Forums - Sales Discussion - European January Sales - PS5 Up, XBS Slightly Down, Switch Sharp Decline

Information from: European video game sales dip by over 7% in January | European Monthly Charts | GamesIndustry.biz

This months report isn't giving any YoY %'s or even telling us the order. PS5 is obviously going to be 1st, the question is if the "sharp decline" of the Switch was enough to put it below Xbox but considering how dire Xbox sales are in mainland Europe I would say Switch is most likely second still.

Hardware

- Nearly 475,000 units sold 1.4% less than last year.
- Strong sales of PS5 offset by declines of other consoles. Only console not to decline YoY
- Sharp decline in Nintendo Switch sales YoY
- A slight dip in Xbox Series S and X sales YoY

(Console hardware sales cover Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.)

Software

- 12.14m games sold, 7.3% less than last year.
- EA Sports FC 24 was comfortably the No.1 game. Almost Identical to Fifa 23 sales last year
- Tekken 8 debuts 7th, 80% higher sales than SF6 debut week.

Very disappointing to not get any percentages for console hardware this month.

More reason why MS is at least putting some games on other platforms.

GSD just doesn't track those markets. They do their UK report and then the Europe report which doesn't include the UK, Germany and some other countries.

PS5 up year over year? Damn that's impressive considering the fact that Jan 2023 was when PS5 really took off.

Also great to see Last of us part 2 remastered charting higher than the Tekken 8, Dragon 8 and prince of Persia in both UK and Europe.

good sales for the ps5, xbox sales are terrible and the switch is already showing its age. I wish they would reveal the numbers for each console

The Steam Sale did wonders for Hellblade and NFS.

Did they "get a call" not to publish YoY percentages?

In expecting at least a 30% decline for the switch.

April-June months will be something to look at with higher declines.

Take 2 IR (investor relations), has come out saying "over 77m" gen 9 consoles sold through as of December 31,2023.
(this means of those 77m+, you gotta split them between the PS5 and the Xbox Series)

Around that time, we got numbers from PS5, being past 50m.
That was around december 9th.

Its resonable to assume, that by the end of the year PS5 probably sold through like ~53-54m units.

That means you can work out how much the xbox series is at, by that time, by subtracting 53-54m from 77m.

You end up around ~23-24m Xbox series consoles by december 31,2023.

This only holds water if you think Take 2, are being honest to people that buy stock / shareholders and invest in them ect.

Long story short :
PS5 ~53-54m+    XS ~23-24m+   By  december 31, 2023.

PS5 might actually be a tiny bit undertracked, while Xbox could be a few million overtracked here.
Going by the numbers VGChartz has for feb 4th.

Depending on how well the consoles did in january (like I assume PS5 sales didnt just drop off a cliff, and go to 0),
and that Xbox didn't do millions in january alone.
