I blame Epic games.

I'm going with an expanded stages of grief theory. When people started buying the Wii like hotcakes, the doubters used either one or all of the following major coping strategies; the "fad" defense, "no ones gonna buy games" defense or the "casuals" (and the closely related "your not hardcore") defense.

This denial persisted long and hard, flying in the face of sales figures and logic lasted until the arrival of the dynamic duo, Smash Bros and Mario Kart. Smash Brothers was supposed to be too core for the casual Wii base and Kart was supposed to be selling only to the "Marioboys" who had all already purchased the Wii, obviously. A logical conclusion, considering the number of Wii's sold prior to the arrival of the dynamic duo was almost exactly equal to Gamecube numbers plus extras, the infamous soccer mummies and wii-mote wielding grannies. Scarcely less than two months later Smash Bros has hit nearly 5 million units in a race that I'm willing to bet isn't even half run and Kart's hit nearly 2 million in as many weeks with engine's still idling, and a territory still up each of their respective sleeves. The anger phase typically doesn't last that long so I'm just going to let that play out but watch out for my next article, "Wii-fit and the bargaining phase";)

it's just because Wii is now on it's top, SSBB + Mario Kart + Wii Fit and sales a lot higher than Nintendo Ds!!!

GTA 4 is releasing soon. It will sell extremely well and temporarily boost the sales of the PS3 and the XBox 360. The people saying that people will be getting sick of the Wii soon will say told you so. They want to be right about something for a small bit of time because they have been so wrong. They know that after the temporary spike in sales from GTA4 that both high def systems will fall back down to around the sales we are seeing now and that they will then have to hide their heads in the sand. You see, this is the Alamo for them.

Basically, it's PS3 fanboys getting out of pocket. That's all. Notice, most 360 fanboys won't get out of pocket on the Wii ... it's the OTHERS. As long as you Wii boys and gals are on top, who cares? Is it stopping folks from buying a Wii? I don't think so.

I think that this week the antiwii movement is for gtaiv.

GtaiV sold two days after mkwii and a week after wi fit but ps3 + xbox is more user base. I think that if mkwii and wii fit (one hardcore and one casual game)outsold the two version of gtav ( mix of casual and hardcore ) I think gtaiv bomb. Bomb not for rockstart bomb for ms and sony

Looks like Joystiq picked up the NYT article and ran with it and to back up their claim they are citing horribly outdated Wikipedia sales figures.
