Forums - Politics Discussion - Concord is Sony's biggest failure in gaming history.

No amount of marketing can salvage a game with no interesting visuals or concept. If this was a Hero Shooter with famous characters from their other gaming IPs they at least would have a selling point to the fans of said franchises

Didn't help PlayStation All-Stars.

It helped though, sold over one million copies. With stronger IPs I think could maybe sell close to 2 million if released today

Still very meh sales, but compared to how Concord is bombing it looks like an amazing success lol

Maybe to not quote the tweet of a well known PS hater would be better.

Anyway it doesn't take anything from concord failure but ... Helldivers 2 first million was mostly on ps5 so until we don't see the table of sales of August and September we won't know how much of a failure Concord is. In any case as I already wrote in the main threat of PS in this site Sony did even less to market this game that what they did with Helldivers (and they didn't do much for Helldivers) so I think the new administration knew this was going to happen.

Personally I don't have anything against services but has to be the right service, for example I do believe Media Molecule who are in theory making a service will make a great game because their games have been always services without monetization, LBP was a level editor, Dreams a game editor. Dreams is basically Roblox but pretty and without monetization so they already are good in that kind of game design they just need the right business plan.

The woke or anti woke bs is something I wont touch because MANY people use that topic as an excuse to insult others so that is something that doesn't interest me.

The 54th best seller on PSN launch day probably is not a good sign either.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

You know. I'm not an expert in game development by all means, but from my limited understanding that I accumulated over the last 30 years of playing video games, I knew from the very first reveal that this was dead on arrival. There is nothing in this game that is appealing or feels fresh. Zero.

Apparently it was developed for 8 years. 8 years!!!! Come on, did the test players not say anything? Did they even hire test players in the first place?

This is not a game made from creative developers. It's the result of a brief chat between two financial officers at Sony during their lunch break envying the success of Overwatch, so they made a quick cheklist on a napkin in the office cafeteria. My best guess, anyway.

It does? Boy, that is going to age poorly.

Apparently so. Here's the full list:

  • Pac-Man
  • Warhammer 40,000
  • Concord
  • Mega Man
  • Unreal Tournament
  • New World: Aeternum
  • Armored Core
  • Spelunky
  • Honor of Kings
  • Sifu
  • Dungeons & Dragons
  • The Outer Worlds
  • Crossfire
  • Exodus
  • PlayStation (will feature numerous PlayStation games/characters)

Ok, what do all of these have in common? This list looks like they picked everything they could without regards of theme or cohesion. A shame, I miss Unreal Tournament a lot...

You know it deserves the GOTY.

The show is an anthology from some of the creators of Love, Death & Robots which is also a very popular anthology show.

Even anthology shows need a throughline. People who hear about this are only going to check out the episodes of the series they like and ignore the rest of the series.

I don't really agree with that, that's the whole beauty of anthology shows, the episodes or seasons can have absolutely nothing to do with the previous ones, that's why I personally love anthology shows and think there should be more, not only because I very much enjoy the short-form storytelling which gets right to the point and sometimes leaves you wanting more but also because it allows creatives to flex their creative muscles and go all out with no worry about "following the plot" or whatnot and working their episodes into what the other episodes said/did.

And if one episode or season is bad? Doesn't matter, because the next has absolutely nothing to do with the previous and we start fresh.

If people only want to watch the episodes based on the videogame IPs that they personally enjoy then that's fine but I think a lot of videogame fans will check out most of them, I will watch the entire thing, again, that's the beauty of anthology shows though, if you don't want to invest in the entire season then you don't have to and there are plenty of interesting videogame IPs that will never be adapted to TV or will take years to be adapted to TV so this is a neat little treat for those fans.

Love, Death & Robots have a lot of episodes which not only have completely different art-styles, they have absolutely no connection to previous episodes in the series or any overarching theme connecting them to previous episodes and while some anthology shows do have a overarching message, like Black Mirror which is heavy on themes of warning us about misuses of technology, although even that is debatable now that the show is delving into fantasy horror, it isn't necessary for an anthology show to share an overarching theme or message, Imo.

But please give a lot more horror anthologies, those are the best.

it was #1 in my country and my country doesn't really buy anything outside fifa, dragon ball and cod. Yes It was surprising for me too, no I didn't buy it lol.

Now, I'm not saying concord is not a failure, I know it's a failure. I just think that just because Sony services are on pc we shouldn't take SteamDB as the only truth.

It's like Helldivers 2. Most of the big gaming sites and many haters use Helldivers 2 player numbers on steamDB to say the game has failed when in reality it's a $40 game that Sony was only expecting to sell one million (words from the AH ex CEO who still works at AH but isn't CEO anymore), it doesn't have a predatory monetization so you actually don't need to spend any money in it and the game sold 12 million as of march and is still selling on both pc and ps5 without a pricecut. They could end the servers this year (they won't) and the game still would be a huge success. SDB numbers are a good reference but they don't tell the whole story.

The Concord servers had to be part of the budget for the game, August and September sales will tell how much money back they made and at this point some money is better than no money lol.

This is just me making some math but based in the % of people who actually give a grade to games on PS (between 10%-15%) we can project the game has sold around 50k copies. A failure obviously and it's only a hypothesis but still way better than the "Look, look it has 600 players on steam and the sites that make estimations say it has sold 6k copies!".

(i) Is there precedent for Sony closing studios which deliver underperforming titles? I’m genuinely asking, I don’t think there exists such a pattern…but I could be wrong.

The studios that underperform tend to get closed.

Evolution was closed after Driveclub did poorly.

Guerrilla Cambridge was closed after Rigs.

Incognito after Warhawk.

Manchester Studio was closed after they spent so long, without a single game.

A lot of these studios though have a few failures under their belt. There's not a lot of precedence for Sony closing a studio after a single failure.

But games take a long time to make these days. Big question will be whether they support Firewalk through another say 5+ years of development.

There's plenty of good out of the reviews. It doesn't seem like it's a wholly awful game. The gameplay sounds like it is excellent.

I think just overall, it's a game that probably would have been better off coming out like 8 years ago.
