Euro-Med: Israel’s attacks on academics in line with Gaza ‘genocide’

The Geneva-based Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor says the Israeli military has killed three university presidents and 95 university deans and professors since the start of its war on Gaza.

“The deliberate and pervasive targeting of educational institutions is an additional manifestation of the ongoing crime of genocide Israel has been committing since October 7, 2023,” the rights group said in a post on X.

Israeli jets ‘carpet bombing’ area near Nasser Hospital: Witness

A young Palestinian man who fled from Khan Younis in southern Gaza has told Al Jazeera that Israeli tanks have laid siege to the city’s Nasser Hospital.

“Since 2:30 at night, we have been carpet bombed by Israeli warplanes. The entire area near Nasser Hospital was shaking as if it were an earthquake. We took shelter in our building’s stairwell until the morning. We assumed the Israeli soldiers would lay siege to the area, so we ran for our lives. Some took shelter in the hospital and others remain stranded,” he said in a video testimony.

“Israeli snipers are shooting at all those moving on the road. Many dead bodies are lying on the street. Both Nasser and the Jordanian Hospitals are besieged by Israeli tanks.”

Nasser, al-Amal hospitals ‘under complete Israeli siege’ for 24 hours

Gaza has been turned into a graveyard, with hospitals and houses being attacked and destroyed.

The Nasser and al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis have been under complete Israeli siege for the past 24 hours. Israeli forces at the al-Amal Hospital have been forcing patients to flee from the hospital under really critical conditions, while there are still patients inside unable to leave as the bombardment and confrontations between Hamas fighters and Israeli soldiers continue.

What we can see on the ground is a systematic creation of a corrosive environment in which Israel, with its destruction of neighbourhoods and hospitals, is making Gaza unliveable for the majority of Palestinians.

Israeli forces shoot Palestinian child in occupied West Bank

A 14-year-old Palestinian boy has been shot by Israeli forces in the town of Beit Furik, east of Nablus in the occupied West Bank, the Wafa news agency reports. The child was injured in his foot when Israeli forces fired live bullets and tear gas at people taking part in a march in the town denouncing Israel’s military campaigns in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.

Israeli forces also shot a 16-year-old during their storming of the town of Qaffin, north of Tulkarem, according to Wafa.

The Israeli military has carried out raids in other locations across the occupied West Bank tonight. They include:

  • The town of Silat Al-Dhahr and the villages of Arbouna, Deir Ghazala, Arana, Al-Jalama, Faqoua, Jalboun, and Al-Fandakumiya in Jenin Governorate
  • The Arroub camp in Hebron
  • The village of Beit Wazan, west of the city of Nablus

Wafa has also reported that Israeli forces have stormed the prayer hall at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem, while Israeli settlers danced and sang near Bab al-Silsilah, one of Al-Aqsa’s main doors, to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Purim.

Interesting thing that someone I knew mention is that people will be voting against Biden because of his stance on the Isreli-Palestinian conflict.

UN Security Council vote (again) today

The UN Security Council is scheduled to vote at 14:00 GMT on a draft resolution put forward by the body’s 10 elected members that will reportedly demand an “immediate” truce in Gaza.

Here is what to know about the resolution:

  • The vote is due to take place after permanent members Russia and China on Friday vetoed a US draft resolution for not urging an unconditional, immediate ceasefire.
  • According to diplomats talking to the AFP news agency, the new text to be voted on has been worked on with the US to avoid a veto.
  • It “demands an immediate ceasefire” for the ongoing Muslim holy month of Ramadan, “leading to a permanent sustainable ceasefire”.
  • Several Gaza resolutions have been vetoed at the council in previous months due to disagreements between the five permanent members.
  • Israel’s biggest ally, the US, has vetoed four ceasefire draft resolutions.

Atmosphere of optimism ahead of UNSC vote

The resolution coming from the non-permanent members of the Security Council is clear and shorter compared to the US draft resolution that was vetoed by Russia and China last week.

What is also interesting is that all of the elected members are sponsoring it. When it first emerged at the end of last week, two of these members – close US allies Japan and South Korea – did not have their name to it. They have now put their name to it. They are, I think, smelling that this could be the resolution that has success.

