Netanyahu tells Blinken Israel will go into Rafah alone if necessary

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel is determined to send troops into the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where about 1.5 million Palestinians are sheltering, and would do so without US backing, if necessary.

Netanyahu said in a statement he told visiting US Secretary of State Blinken there is no way to defeat Hamas without going into Rafah. “And I told him I hope we will do it with the support of the US. But if we have to – we will do it alone,” he said.

Blinken: ‘We’re determined that Israel succeed in defending itself’

The US secretary of state says in Tel Aviv he told Israeli leaders the plan to attack Rafah, where 1.5 million people are trapped, isn’t feasible.

“A major military ground operation is not the way to do it. It risks killing many more civilians, it risks wreaking greater havoc on the provision of humanitarian assistance, it risks further isolation of Israel around the world and jeopardizing its long-term security and standing,” Blinken told reporters at the airport.

“We’re looking forward to seeing Israeli officials in Washington next week to go through the details and the best way forward. We’re determined that Israel succeed in defending itself and becomes integrated into the region secure and safe.”

‘You’re going to be stuck in Gaza,’ Blinken tells Netanyahu

The top US diplomat told Benjamin Netanyahu and his war cabinet if they continue on their current path, Hamas will remain in control of Gaza and Israeli interests will be harmed, a news report says.

If Israel doesn’t take a different course, the future of Gaza could include perpetual occupation and resistance from Palestinian fighters, an unnamed source informed about the meeting was quoted by US news outlet Axios as saying.

“You need a coherent plan or either you’re going to be stuck in Gaza,” Blinken reportedly said, reiterating US opposition to a looming invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza. He warned Netanyahu “you might not realise it until it’s too late”, and said Israel’s security and its global standing is in peril.

Palestinian ministry slams Israel over new settlement plan

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Israel’s claim to 8,000 dunams (1,977 acres, 800 hectares) of land in the Jordan Valley is a “crime” that is part of an “official policy racing against time to annex the West Bank and eliminate the possibility of creating a Palestinian state”.

“There are no morals, values, principles or international resolutions that can stop the extremist right,” the ministry said in a statement.

It added that the plan by Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to develop hundreds of housing units near the Israeli settlement of Yafit was once again an indication that Israel “denies the existence of our people and incites their extermination and displacement”.

“Israel’s continued impunity provides the fascists with the necessary time to complete the slaughter and extermination of our people, the theft of their homeland and their displacement from it,” it said, adding that international complicity with Israel’s crimes was “the crime of the century.”

West Bank land seizure largest since Oslo accords: Watchdog

Earlier, the Israeli government announced it’s confiscating 800 hectares (1,980 acres) of land in the occupied West Bank. Israeli settlement watchdog Peace Now said the seizure is the single largest since the 1993 Oslo Accords, and “2024 marks a peak in the extent of declarations of state land”.

Peace Now called the timing of the announcement a “provocation” as it came during a visit by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who has been critical of settlement expansion by the hard-right government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Spain, Ireland, Malta, Slovenia agree to recognise Palestinian state

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says he expects his country’s recognition of Palestine to happen during the current four-year legislature that began last year. He told reporters an agreement was reached after meeting with his Irish, Maltese and Slovenian counterparts on the sidelines of a European Council gathering on Friday.

“We are agreed the only way to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region is through implementation of a two-state solution, with Israeli and Palestinian states living side-by-side, in peace and security,” said a statement by Ireland after the meeting.

Arab states and the European Union agreed at a meeting in Spain in November that an independent Palestinian state is the only answer to the Middle East conflict.

That brings the total to 142 (plus one observer state) of 193 UN members.

War in Gaza is worsening humanitarian conditions in Syria: UN official

Israel’s war on Gaza has increased commodity prices in Syria due to global shipping disruptions, and “a significant increase” in Israeli air attacks against targets in the country, according to the United Nations resident and humanitarian coordinator for Syria, Adam Abdelmoula.

