume of failures start to increase. - You will still have carts that will survive 40+ years.

Sounds like there is "more" to the backwards compatibility option from the way they phrased it.

My guess is BC is achievable through an emulation layer largely and they can do things like add higher resolution/higher frame rate patches as a result.

But of course the catch will be this ... you'll have to pay for those patches. Nintendo can make a fortune charging people $10-$15 for a "next-gen" patch of Switch 1 titles.

I hope for a "boost mode" similar to PS4 Pro / PS5 Pro for free... so more stable 30 or 60 fps and the upper ceiling of dynamic resolutions automatically.

And if they put more effort in Switch 2 enhancements (next-gen patches with better textures, better postprocessing, either higher resolution or double fps), I would pay $10 - $15 for my favorite Switch1-games.

I kind of want to convert my Switch collection to digital. I only went physical because I wasn't convinced Nintendo was going to unify their storefront.

But why convert it and putting all eggs in one basket?

Ain't it much better to keep all your options open with a mix of digital and physical games? Sometimes the physical version is a lot cheaper, sometimes the digital version is much cheaper.

I'll never understand the desire to go "100% digital" or "100% physical". Both have advantages and disadvantages.

I'm lazy and like the convenience.  No better reason.  Plus if I convert I can pass my physical games to the kids.

WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! YEEEEEEESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!! NSW2 IS BC!!!!!!!!!🎉🎉🪅🎉🪅🎊🎊🎊🎉🎁🎉🪅🪅🎁🎉🎉🥳🥳🥳🍾🍾🍾🎉🎊🥳🍾🍾🥳🎊🍾🥳🎊🍾🥳🎊🥳🍾👏🏻👏🏻🎊🥳🍾🥳👏🏻🎊🎉🍾🎉🎊🙏🏻

With BC and the expectation of Switch2 being noticeably more expensive this is great news. It means you'd be able to trade in or sell your Switch and still keep playing your games. This will help adoption rate of the Switch2 surely.

Considering the market the Switch is in now, I don't know if the trade value for any model will be that much considering how many of those are on the market right now.

But yes, it's definitely much easier now for those invested in the ecosystem for this whole generation ... Meaning I can keep my physical Switch collection with the Switch 2 collection in the future !!

This will make one busy shelf 🤭

Something not many people know: I am sure everyone turned their Switch cardriges around and looked at it. If they are green and black its a 16 GB cardridge, if its only black its a 32 GB one. The maximum storage capacity is 64 GB but there is currently (to my knowledge) no game that big on cardridge. Would be interesting to know what it would looks like...