Also, the US didn’t want to negotiate on this resolution when it had its own resolution in play. Over the weekend, I am told, the US has started negotiating and managed to change bits of this resolution and added things to it – suggesting that if the US is negotiating, the US may well be favourable to this resolution.

The word I am getting from Al Jazeera’s teams in the UN right now and people I’m speaking to is there is an atmosphere of optimism. They feel it is quite likely that for the first time the Security Council might speak with one voice.

Last-minute negotiations at UNSC

Diplomatic sources have told Al Jazeera that due to last-minute negotiations the convening of the UN Security Council will be delayed for at least 20 minutes.

“It just gives you an idea of how there are these potential changes and negotiations taking place behind closed door at this very moment,” Al Jazeera’s Gabriel Elisondo, reporting from the UN headquarters, said.

Sources said that the US has asked for the text to not include a reference to a “permanent” ceasefire but a “lasting” one.

US still trying to slip in continuing the war, no doubt under pressure from Israel. But it does seem US finally wants to support this much more direct resolution.

Is that a threat? Israel send a delegation to ask for more bombs, cancel it all you want!

Netanyahu threatens to nix DC delegation if US doesn’t veto resolution

Israeli media is reporting that the prime minister said if the US doesn’t veto the UN Security Council resolution for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, he will be canceling White House meetings by a visiting delegation that includes Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi.

Ambassador to Mozambique introduces draft resolution

Mozambique’s ambassador to the UN, Pedro Comissario Afonso, introduces the draft resolution demanding a ceasefire.

“We express our deep appreciation for all members of this council for their efforts and inputs on this draft resolution and at ending the catastrophic situation in the Gaza Strip,” he said.

“The situation in Gaza is a matter of grave concern to the entire international community; indeed, the escalation of the conflict in the Gaza Strip and its catastrophic consequences are a clear threat to international peace and security”.

“In this context, the E10 (elected 10 countries to the UNSC) felt compelled to table this draft resolution before you”.

Return word ‘permanent’ to resolution: Russia’s ambassador to the UN

Vasily Nebenzya says that the word cannot be replaced; otherwise Israel will go back to resuming its onslaught in Gaza.

Finally!!!!!

Draft resolution passed

Fourteen countries backed the draft resolution put forward by the non-permanent members of the country.

The US abstained.

What the draft UN Security Council resolution says

The resolution was submitted by Algeria, Ecuador, Guyana, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia and Switzerland.

The first point of the resolution “demands an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a permanent sustainable ceasefire, and also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as ensuring humanitarian access to address their medical and other humanitarian needs, and further demands that the parties comply with their obligations under international law in relation to all persons they detain”.

It further “emphasizes the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance to and reinforce the protection of civilians in the entire Gaza Strip and reiterates its demand for the lifting of all barriers to the provision of humanitarian assistance at scale, in line with international humanitarian law as well as resolutions”.

Ambassador to Algeria welcomes the resolution

Algeria’s representative at the UNSC welcomes the resolution’s passing, saying the Security Council is “finally shouldering its responsibility as the primary organ responsible for maintaining international peace and security.”

“I would like to thank all the council members for their flexibility and the constructive way that allowed us today to adopt this long-awaited resolution. [A] resolution that calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip in order to put an end to the massacres that unfortunately are still ongoing over the five months,” Amar Bendjama said.

“This bloodbath has continued for far too long”.

It only took the UNSC 5 months to pass a resolution, now how long until the bombs stop dropping. Can Israel ignore this, and for how long. As I imagine supplying more bombs to Israel will be against the UNSC now.

This resolution must be implemented: Guterres

The UN chief says that the Security Council just approved a long-awaited resolution on Gaza, demanding an immediate ceasefire, and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.

“This resolution must be implemented. Failure would be unforgivable,” he says in a post on X.

US blames Hamas for delay in deal

The US representative to the UN says Hamas should “accept the deal on the table”. A ceasefire could have come about months ago if Hamas had released the captives, Linda Thomas-Greenfield said.