Israel has launched hundreds of air strikes in Syria since civil war broke out in 2011, targeting Iran-backed forces including Hezbollah as well as Syrian army positions, but attacks have increased since Israel’s war with Hamas, a Hezbollah ally, began on October 7.

“The targeting of the airports in Syria” has also affected humanitarian air services, Abdelmoula said, adding that “this past year, we had to cancel 49 humanitarian flights”.

The UN official appealed to the international community for about $4bn in humanitarian assistance for Syria, warning funding was almost non-existent and that a lack of support would push more Syrians to emigrate.

Israeli raid destroys house in Lebanon’s Aita al-Shaab: Report

Lebanon’s National News Agency has reported that two air-to-surface missiles targeted a house in the town of Aita al-Shaab, in southern Lebanon, completely destroying it. It did not provide additional information on the number of casualties.

Israeli artillery shelling also targeted Lebanon’s southern towns of Kfarkela, Wadi Al-Asafir and Tallet Al-Hamams, as well as the outskirts of the towns of Al-Adisa and Hula.

Euro-Med Monitor: Israel ‘systematically killing’ Palestinian tech experts

The Geneva-based Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor says the Israeli army has systematically assassinated dozens of programmers, information technology experts, and computer engineering analysts in the Gaza Strip.

The rights group compiled a list of the hundreds of tech professionals killed by the Israeli military in the past few months It included programmer Haitham al-Nabahin, who was killed with his wife in a house they fled to in Bureji refugee camp.

In addition to killing the experts, the Israeli army has also been destroying the headquarters of communication companies and other technology infrastructure, the organisation reports.

“These crimes appear to be part of Israel’s public policies aimed at making the Gaza Strip uninhabitable by destroying fundamental life structures and eliminating talent. This will certainly lead to a paralysed society incapable of quickly recovering from the disastrous fallout from Israel’s serious crimes committed during that period.”

UN aid chief: ‘We need Israel to lift all impediments to Gaza aid’

Martin Griffiths, the UN’s chief emergency relief coordinator, in a rare move directly names Israel as responsible for “blocking” Gaza aid. He adds Israel needs to “lift all impediments to aid” and to agree to an immediate ceasefire.

“Limits to aid distribution within Gaza are set by those who block the movements of convoys meant to feed tens of thousands of critically hungry people,” he writes on X. “They are set by those who denied the access of every fifth humanitarian mission to northern Gaza in the first half of March. They are set by those who block entry of life-saving supplies for hospitals and water purification.”

Why, after all this time, are Western politicians still talking about Israel's right to defend itself? Must be some weird and distorted version of "the best defense is a good offense."

Judicial review demanded of UK government’s arming of Israel

The Global Legal Action Network (GLAN) and Al-Haq rights groups have been allowed by the UK government to participate in hearings that seek a judicial review of London’s refusal to stop arming Israel during its war on Gaza.

David Lammy, the shadow foreign minister, urged Foreign Secretary David Cameron to publish formal legal advice on whether Israel is violating international law.

“Speaking about intent in the context of international humanitarian law is quite misleading. If a state fails to distinguish military and civilian objects, or to take reasonable precautions or to make a proper proportionality assessment, that amounts to a violation and it’s immaterial whether or not they intended to cause such harm,” Charlotte Andrews-Brisco, a lawyer with GLAN, told the Guardian newspaper.

“This is a textbook case of the war crime of starvation of individuals as a method of warfare.”

US must suspend arms transfers to Israel ‘to stop genocide’

Democratic politician Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez told the US House of Representatives the American government must temporarily stop giving weapons to Israel in light of its “genocidal acts” in Gaza.

“If you want to know what an unfolding genocide looks like, open your eyes,” she said in a speech.

“It looks like the forced famine of 1.1 million innocents. It looks like thousands of children eating grass as their bodies consume themselves while trucks of food are slowed and halted just miles away. It looks like good and decent people who do nothing, or too little, too late.

“The time is now to force compliance with US law and the standards of humanity, and fulfill our obligations to the American people to suspend the transfer of US weapons to the Israeli government in order to stop and prevent further atrocities.”

