In the end it's about the games. I buy every Nintendo console, Home, Hybrid or Handheld, if the games are appealing. And usually they are.

Interesting. Would they have to be tried and true Nintendo IP for you? Or would you stick with Nintendo if they tried something new, like the first party devs actually not working on old IP to create new IP. Which would you prefer? Would ya give up on them if they stopped producing Nintendo IP for new stuff?

Considering mine sits in the dock all the time and I use a regular controller, Yes. It's just an awkward console now.

An awkward console that hits below 720p. I know you have a good TV ad we were discussing HDR, do you find the switch to be painfully bad on TV?

Yes, but it needs to be $399-$499 and worth every penny in terms of the hardware.
It also needs most 3rd party games, and those games need to launch in a similar timeframe to PS5, not 6 months later.

A $299 Nin home console won't cut it, and I'm not buying that and a PS5. In that case I'd just get PS5 when it drops to $399.

They're never hitting 299 again even if it's hybrid and yes, I definitely want them to add in some beef, I'd pay 500 max but that 400 price tag even in times of inflation seems like the perfect goal as it was with the ps4 way back in the day. 400 feels like an investment, 500 feels like your parting with money. Hopeful 400 with them eating the cost of some of the tech.

Most Nintendo IP appeals to me, but not every Nintendo IP does, or appeals to me on the same level to make me buy a console. But the most important is the games itself.

I see that Nintendo is able to re-invent their existing IP into new gaming experiences most of the time. Sometimes it hits for me, sometimes it does not.

Example: I am a HUGE Zelda fan, but the touch control Zelda's on the DS did not appeal to me. So I did not buy these games and I also did not end up buying the system in the end. The more traditional controlled Zelda games on the 3DS though did appeal to me, so I bought that system.

In the end I would look at new IP in the same way. I would buy, if it's appealing to my taste. Let's say if I compare two newer-ish IP like Splatoon and Endless Ocean. I would buy a new Nintendo Console for Splatoon, but not for Endless Ocean.

If Nintendo for some reason would not make games in existing franchises anymore, or would simply limit the number to work on something else, I would still assess it on game-level to make my purchasing decision. But I do confess that Nintendo first party games are the number one reason to buy a Nintendo console or not.

I would be beyond excited to get a home console again. I had a Gamboy back in the day and loved it. I also had a GBA, a DS and a 3DS... but their home consoles were my first love. So for me, them leaving the home console market and releasing a handheld that could be played on the TV... it was more than a little hollow. To think Nintendo left he home console market... ugh. It's sad. So if they came back? First in line, launch night!

They should have fought to keep stuff like Octopath Traveller exclusive. That's what I wanna see, them creating IP like that. Can you imagine how amazing an RPG would be from the team that made Tears of the Kingdom? It'd give Baldurs Gate 3 a run for its money.

Same as you though, it really depends on if Fire Emblem is doing well. Three houses is the main reason I bought a Switch and wasn't disappointed but if they created a new strategy RPG that looked just as good I might be in for that too. However I am a bit over Nintendo IP, sick of the same aesthetics even in reinvention, as great as Mario Galaxy was I'd have loved to see someone but Mario in there. Same for Oddessy. I'd just live to see them reinvent but with different aesthetics.

It would be something to see an RPG like Baldurs Gate. Nintendo has Xenoblade, but I can't get used to the battle system in those games. I am curious what Monolith Soft next big thing is going to be.

About Mario, I guess for me I had some times when I took a rest from the Plumber. Loved him in the NES, SNES and N64 era. Could not care less during GameCube era. Galaxy re-ignited the flame, but the NEW Mario Bross games did not. Odyssey & Wonder though I am a big fan. For me I would not mind if there are only a few outings, so it remains special and mix it up with e.g. Donkey Kong or something else.

Yes, if it's a unique console like Wii U and prior home consoles. Nintendo is my favorite publisher and Nintendo EPD is my favorite developer. By default, I'd have to buy the console to play some of the Nintendo exclusives. I saw the Wii U struggling by time I got it in mid-2014, but took the leap for Mario Kart, 3D Mario, and Smash.
If it's a home console version of Switch 2, I'm on the fence. I used to barely use Switch in handheld mode, but for the past 2 years at least I've been mostly using it in handheld mode. But if the Nintendo games take advantage of the specs more than a Switch 2 docked, I'd probably have to buy it.

I personally would, as I consider Nintendo to be the best developer in the industry and I want to play their games, but from Nintendo's point of view it wouldn't make sense to go back to a dedicated home console when the handheld audience makes up a huge portion of their player base.

"Nothing below 1080p" isn't happening either; there are sub-1080p games even on PS5 and Xbox Series X, and there will be even on PS5 Pro too. Sacrificing pixel count for better shaders or effects is up to the developer, and some will always choose this route.

@bold: this is my take as well. Portable, stationary, underpowered, overpowered, built into the side of a four-slice toaster — it doesn’t matter. Nintendo is the best publisher/developer on the planet, and I simply need its games in my life.