“We did not agree with everything with the resolution,” which she says is the reason why the US abstained. Thomas-Greenfield stressed that the release of captives will lead to the increase in humanitarian aid in the besieged coastal enclave.

Sure blame it on Hamas, not on your 3 times veto and delay tactics with a long delayed resolution that only calls for negotiations and pauses.
The US is fully responsible for the collective punishment and man made famine. Hamas had many prisoner exchange deals on the table all throughout.

Israel told to immediately respond to passing of resolution

Louis Charbonneau, UN director at Human Rights Watch, says Israel “needs to immediately respond” to the adoption of the UN Security Council resolution “by facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid, ending its starvation of Gaza’s population, and halting unlawful attacks”

Charbonneau added in a statement: “Palestinian armed groups should immediately release all civilians held hostage. The US and other countries should use their leverage to end atrocities by suspending arms transfers to Israel.”

CNN is slow, this is all they have

UN Security Council passes resolution calling for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

The UN Security Council has approved a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire between Gaza and Israel after the United States abstained.

This is a breaking news story. More details to follow.

Probably looking for ways to spin it and soften the language to excuse Israel.

Back to the daily war crimes and atrocities

Footage emerges of Israeli soldiers assaulting Palestinian boy

A video authenticated by Al Jazeera’s Sanad verification unit shows Israeli soldiers assaulting a Palestinian boy in the city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank.

The security camera footage, filmed two weeks ago, shows an Israeli soldier approaching the young boy in a shop, forcing him to remove his shirt and slapping him in the face in the city’s Jaber neighbourhood.

The Israeli soldiers then speak to the shop owner and tear up the boy’s shirt, before leaving.

Israeli military behaves like the mafia, although that would be insulting to mobsters.

Dozens of Palestinians killed by Israeli air attacks in Gaza: Report

The Wafa news agency reports that dozens of Palestinians have been killed in a series of Israeli air attacks on Gaza over the past 24 hours. They include:

  • At least 18 Palestinians killed in the bombing of a home on al-Beeah Street in Deir el-Balah in central Gaza.
  • More than 27 Palestinians, including women and children, killed by Israeli bombs targeting five homes in Rafah in southern Gaza.

In addition, Wafa reports that Israeli air attacks in the immediate vicinity of al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City have killed an unspecified number of people, while Israeli forces continue to demand via loudspeakers that Palestinians immediately evacuate the medical complex in northern Gaza.

Tanks crushed bodies, ambulances at al-Shifa Hospital: Report

Palestinians who fled the ongoing Israeli siege of al-Shifa Hospital have described what happened as Israeli tanks and armoured bulldozers surrounded the hospital.

Jameel al-Ayoubi, who was one of thousands of Palestinians sheltering at the hospital, saw Israeli tanks and armoured bulldozers drive over at least four bodies in the hospital courtyard, The Associated Press news agency reports. Ambulances were also crushed, he says.

Kareem Ayman Hathat, who lived in a five-storey building about 100 metres (328 feet) from the hospital, told AP he hid in his kitchen for days waiting as explosions shook the building.

“From time to time, the tank would fire a shell,” he said. “It was to terrorise us.”

Witnesses shared with Al Jazeera terrifying scenes at the besieged hospital, including Israeli soldiers executing a group of eight people.

Doctor says conditions inside European Gaza Hospital ‘unimaginable’

Konstantina Ilia Karydi, an anaesthetist at the European Gaza Hospital near Khan Younis, has described the situation inside the medical facility in southern Gaza as “unimaginable”. “This hospital had an original capacity of just 200 beds. Now, it has expanded to 1,000 beds,” she said.

“There are around 22,000 displaced people sheltering in the corridors and in tents inside the hospital because people feel that it’s safer to be here than anywhere else.”

Karydi is a member of an Emergency Medical Team (EMT) working with Medical Aid for Palestinians, the International Rescue Committee and the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. In a press release, the groups said their staff have witnessed “horrific scenes” at the hospital – one of Gaza’s last functioning medical facilities – with patients “dying from infections with evidence of serious malnutrition”.

