I thought the Vita was the one that needed adjusting, does this put Vita below WiiU?

No. Despite Sony's meddling with its reporting for handheld numbers, 82.5m for the PSP doesn't take away enough from the Vita side of the equation. It doesn't matter anyway, because the Vita is a bigger failure than the Wii U regardless of their final sales numbers.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.

Thanks!

About the PSP production numbers. Obviously produced units would also have been used internally for testing, demo's and such. But that would not explain the gap of 6 million.

The gap is explained by the latest shipment figure being for March 2012 when the system was actually produced until some point in 2015, so there are three years unaccounted for.

Sony has the PS3 shipment figure (sell-in) listed as "More than 87.4 million (As of March 31, 2017)."

https://sonyinteractive.com/en/our-company/business-data-sales/

But yeah the confusion was due to Sony combining PS2 and PS3 shipment figures for several years. The possible range for the PS2 was around 158.7M to like 161M.

Interesting enough Sony has the PSP at "More than 76.4 million (As of March 31, 2012)," while Shawn Layden revealed the final PSP figure was 82,523,607, with the final production date of September 26, 2014.

Thanks!

No problem! The difference is more to do with the dates. 76.4 million is through March 2012, while the 82.5M figure from Shawn Layden is through September 26, 2014. So over 2 and a half years they shipped another ~6.1 million PSPs.

I tweeted Shawn Layden asking for clarification for the final PS2 sales number. Odds that he responds are low, but you never know.

Well, now that Switch is approaching that figure, there's more incentive to shed light on final PS2 figures. Of course you are correct that the odds are still low, but then again, Layden revealed exact PSP numbers after he had already left Sony.

Well 160 for the PS2 it is then. It's from the mouth of the CEO, so it does not get more official than that. Happy that got clarified.

The only weird thing is why a publicly traded company as Sony didn't update their own statistics to keep them accurate a long time ago.

That is why I tweeted Layden, which is how we got the exact number of PSPs sold. I am hoping he has a PS2 with the exact figure produced like with the PSP and is willing to share an image of it. Or at least can corroborate that the PS2 sold 160M lifetime. A lot of people aren't trusting what Jim Ryan said.

It can get more official than that: When it is in a financial report, because there can be legal consequences for misreporting in a publicly traded company. On the other hand, Jim Ryan won't face any legal consequences if it turns out that he rounded the number to 160m, because the occasion on which he said it was not a financial presentation.

If you had been around a decade ago, you'd know the reason why Sony did what they did. The Vita was a big failure in the making, so after the fiscal year ending March 2012 they combined their home consoles (PS2+PS3) as well as their handhelds (PSP+Vita) to cover up. Not too long afterwards, Microsoft stopped giving shipments numbers for their Xbox consoles, because the Xbox One underperformed in a big way.

I remember that all too well. Only Nintendo kept reporting numbers for each platform of theirs no matter how low they got.

Given that history I'm not expecting any updates on PSVR2 anytime soon then, if ever.