‘Moral failure’: US House approves bill banning UNRWA funding

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/3/22/moral-failure-us-house-approves-bill-that-would-ban-unrwa-funding

Washington, DC – The US House of Representatives approved a $1.2 trillion funding bill that would ban funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) amid the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

The measure, which passed in a 286 to 134 vote on Friday, would keep the government fully functioning in advance of a partial shutdown deadline.

‘Famine is imminent’: UN says aid mission to northern Gaza thwarted

About 7,500 people in northern Gaza were supposed to get food assistance but the mission was unsuccessful because “access denied”. “Famine, particularly in the north, is imminent,” the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a post on X.

More on the UNSC fallout

Blinken says Russia, China ‘cynically vetoed’ Gaza resolution

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused Russia and China of “cynically” using their vetoes to block a US-backed draft resolution at the UN Security Council on a Gaza ceasefire.

“On the resolution, which got very strong support, but then was cynically vetoed by Russia and China, I think we were trying to show the international community a sense of urgency about getting a ceasefire,” Blinken told reporters in Israel.

Lol now Blinken is playing the victim, your resolution didn't even call for a immediate ceasefire and was supposed to be delivered a month ago. Your resolution is the opposite of showing a sense of urgency.

Israel’s Rafah operation a ‘red line’; must be in UN resolution: France

France’s ambassador to the UN, Nicolas de Riviere, says the language on the US draft resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza was “not strong enough”.

“If you make the ceasefire dependent on the release of hostages, you take the risk of having thousands and thousands of more killings in the Gaza Strip in the weeks and months to come,” de Riviere told Al Jazeera.

“So you need the immediate and unconditional release of hostages – but you need a ceasefire right now. It has to stop. What’s happening right now is totally contrary to the Geneva Conventions.”

The French envoy said the draft’s language on Israel’s plan to attack Rafah was “weak as well”. “You have to explain to Israel an operation on Rafah is off limits. It’s a red line and this has been said by many leaders as well. This should be in the resolution.”

Hamas lauds rejection of ‘biased’ US resolution at UNSC

Hamas welcomed the resounding rejection of the US draft resolution at the UN Security Council calling for a Gaza ceasefire.

The group that governs the strip says the resolution would enable Israel to continue its military operations and “gave it cover and legitimacy for the war of extermination” against Palestinians.

“The resolution did not include an explicit demand for an immediate cessation of the Zionist aggression against Gaza,” it said.

Hamas also thanked Russia, China, and Algeria for voting against the “biased” resolution and said the humanitarian situation in Gaza demands an urgent ceasefire. The group accused the US government of providing military and political backing for Israel’s war.

UN Security Council deadlock ‘costing lives’: Amnesty chief

Agnes Callamard, secretary-general of Amnesty International, says the UN Security Council continues to be stuck in a “macabre checkmate” as Palestinians are dying.

“It is costing lives, preventing aid from reaching Palestinians who are being starved, and making the return of civilian hostages held in Gaza more elusive,” she wrote on X, renewing her call for an immediate ceasefire.

Russia, China and Algeria voted against the latest resolution introduced by the US – after Washington vetoed three previous resolutions – as it contained no explicit call for an immediate truce and linked it to a captive exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas.

The Elders group says national interests put above human lives in UNSC vote

The Elders group of world leaders says the UN Security Council is jeopardising its credibility after “descending into a display of cynical power” at today’s vote on Gaza.

“On every occasion, national self-interest is placed above the responsibility to prevent atrocities,” says Mary Robinson, chair of the group founded by Nelson Mandela in 2007.

“Our common humanity compels us to push for change to save lives and prevent famine. Governments must use all leverage at their disposal to push the parties to agree to an immediate ceasefire,” said a statement from the former president of Ireland and ex-UN high commissioner for human rights.

“Anyone who favours cynical gestures over serious effort will be rightly damned by history.”

The cynical gesture is the US using its veto on Februari 20th saying the will present a modified resolution in a few days. Now after a month they come with a version that puts conditions on a ceasefire and only really calls for ongoing negotiations...