Medical staff ‘managing with the bare minimum’ at Gaza hospital

Husam Basheer, an orthopaedic surgeon working at the European Gaza Hospital near Khan Younis, says he and his staff are “managing with the bare minimum of resources” at the medical facility due to Israeli restrictions on medical aid entering the besieged enclave.

“One day we wanted to do a plate and screw, which is a standard procedure for bone fixation, but we didn’t have the right equipment. Sometimes we’ve also lacked gauze which is a basic supply for surgery. We worked around the challenges we faced and managed in a different way, but the staff here are overwhelmed,” he said.

The aftermath of Israeli strikes in Rafah

At least 30 people killed in Rafah in last 24 hours

Palestinian medics say at least 30 people have been killed in Rafah by Israeli forces in the last 24 hours.

“Every bombing that takes place in Rafah, we fear the tanks will come in. The past 24 hours were one of the worst days since we moved into Rafah,” said Abu Khaled, a father of seven.

“In Rafah, we live in fear, we are hungry, we are homeless and our future is unknown. With no ceasefire in sight, we might end up dead or displaced somewhere else, maybe north and maybe south [to Egypt],” he was quoted as saying by the Reuters news agency.

Red Crescent says medical staff forced out of al-Amal Hospital

The Palestine Red Crescent Society says the Israeli military forced the staff and patients at al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis to evacuate the building last night.

“While attempting to leave through the military checkpoint, the teams encountered difficulty moving due to extensive excavation and infrastructure destruction,” PRCS said on X.

“During the attempt to clear the rubble and obstacles on the road, the occupation forces opened fire towards two of the teams trying to remove the rubble, directly injuring them.”

The PRCS added that Israeli troops “forced the teams to return to” the hospital later. However, “they found the hospital gate closed, making it impossible for the teams to re-enter,” it added. “The teams remained waiting on the street until now,” the NGO said.

The Israeli military announced yesterday a new offensive in the al-Amal neighbourhood.

Gaza death toll increases to 32,333

The number of people killed in Israel’s war on Gaza has increased to 32,333, according to the Health Ministry in the enclave. At least 74,694 people have also been wounded by Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 7.

The latest figures include 107 people killed and 176 wounded over the past 24 hours.

Fallout from the Ceasefire resolution

UNSC speaking with one voice, almost

After almost six months, the Security Council has spoken, it seems, almost with one voice. Yes, the US abstained, but that doesn’t affect the vote.

The vote was almost unanimous: 14 votes in favour of a resolution demanding a lasting and immediate ceasefire in Gaza. That is very, very significant because the US has used its veto on four different occasions — three times on a resolution and once on an amendment to the resolution.

This time, the US let this pass. They negotiated it, they tried to change it a bit, and they were not happy with the fact that it did not condemn Hamas. Two diplomatic sources said that in the run-up to the vote, the US was proposing its own amendment to put in a line condemning Hamas, but they decided not to.

UNSC silence on Gaza was becoming deafening: France

The French ambassador to the UN says the adoption of the resolution shows that the body can “still act when all of its members make the necessary effort to discharge their mandate”.

“The Security Council’s silence on Gaza was becoming deafening. It is high time now for the council to finally contribute to finding a solution,” Nicolas de Riviere said at the session.

“This crisis is not over, alas, and our council will have to remain mobilised and immediately get back to work. It will have to, following Ramadan, which finishes in two weeks, it will have to establish a permanent ceasefire.

“It will need to strive to see the recovery and stabilisation of Gaza finally, and above all, the Security Council will have to get a political process back on track, a political process aiming to bring about the two-state solution – the only solution able to guarantee peace.”

US ‘finally’ stops blocking the UNSC, China says

The Chinese ambassador to the UN says Beijing’s stance on calling for a ceasefire has been clear from the beginning of the war on Gaza.

“After repeated vetoes of the council’s actions, the United States finally decided to stop obstructing the council’s demands for an immediate ceasefire. Despite all this, the US still tried to find all kinds of excuses and made accusations against China,” Zhang Jun said.

