What the draft UN Security Council resolution says

The resolution was submitted by Algeria, Ecuador, Guyana, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia and Switzerland.

The first point of the resolution “demands an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a permanent sustainable ceasefire, and also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as ensuring humanitarian access to address their medical and other humanitarian needs, and further demands that the parties comply with their obligations under international law in relation to all persons they detain”.

It further “emphasizes the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance to and reinforce the protection of civilians in the entire Gaza Strip and reiterates its demand for the lifting of all barriers to the provision of humanitarian assistance at scale, in line with international humanitarian law as well as resolutions”.

Ambassador to Algeria welcomes the resolution

Algeria’s representative at the UNSC welcomes the resolution’s passing, saying the Security Council is “finally shouldering its responsibility as the primary organ responsible for maintaining international peace and security.”

“I would like to thank all the council members for their flexibility and the constructive way that allowed us today to adopt this long-awaited resolution. [A] resolution that calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip in order to put an end to the massacres that unfortunately are still ongoing over the five months,” Amar Bendjama said.

“This bloodbath has continued for far too long”.

It only took the UNSC 5 months to pass a resolution, now how long until the bombs stop dropping. Can Israel ignore this, and for how long. As I imagine supplying more bombs to Israel will be against the UNSC now.

This resolution must be implemented: Guterres

The UN chief says that the Security Council just approved a long-awaited resolution on Gaza, demanding an immediate ceasefire, and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.

“This resolution must be implemented. Failure would be unforgivable,” he says in a post on X.

US blames Hamas for delay in deal

The US representative to the UN says Hamas should “accept the deal on the table”. A ceasefire could have come about months ago if Hamas had released the captives, Linda Thomas-Greenfield said.

“We did not agree with everything with the resolution,” which she says is the reason why the US abstained. Thomas-Greenfield stressed that the release of captives will lead to the increase in humanitarian aid in the besieged coastal enclave.

Sure blame it on Hamas, not on your 3 times veto and delay tactics with a long delayed resolution that only calls for negotiations and pauses.
The US is fully responsible for the collective punishment and man made famine. Hamas had many prisoner exchange deals on the table all throughout.

Israel told to immediately respond to passing of resolution

Louis Charbonneau, UN director at Human Rights Watch, says Israel “needs to immediately respond” to the adoption of the UN Security Council resolution “by facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid, ending its starvation of Gaza’s population, and halting unlawful attacks”

Charbonneau added in a statement: “Palestinian armed groups should immediately release all civilians held hostage. The US and other countries should use their leverage to end atrocities by suspending arms transfers to Israel.”

CNN is slow, this is all they have

UN Security Council passes resolution calling for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

The UN Security Council has approved a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire between Gaza and Israel after the United States abstained.

This is a breaking news story. More details to follow.

Probably looking for ways to spin it and soften the language to excuse Israel.