On every occasion the US puts Israel's national self-interest above the ongoing genocide.

Hezbollah launches new strikes on Israeli positions near Lebanon

The armed Lebanese group claimed four attacks on Israeli positions, the latest an Israeli-occupied area in southern Lebanon’s Kfarchouba. Hezbollah said it hit a deployment of Israeli soldiers with artillery strikes in Jal al-Alam, killing at least one soldier and wounding another.

It also claimed an attack on the Metulla military site that hit a tank, and said it targeted soldiers in the vicinity of Zarit barracks with artillery fire.

Israeli military attacks Hezbollah buildings with air raids

The Israeli military released aerial footage it says shows massive air raids on structures used by Hezbollah. The attacks targeted buildings in southern Lebanon’s Khiam, Aita al-Shaab, and Taybeh, it said.

Lebanese armed group says it targeted a building where Israeli soldiers were stationed at the Zarit settlement on the Israel-Lebanon border – the latest in a series of attacks.

‘Millions’ pour into Yemeni streets in weekly pro-Palestinian marches

A sea of people took to the streets in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen in the latest march to oppose Israel’s war on Gaza and express solidarity with Palestinians.

The footage below shows the al-Sabeen Square in the capital Sanaa, which has been the main gathering place for demonstrators since the start of the war – and US and UK attacks on Yemen since January to stop Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.

Nasreddin Amer, deputy head of the media authority of the Houthis, says “millions” joined the marches on the second Friday of Ramadan as with previous weeks.

UK, US conduct raids in Yemen: News report

Houthi-affiliated TV channel Al-Masirah reports the American and British militaries carried out two raids on al-Sabeen district in the capital, Sanaa. Four air strikes also occurred in al-Wahda district, also in Sanaa, al-Masirah said.

The Iran-aligned Houthis, who control the most populous parts of Yemen, have carried out dozens of attacks on vessels with commercial ties to the US, the United Kingdom and Israel in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November. The group says the attacks are a response to Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

Looks like Israel is going to destroy (the rest of) Al-Shifa hospital.

Israel demands surrender of people remaining inside al-Shifa Hospital

The Israeli army has told people remaining inside the besieged al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City to surrender themselves. Witnesses at the scene told Al Jazeera the issue was ordered to hundreds trapped inside as sounds of heavy gunfire and explosions continue to rock the area.

The Israeli military previously ordered people inside al-Shifa Hospital to evacuate despite intense battles going on inside and outside the last operational health facility in northern Gaza.

Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital and others at ‘breaking point’: UN

The UN’s top aid official in the occupied Palestinian territories, Jamie McGoldrick, described the dire situation after a mission to the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza.

“They’re really struggling to provide the services required for the patients coming in, especially children,” he said “But there’s also a lot of trauma patients coming in. Many coming in from the food distributions where there’s been a lot of injuries,” he added in reference to repeated Israeli attacks on Palestinian aid-seekers.

McGoldrick said after the Israeli raids on the al-Shifa Hospital in central Gaza that started earlier this week, many people are also rushing to Kamal Adwan, which is overwhelmed.

“So we have to get more support, more supplies and more fuel in to make sure the hospital keeps running.”

Israeli drones circling around Rafah, residents ‘terrified’

The drones have not stopped hovering near the vicinity of the Kuwaiti Hospital in the past few hours, along with other central areas of Rafah. They have been circling to gather more intelligence information about possible targets expected to be hit within the coming hours.

We have also noticed the large size of these military drones as they fly at very low altitudes. Residents are completely terrified and intimidated because they believe there is going to be an imminent attack, not knowing when and where it will take place.

Media watchdog ‘gravely concerned’ over detained journalists

The Committee to Protect Journalists pressed Israeli authorities to “immediately and unconditionally” release media workers arrested at al-Shifa Hospital this week. “The [Israeli army] need to be fully transparent about journalists who have been detained and refrain from any attempts to block the work of journalists at al-Shifa Hospital and all of Gaza,” said Carlos Martinez de la Serna, CPJ’s programme director.