“Mr president, nearly six months after the outbreak of the Gaza conflict, over 32,000 innocent civilians have lost their lives. For the lives that have already perished, the council resolution today comes too late, but for the millions of people in Gaza who remain mired in an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, this resolution, if fully and effectively implemented, could still bring long-awaited hope,” he added.

“Security Council resolutions are binding.”

Slovenia says UNSC resolution sends ‘strongest signal thus far’

Slovenia, one of the 10 countries that proposed the UN Security Council resolution, welcomes its passage and says this support shows the leadership of these 10 countries for peace.

“UNSC delivered the strongest signal thus far: We demand an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan leading to a lasting ceasefire. It is a call we have all been desperate to hear from the council,” said Samuel Zbogar, Slovenia’s ambassador.

Malta says UN resolution must be ‘fully implemented’

Malta is contributing to calls for full implementation of the UN Security Council resolution that legally binds Israel to an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip for roughly the next two weeks.

The central Mediterranean country, which was one of the 10 countries to propose the resolution, also welcomed its passage.

British ambassador says UK ‘regrets’ absence of October 7 condemnation

Barbara Woodward, the UK’s ambassador to the UN, expressed “regret” that the resolution did not condemn the October 7 Hamas attacks, adding that the UK “condemns” the attacks “unequivocally”.

“The intense suffering of innocent Palestinian civilians in Gaza shows no sign of abating, and a humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding before our eyes,” she said. “The resolution sends a clear and united message on the need for international humanitarian law to be upheld and for aid to be scaled up urgently, including the lifting of all barriers impeding its delivery.

“We call for this resolution to be implemented immediately. Mr. president, we need to focus on how we chart the way from an immediate humanitarian pause to a lasting, sustainable peace without a return to fighting.

“That means the formation of a new Palestinian government for the West Bank and Gaza accompanied by an international support package.”

Netanyahu cancels US trip for Israeli delegation

US and Israeli media are reporting that Netanyahu has halted the delegation’s planned visit to the US after the country abstained during a vote on a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

The delegation, which was to travel to the US at the invitation of President Joe Biden’s White House, was meant to meet with US officials on Israel’s planned offensive on Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost city and the last major urban centre untouched by an Israeli ground assault.

The US has said it would not support Israel’s planned invasion without a clear plan to protect the nearly 1.5 million civilians sheltering in Rafah although senior members of the Biden administration have hardened their position in recent days, saying any offensive would be a disaster.

Israel’s Ben-Gvir: ‘UN is a wasteland’

Itamar Ben-Gvir, the far-right national security minister of Israel, says “the United Nations is a wasteland” in reaction to the UN Security Council vote.

Along with calling for a ceasefire and more humanitarian aid to Gaza, the resolution obligates the parties to the war to “comply with their obligations under international law in relation to all people they detain”.

Israel’s UN envoy slams resolution as ‘shameful’

Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, says the resolution failed to demand a ceasefire without “conditioning” it on the release of captives in Gaza, saying it “undermines the efforts to secure their release”.

“It is harmful to these efforts because it gives Hamas terrorists hope to get a ceasefire without releasing the hostages. All members of the council … should have voted against this shameless resolution,” he said.

“The resolution says that taking civilians is in violation of international law. Yet on the other hand, despite the fact that you know Hamas won’t listen to your calls and release the hostages, you demand a ceasefire. Take a moment and think about this moral contradiction,” Erdan said.

‘We will operate against Hamas everywhere’: Gallant

Israel’s defence minister says ahead of meetings in the White House that Israel will not stop its war on Gaza.

Yoav Gallant, according to a statement from his office, said he would stress in his meeting with US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan: “We will operate against Hamas everywhere – including in places where we have not yet been.”

“We will identify an alternative to Hamas, so that the IDF [Israeli army] may complete its mission,” he said. We have no moral right to stop the war while there are still hostages held in Gaza.”

Smotrich calls on Israel to ignore US reprimand in Security Council

Israel’s far-right finance minister is being quoted by local broadcaster Channel 7 as saying that “the US decision not to impose a veto in the Security Council plays into Hamas’s hands”, and will ultimately make the return of Israeli captives held in Gaza more difficult.

