Forums - Movies & TV - Another massive bomb: The Crow reboot flops

https://deadline.com/2024/08/box-office-the-crow-bombs-analysis-1236050350/

After a long and troubled development that began in 2008, the reboot of the 1994 cult classic The Crow has hit theatres, and it's another box office bomb, grossing a pitiful $4.6 million in its opening weekend, against a budget of $50 million.

I wasn't interested in it anyway because I knew how difficult it would be to be better than the original. Brandon Lee died making the original Crow movie, making it a heartbreaking farewell performance from him. You just can't replicate that. -_-

It seems like Hollywood is still struggling to recover from Covid. I don't envy them.

I didnt even know there was a new one.

Never was going to do well. Why they put 50 million into it and then left it to die is beyond me.
Not everything needs a 50 million budget.

Honestly, it was fine, in a generic 2000s action movie kind of way. Fun in some ways, baffling in others, but overall doesn't quite mesh. Not good, but not the worst way to spend 2 hours. I haven't seen the original, though. All I ever knew about it was that the lead actor died while filming it, so I had no baggage for this new iteration in that regard.

Covid is an issue but I'd say its lower on their problem scale.

Hollywood budgets are out of control

Writers are bad

Actors keep striking when their likeness has the least pull movie stars have ever had

Half of the releases these days are remakes and/or sequels to known properties that people don't care about anymore.  Add to this that studios panic like crazy and reshoot everything and focus test films into what may or may not be trends that just come off cringeworthy.  I don't think the young audience cares about going to the movies either, like at all. Older folks can't be bothered to budget around it and will just wait for it to come to streaming services, outside a Barbie or kids movie.  Most of their profit isn't domestic, that's if they can profit - usually off a known IP if the top 20 of this year is anything to go by.

Hollywood is in it's Blockbuster era, I give it 10 years before theaters start to shut down bi-monthly.

"You should be banned. Youre clearly flaming the president and even his brother who you know nothing about. Dont be such a partisan hack"

Honestly, good riddance. They never should have remade this. People can just watch the original. Not everything needs a to be remade.

I don't think we can still blame covid for box office flops when we've seen plenty of films perform well post-pandemic.

The goth superhero trend was a thing of the 1990s: Blade, Spawn, Batman, Darkman, The Crow were basically the top acts of that decade.

I don't think anyone cares about it right now.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

No surprise here. Whosever idea it was to reboot this, and whosever idea it was to greenlight this should be fired. Nobody asked for this and was DOA the minute the first trailer was released.