“CPJ is gravely concerned by these arrests and calls on the [Israeli army] to immediately release those held  and provide an explanation for their arrests.”

It said an unspecified number of journalists including Mahmoud Elewa, a freelance correspondent with Al Jazeera Media Network, and Mohamad Arab, a freelance journalist with Al Araby TV, are among those missing.

UNRWA chief tells Israel ‘no time to boast’ amid humanitarian disaster

The Israeli government earlier released a chart allegedly showing it is allowing a lot of food and life-saving supplies into Gaza, but the head of the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) challenged that claim.

“No time to boast,” Philippe Lazzarini wrote on X, adding aid to Gaza is nowhere near enough.

Six months into the war, Israel is allowing in an average of 150 trucks per day, whereas as many as 700 came into Gaza before the war, he noted.

“This is a man-made catastrophe. It can still be reversed through political will and decisions.”

US already preparing their veto for tomorrow

US criticises new UNSC resolution on Gaza

The 10 elected members of the UN Security Council have put forth a new resolution on Israel’s war on Gaza, shortly after Russia and China vetoed a US-drafted text on Friday.

The new draft resolution demands an immediate humanitarian truce for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan “leading to a permanent sustainable ceasefire”, according to The Associated Press news agency.

It also demands “the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages ” and emphasises the urgent need to protect civilians and deliver humanitarian aid throughout the Gaza Strip.

The Russian, Chinese and Algerian ambassadors have urged council members to support it, but US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said the text’s current form “fails to support sensitive diplomacy in the region. Worse, it could actually give Hamas an excuse to walk away from the deal on the table."

Arab countries declare ‘full support’ for new UNSC resolution

The Arab Group at the UN has declared its full support for the latest UNSC resolution on Gaza, which was sponsored by the 10 elected members of the council.

The draft document demands “an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a permanent sustainable ceasefire,” according to a statement by the Arab Group.

“In this Holy Month of Ramadan, the most sacred month in Islam, the Arab Group appeals to all members of the Security Council to act with unit and urgency to hold the bloodshed, preserve human lives and avert further human suffering and destruction. It is long past time for a ceasefire,” the group said.

The UNSC is set to vote on the latest text on Saturday. It comes after Russia and China vetoed a draft resolution proposed by the US, saying the document was “a effective green light for Israel to mount a military operation in Rafah,” where more than a million Palestinians are sheltering.

US fighter jets bombed Houthi weapons storage sites in Yemen: Report

US fighter jets from the USS Dwight D Eisenhower aircraft carrier bombed three underground storage facilities in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen late on Friday, a US official told The Associated Press news agency (AP).

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a military operation not yet made public, told the AP that the aircraft carrier is in the Red Sea.

Earlier, the Houthi-affiliated TV channel Al Masirah reported that US and UK militaries carried out two raids on al-Sabeen district in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. Al Masirah also reported four other attacks in Sanaa’s al-Wahda district.

The US raids are aimed at putting an end to the Houthis’s campaign of drone and missile attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, which the Yemeni rebel group describe as an effort to pressure Israel to end its war on Gaza.

Houthis condemn US attacks on Yemen’s capital

A spokesman for the Houthis has condemned US air attacks on the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, saying the raids will not deter their attacks on Israeli ships in the Red Sea. “The US raids on the capital, Sanaa, are a continuation of the aggression launched with Britain to protect Israel and encourage it to continue its crimes in the Gaza Strip,” said Mohammed Abdul-Salam in a post on X.

“We confirm that the raids will not prevent us from continuing to target Israeli ships or those heading to the ports of occupied Palestine.”

Keep stalling useless twats.

UN vote on new Gaza ceasefire text postponed until Monday: Report

A vote at the UN Security Council on a new text calling for an “immediate” ceasefire in the war in Gaza has been postponed until Monday, according to diplomatic sources quoted by the AFP news agency. Russia and China on Friday vetoed a US resolution, which was also opposed by Arab states, for stopping short of explicitly demanding Israel immediately end its campaign in Gaza.