Earlier, the US abstained during a vote in the UN Security Council on a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza until the end of Ramadan and the release of all captives. The US vetoed three prior attempts to achieve similar resolutions since the war on Gaza began on October 7.

“Our relationship with the US has always been one of partners, but not of a patron state. This is not the first time that an Israeli government has been required to make decisions contrary to the US government’s position” Bezalel Smotrich said, adding that Israel will “not stop” its war on Gaza until Hamas is destroyed and all of its captives held there are returned.

No shift in Gaza policy despite UNSC resolution abstention: US

The White House says Washington’s abstention from a UN vote demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza “does not represent a shift in our policy, … but because the final text does not have the language that we think is essential, like a condemnation of Hamas, we could not support it”.

White House spokesperson John Kirby said US officials are “very disappointed about Netanyahu’s decision not to send his advisers for talks at the White House about the Rafah operation”.

US disappointed at Netanyahu’s decision to cancel Israeli delegation’s US trip

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller tells reporters during a briefing in Washington that it is “surprising and unfortunate” that an Israeli delegation is no longer coming to scheduled talks this week after the US abstained from a UN vote demanding an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Miller added that a ground offensive in Rafah, the last refuge for about half of Gaza’s 2.3 million population after the arrival of many people displaced by fighting elsewhere, would be a mistake and would weaken Israel’s security.

Russia says important to ‘vote in favour of peace’

Russia’s ambassador to the UN, Vasily Alekseyevich Nebenzya, says his country hopes the Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza will be used in the “interests of peace” rather than advancing the “inhumane Israeli operation against Palestinians”.

So why do you veto resolutions on a ceasefire in Ukraine, hypocrites.

Hamas insists on permanent ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza

Hamas welcomes the UN Security Council resolution but also emphasises its own positions on a ceasefire and the release of captives.

The group said in a statement posted on its Telegram channel:

  • It stresses the necessity of reaching a permanent ceasefire that leads to the withdrawal of all Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip and the return of the displaced to their homes.
  • It affirms its readiness to engage in an immediate prisoner exchange process that leads to the release of prisoners on both sides.
  • In the context of the text of the resolution, it stresses the importance of the freedom of movement of Palestinians and access to humanitarian aid in all areas of the Gaza Strip.
  • It calls on the UNSC to pressure Israel to adhere to the ceasefire and stop its war.
  • It affirms the right of Palestinian people to establish an independent, sovereign state with Jerusalem as its capital and the right of return and self-determination in accordance with international resolutions and international law.

Problem with truce negotiations is not related to captives: Hamas leader

Hussam Badran, member of the group’s political bureau, says the issue with talks on securing a ceasefire is related, rather, to Israel’s refusal to provide guarantees on basic issues related to the lives of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Badran said these issues include stopping the onslaught, allowing aid into the besieged coastal enclave, the return of the displaced and a clear reconstruction plan.  “The problem is not limited to the release of captives as Israel claims,” he said.

He also said Netanyahu does not want to reach a ceasefire and is “deceiving his people and the families of the prisoners to cover up his political and security failures”.

Euro-Med Monitor: Two months on, Israel keeps violating ICJ rulings on Gaza

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) made interim rulings two months ago that ordered Israel to take six measures to stop genocidal acts in the Gaza Strip. The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor says Israel continues to violate them.

The Geneva-based group said in a report that “the majority of the provisional measures outlined in the ruling were violated, and the crime of genocide was carried out on the same scale” by Israel.

“Various forms and acts of genocide were committed with the intent of destroying the Palestinian people,” it added.

“Targeting civilian gatherings around humanitarian aid trucks with direct gunshots, quadcopters, and Israeli tank shells is one of the most well-documented examples of the unlawful killings and executions carried out by the Israeli army against Palestinian civilians over the past few weeks.”

PM Netanyahu steering Israel toward int’l isolation: Peace Now

The Israeli pro-peace settlement watchdog group says “only a political solution will bring security”.

