What exists today and the research that is done today is the precedent and determines the range of possibilities for what exists 20-30 years from now.

We're not even accounting for AI itself designing chips and technology and even other AI, which will probably happen at some point if you keep pouring billions/trillions of dollars into its development and have all these mega corporations hyper incentivized to create something better and better.

Who is "we"? I can guarantee you that people actually doing AI research do think about these topics all of the time.

The logical conclusion of your argument here is that all technological and scientific advancements have the potential to lead us to our destruction if we expand the timeline far enough and therefore we should stop making any of them.

Afterall, when 19th century physicists were studying the ultraviolet catastrophe they couldn't have predicted that the physics that resolved it (Quantum Mechanics and Nuclear Physics) would eventually lead to the invention of nuclear bombs.

It is nonsensical to anybody who isn't an anarcho-primitivist. You become concerned about x-risks when there is sufficient evidence that they exist, not because at some indeterminate future they might exist but you can't explain why the current technology leads there.

"We" as in we who are having this discussion on the forum?

There is billions, likely soon to be trillions poured into an AI arms race with corporations in the hunt for who will create the most advanced version that can do the most things.

Nvidia's market cap is through the roof not because they're making gaming GPUs for nerds, it's because of all the AI orders they are getting.

I hope I am wrong on this, but I don't think am I and I am hardly the only person raising red flags about this.

Even if it never becomes sentient or smart enough to have the thought of "hey, these humans aren't so great and fairly easy to kill lets just do XYZ" ... even if it never comes to that, there is a extremely high probability that AI will begin to automate most jobs and that only will be a monstrous, global changing catastrophe.

Weren't you just bragging about your investment in nvidia?  So in summary you don't like AI but bought nvidia stock and can't wait for the switch 2 and it's AI tools....  Jesus, you can't make this stuff up.

I bought the stock years ago, granted I inherited a massive stock portfolio so almost any kind of Nasdaq centric index fund will have Nvidia in it anyway.

But I won't support corporations that wholesale lay off their workforce to replace it with AI. I have a choice and can take my business elsewhere in that case.

So to be clear you won't support AI.  Nvidia makes their money from AI.  You have directly funded nvidia with stock investments and plan on further funding nvidia with a switch 2 purchase.  Got it.  Thanks.

I stand to make a lot of money from AI because of stock investments I inherited or basically guessed on. I bought Nvidia stock about 5 years ago IIRC on the basis the GPU business seemed to be going good thanks to Cryto miners and the Nintendo Switch was selling well. Nothing more than that, nothing less.

Even 5 years ago, the idea of AI being able to create photo realistic images just from text prompts was a bit of a leap, the idea of it doing video pretty much something to be laughed at.

I have a shit ton of Microsoft stock too, basically inherited that from 10+ years ago.

If anything I should be tap dancing up and down this forum selling everyone on how glorious AI will be, because I stand to make money from it. The fact that I'm not and have deep concerns about this technology should probably tell you something. I have every reason in the world to be biased *for* AI.

I got it the first time.  You actively fund and profit from AI while high horse preach against it.  Makes sense.  All clear here my friend.

Doesn't make my points any less valid. I profit from stocks, yes, because a big house, multiple cars, multiple yearly vacations for my family don't pay for themselves and I don't apologize for that, anymore than anyone else on this board should apologize for how they make a living and put food on their table.

I have more incentive than probably anyone on this board to crow about how great this technology is. The higher these stocks go the better car I can buy next time, the more first class flights I can take, etc. etc. etc.

The fact that I'm concerned about this technology when I have a lot to gain from it should concern people who have jack shit nothing of a financial stake in it. I should be head over heels talking about how great this stuff is.

I got it.  AI is bad, except for your ROI.  It is like trump preaching family values while sleeping with pornstars.

I didn't invest in any stocks specifically for AI. I own stock in thousands of companies, much of it inherited, I don't vet every company individually, virtually no investor does that, when you buy even a standard index fund, you buy just that ... an index of hundreds of stocks.

Your second point there doesn't make sense. Are "family values" somehow not valuable just because Trump said it and slept with pornstars? That doesn't mean there isn't value or truth in having basic family values because a disliked politician said it.

You're fixated on the wrong things.

I'm insulated better probably than most on this board too, I'm well off, I'm in an industry where I'm self employed and don't have to worry about being laid off. No one is going to call me into an office and say I'm fired. I haven't had to work a day in my life for the last 15 years really. The fact that I am still concerned about where this is headed probably should be a warning to people who aren't in that position. If I'm worried, I'll still be a lot better off than a lot of people if this shit goes sideways.