The new ceasefire text was meant to go to a vote on Saturday, but was pushed back to allow further discussions, the diplomatic sources told AFP. The tougher draft resolution, seen by AFP, “demands an immediate ceasefire” for the ongoing Muslim holy month of Ramadan that leads “to a permanent sustainable ceasefire”, the agency said.

It also reportedly calls for the “immediate and unconditional” release of hostages seized by Hamas and the lifting of “all barriers” to humanitarian aid flowing into Gaza. The report added that eight of the council’s 10 non-permanent members have been working on the draft.

Activists in US, UK protest against Israeli defence firm Elbit

Pro-Palestine activists in the US and UK have launched protests against the Israeli defence company Elbit, accusing it of profiting from Israel’s war on Gaza and abuses in the occupied West Bank.

In the US state of New Hampshire, activists blockaded the entrance to Elbit’s manufacturing facility for four hours on Friday, with some of them chaining themselves to weighted tyres in the driveway, according to media reports and videos posted online.

Eight activists were arrested in New Hampshire, according to media reports.

In the UK, activists have set up a protest camp in front of Elbit’s headquarters in the city of Bristol, as part of a campaign to get local authorities to evict the company from its premises.

The activists have previously broken inside the building in Bristol, occupied its roof and blockaded its gates. They’ve also sprayed red paint on the buildings of companies they say work with Elbit, including the law firm MLL Legal in London.

UK’s Cameron urged to publish legal advice on Israel’s war on Gaza

An opposition legislator has urged the UK’s Foreign Secretary David Cameron to publish the legal advice he has received on Israel’s compliance with international humanitarian law in Gaza.

In a letter to Cameron, David Lammy, a Labour MP and the UK’s shadow foreign secretary, noted that British regulations make it clear that arms export licenses should not be granted if there is a clear risk that the items could be used to commit violations of international humanitarian law.

“The situation in Gaza could not be more serious,” Lammy said in his letter. With the death toll approaching 32,000 and much of Gaza “completely devastated”, the UK Foreign Office must confirm whether it has received any legal advice since October 7 that Israel is in breach of its commitments under international humanitarian law or is at clear risk of being so, the legislator added.

Five Palestinians killed in Israeli attack on Rafah

The bodies of five Palestinians, including four children, have been recovered from the rubble of a house that was destroyed in an Israeli attack in southern Gaza, according to Al Jazeera Arabic.

The two-storey house, located between the cities of Rafah and Khan Younis, was bombed at dawn, Al Jazeera Arabic reported, citing correspondents on the ground.

It also reported a number of deaths and wounded in Khan Younis following an Israeli artillery attack, and said clashes were ongoing between Palestinian fighters and Israeli forces in Gaza City, including near al-Shifa Hospital.

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic are reporting that Israeli jets have bombed several tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in Deir el-Balah in the central Gaza Strip. The attacks killed and wounded several people.

Five children killed in Rafah

We have seen a surge in the presence of Israel’s surveillance and attack drones in Rafah in the last 24 hours. There have been air strikes overnight in the eastern part of Rafah city, where a residential home was targeted and destroyed. Five children of a displaced family were reported killed in this building, with seven more injured. They were all transferred to the al-Najjar Hospital in Rafah.

In the western part of the city, there have been almost constant naval shelling, dealing damage to the buildings in the area.

Around the al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, the Israeli military has systematically been setting buildings on fire. The army continues to operate aggressively inside the hospital, damaging property and medical equipment. The entire area has turned into a combat zone.

The number of people killed in the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip now stands at 32,142, the Health Ministry has said in a statement. At least 74,412 people have been injured since October 7. The latest figures include 72 people who died and 114 who were wounded over the past 24 hours.

Five people trapped in al-Shifa Hospital amid siege killed: Ministry

The Ministry of Health in Gaza has announced the death of five wounded Palestinians who were trapped at al-Shifa Hospital amid Israel’s siege of the medical compound in Gaza City. The ministry said they had been left for six days without water, food, and health services.

It called on the UN and the international community to intervene to save the remaining medical staff and patients at the medical compound.