In a post on X, Peace Now says: “We face a crucial decision – it’s a choice between security, aligning with the US and the international community, or siding with [Israeli ministers] Ben Gvir and Smotrich’s messianic dreams. Choose.”

Amnesty: Overdue resolution must be ‘implemented immediately’

The head of Amnesty International says the UN Security Council resolution is long overdue and must be “implemented immediately” on its way to resulting in an enduring ceasefire.

“Israel must immediately halt their brutal bombing of Gaza and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. Israel, Hamas and other armed groups must ensure the ceasefire is durable. Civilian hostages must be immediately released. As should all Palestinians arbitrarily detained,” Agnes Callamard wrote on X.

“In recent weeks voting at the UN Security Council has descended into a farcical political game with tragic consequences for civilians,” she said, calling on the international community to prioritise saving lives instead of politics.

UN rapporteur releases damning report on Israel’s ‘genocide’ in Gaza

The UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, writes in her report to the UN Security Council – which was released at the same time as the Gaza resolution vote – that “Israel’s genocide on the Palestinians in Gaza is an escalatory stage of a long-standing settler colonial process of erasure”.

“For over seven decades this process has suffocated the Palestinian people as a group – demographically, culturally, economically and politically – seeking to displace it and expropriate and control its land and resources. The ongoing Nakba must be stopped and remedied once and for all.”

The UN report finds that “there are reasonable grounds to believe” that the threshold for several genocidal acts against Palestinians is met: killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm and deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about physical destruction.

“Israel has de facto treated an entire protected group and its life-sustaining infrastructure as ‘terrorist’ or ‘terrorist-supporting’, thus transforming everything and everyone into either a target or collateral damage, hence killable or destroyable,” says the report.

The special rapporteur’s report comes out as the UN Security Council has passed a legally binding resolution that demands an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan

UN rapporteur calls for arms embargo on Israel, reparations

The report by UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories Francesca Albanese also makes recommendations to UN member states.

It says member states should “immediately implement an arms embargo on Israel” as well as “other economic and political measures necessary to ensure an immediate and lasting ceasefire”, which may include sanctions.

Albanese also recommends that South Africa take Israel’s case to the UN Security Council as Israel has been ignoring interim rulings by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on genocidal acts in Gaza.

The rapporteur called for independent and transparent investigations into violations of international law “by all actors”, and measures to ensure that “Israel, as well as states who have been complicit in the Gaza genocide” will acknowledge harm, commit to non-repetition and make reparations, including full cost of reconstructing Gaza.

“In the short term and as a temporary measure, in consultation with the State of Palestine, deploy an international protective presence to constrain the violence routinely used against Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territory,” recommends the report.

US says Israel has made assurances on use of weapons

The US Department of State says Israel and six other countries that receive US military aid – Colombia, Iraq, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia and Ukraine – had submitted written assurances by a Sunday deadline that they are complying with human rights laws.

“In each case, these assurances were made by a credible high-level official in the partner government who has the ability and authority to make decisions and commitments about the issues at the heart of the assurances,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.

We have not found them to be in violation of international humanitarian law, either when it comes to the conduct of the war or when it comes to the provision of humanitarian assistance,” Miller said.

Ahead of the deadline, 17 senators had pressed the administration of US President Joe Biden not to immediately describe Israel’s assurances as credible.

UN predictions of an imminent famine in Gaza “make it abundantly clear that [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s government is not doing nearly enough to allow aid to reach starving and otherwise desperate people in Gaza”, said a letter signed by lawmakers including Chris Van Hollen, Tim Kaine and Bernie Sanders.

Miller please turn yourself in at the ICC. Any more evidence needed US is covering for Israel? They assured us they're not in violation of international law, ok that's fine then. Carry on.

South Africa urges UNSC to ensure ‘compliance’ with resolution

South Africa says it welcomes the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all captives held by Palestinian groups.

“It is now the responsibility of the United Nations Security Council to ensure that there is compliance with the resolution, which is binding on the parties,” South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation said in a statement.

