Nintendo needs to strengthen third party ties they don't have the wii u library to fill out the back catalog and the gamecube is already being tapped when they get through thise they'll only have wii and 3ds remasters. They need more third party developers making games in nintendo series, grezzo and mercury steam are good starts, but this needs to expand especially if development cycles continue to grow.

I don't understand why we have to go through such mental gymnastics when we have the yearly sales for gameboy and I provided the source and the numbers based off another user's thread:

You requested a metric so you could put numbers together. That is your request.
It's your own fault.

I just took it a step further to break it down and make your life easier.

But if you cannot see the issue of grabbing a Nintendo handheld and "combining" it with the sales of a home console that launched an entire generation later... Then there really is no assisting you in this matter.
You need to come to terms with the fact you are messing with numbers... Just so Nintendo loses one less console generation.

I have also provided evidence directly from Nintendo... So using vgchartz shipped numbers is irrelevant, you don't get a more accurate number than from Nintendo themselves, unless you are trying to push a bias.

The topic is not even this, I'm trying to be collaborative. This isn't a home console versus home console question but a market leader vs competitor question. So including portables and home consoles is completely legitimate. Why we talking about faults nothing needs to be negative here. I just asked you for a breakdown, provide the console breakdown and let me crunch the numbers for you, that's what I asked for.

Anyhow I'd like to talk about how Nintendo can maintain its leading position.

Completely agree. Do you think they should partner or purchase a key 3rd party?

What are you even on about? I never said it was a home console vs home console question.
You are trying to change the discussion to ignore the stats.

...So I'll just do the work for you.

  • NES @61.91 million consoles sold vs Sega Master System (Includes tectoy) @19.17 Million. - Nintendo Won.

  • SNES @49.1 million +Gameboy @64.39 million (113.9 Million total) vs Sega Genesis @30.75 Million + Sega Gamegear @10.62 Million (41.37 Million total) - Nintendo Won.

  • N64 @32.93 Million+Gameboy Colour @54.3 Million (87.23 Milion total) vs PS1 102.49M PS1. - Nintendo Lost.

  • Gamecube @21.74 Million + Gameboy Advance @81.51 Million (103.25~ Million total) vs Playstation 2 @158~ Million. - Nintendo Lost.

  • Nintendo Wii @101.63 Million + Nintendo DS @154.02 Million (255.63~ Million total) vs Playstation 3 @87.4 Million + Playstation Portable @82 Million (169.4 Million) - Nintendo Won.

  • Nintendo WiiU @13.56 Million Nintendo 3DS @75.94 Million + Nintendo Switch @ 143.49 Million (232.99 Million Total) vs Playstation 4 @117.2 Million + Playstation Vita @16 Million (133.2~ Million total) - Nintendo Won.

  • Switch 2 (TBA) vs PS5 @61.94 Million. - Sony Winning.

This is a better reflection as it's aligned by generation.
As we can see from the years of 1996 (Nintendo 64 launch) until 2006 (Wii Launch) Nintendo was the loser.
Every other period that have been the leader in terms of total hardware units.

No it isn't a better reflection, the best reflection would be by year, and where we have it I used it, where we don't (or I don't have the values), I used the gens.

Anyway this is just not an interesting conversation, I recommend we get on topic.

1) You haven't gone by year. I have. Hence the breakup of the Gameboy and Gameboy Colour.
2) What is interesting is irrellevent, let's stick to facts and sort the bullshittery out.
3) It is on topic as we are discussing Nintendo's market-leader position and your ability to conflate numbers to reinforce already established biases.

If you truly wish to have a year-by-year break down, I did provide numbers directly from Nintendo which has yearly hardware numbers, so get to work making that graph.

No you haven't, the other gameboy models were also selling at the time of the N64. Stop, I don't want to argue about it.

Games. Games. Games.

We're now past the point where the hardware is the major limiting factor...

Haha. Admission you lost the discussion.

The Gameboy released an entire generation before the Nintendo 64.

Switch's primary competition was the Xbox One and Playstation 4. - They are the same generation of hardware and graphical feature sets.

Gameboy came out in 1989, there is no way it gets paired up with the Nintendo 64 which came out in 1996... I was using the Gameboy alongside the SNES with the Gameboy adapter before the Nintendo 64 was even a mention in magazines.

Basically you have fluffed with the hierarchy.

You may have a point on Gameboy, but you put yourself nowhere better than OP by arbitrary labeling Switch as 8 Gen:

Many new generation consoles have competed with previous gen before the release of their generation counterparts. Ex: Dreamcast and X360

You talk about graphical capabilities yet put Wii and Wii U respectively as 7 and 8 gen consoles.

Also, Switch 2 as 9gen? My God, you are really consistent in not trying to make sense

An open letter for y'all that insist in keeping Switch out of this generation, despite this thing still selling well and receiving the current software support from its developer for 4 years since their generation counterparts release and going towards 5 years without its successor release:

Your poor reasoning is only held by a misstep on Wii U ideal trajectory, so if Nintendo managed to hold Wii U for at least one year more before the transition to Switch, this baloney wold be blown

Yeah, I know... 3rd gen below was all messed yada yada, but let's just not bring it back now when everything got so organized. So whatever agenda you are behind to keep this crap, just drop it. Ty