White House sees UNSC rift with Israel as manufactured crisis: Report

Washington believes the public display of dissatisfaction with the US by Israel over the UNSC resolution is a manufactured crisis by Netanyahu for domestic purposes, US outlet Axios cites unnamed US officials as saying.

On Sunday evening and Monday morning, White House officials told Netanyahu’s aides in discussions about the UN resolution that the US would likely abstain from voting, a source with direct knowledge was quoted as saying.

But they reportedly told the Israelis that Biden is not changing course on Israel and views the resolution as non-binding – something the US State Department said publicly after the vote as well.

The report says the White House is now “perplexed” by Netanyahu’s cancelling of an Israeli delegation’s trip to Washington, DC, with one official saying this is “self-defeating” behaviour.

Biden thinks he's above international law as well, no surprise there.

Netanyahu ‘not so upset to turn down $3.3bn’ in US money: Sanders

US Senator Bernie Sanders points out that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is apparently upset after the UN Security Council vote, having cancelled a delegation to Washington and blasting the resolution.

“But he’s not so upset that he’ll turn down $3.3bn in taxpayer dollars to fund his immoral war,” the Democratic senator said in a post on X, adding that the US should cease sending Israel money “to starve Palestinian children”.

Sanders also said Washington must push all parties to honour the resolution, which calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all captives, and significantly increase humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Israel’s refusal to send delegation to US creates division in government

This was a delegation that was supposed to head to Washington at the request of US President Joe Biden.

It was going to include the minister of strategic affairs in Israel, Ron Dermer, the National Security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi and representatives from the coordinators of government activities in the occupied Palestinian territories for the Israeli army.

They were supposed to go to Washington to brief American officials about how exactly Israel plans to invade Gaza’s southernmost city, Rafah.

We’ve seen a lot of back-and-forth public disagreements between both American and Israeli officials about this topic. The Americans have simply said it’d be a red line and a mistake. Netanyahu has previously said that, with or without US support, the invasion is going to happen.

Now there are some issues internally within Israel’s government. Benny Gantz, a member of the country’s war cabinet, said that it could be a mistake not to send this delegation at a time when US support is critical in this war.

As we have known all along, the USA can stop this war at any moment.

Two week ceasefire in Ramadan ‘not enough’: MSF

Avril Benoit, the US executive director of Doctors Without Borders, also known by its French name, Medecins Sans Frontieres, says while the UNSC resolution calling for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza during Ramadan was a “constructive step”, there was a need for “a sustainable ceasefire”.

“A two-week ceasefire is not nearly enough time to respond to the overwhelming humanitarian needs. We repeat our urgent demand for a sustained ceasefire now,” she said in a statement posted on the group’s website.

“In the meantime, Council members must ensure that the ceasefire is put into action immediately and doesn’t end up being merely words on paper.”

It remains to be see if there actually will be a ceasefire before the end of Ramadan...

Palestinians in Gaza cautiously optimistic on UN ceasefire resolution amid Israeli bombs

The resolution that has been passed today by the UN Security Council is a gate of hope for Palestinians here who have been under unrelenting bombardment for (more than) five months, with the UNSC not managing to pass a ceasefire resolution until now.

Palestinians believe that Israel might not fully commit to the UN Security Council resolution. But they believe that it will create the way later to increase international pressure on Israel to commit to the resolution.

However, there has been no letup in air raids in the past 24 hours. (Israel is) intensifying its bombardment from land, air and sea. Israeli forces are manoeuvring troops on the ground, adopting a strategy of blowing up residential neighbourhoods one after the other. Rafah has been bombarded in the past hour where a number of Palestinians have been reported injured after being hit with a drone missile in the western part of the city.

Jordan: Israeli reaction to UN resolution shows ‘disdain’ for international law

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi says the UN Security Council resolution on Gaza must be implemented so Israel won’t continue to violate international law with impunity.

He wrote in an X post that the “reaction by the Israeli government reflects the disdain with which it holds international law”.

Safadi had earlier today heavily criticised Israel in a joint press conference with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, also calling for sanctions on Israel and for all states to stop sending arms to it.
