What happens to Palestinian women in Israeli prisons?

Palestinians who emerge from Israeli prisons often speak of the physical abuse, solitary confinement and terrible living conditions that they’ve endured. But is it even tougher for women?

Now You Know talks to Hadeel Shatara, a former Palestinian prisoner.

She was released during the first wave of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement. Hadeel shares her story and what female prisoners endure behind bars.

Israel detaining 14-year-old Palestinian boy without charge, trial

Israeli forces are holding Muin Ghassan Fahed Salahat without charge or trial in “administrative detention” based on “secret evidence” that has not been disclosed to him or his lawyer, according to a rights group.

Muin, who was taken from the occupied West Bank, is the youngest Palestinian child on record to be issued an administrative detention order, said Defense for Children International – Palestine (DCIP).

He has been detained for at least four months.

“Administrative detention violates fundamental due process rights, yet Israeli forces are now expanding this draconian policy to detain Palestinian children indefinitely without charge or trial,” said Ayed Abu Eqtaish, accountability program director at DCIP.

“Muin’s case sets a dangerous precedent, showing that no Palestinian child, regardless of age, is safe from arbitrary imprisonment under Israel’s military rule.

According to Palestinian groups, Israel is holding some 3,405 Palestinians in administrative detention.

Israeli forces continues raids across occupied West Bank

According to Al Jazeera Arabic:

  • Israeli forces raided a house and fired tear gas after storming the town of Sa’ir, northeast of Hebron.
  • The soldiers also raided the homes of Palestinians in the Nawawra area in the town of Tuqu, southeast of Bethlehem and arrested a young man there.
  • They also stormed the university neighbourhood in the city of Hebron, as well as Nablus, Bethlehem and al-Baqa’a ash-Sharqiya.
  • Meanwhile, in Jerusalem, an Israeli court issued an evacuation order for a Palestinian family from their historic home in the Old City, so it could be annexed by a nearby synagogue.

Trump once again threatens Hamas, Palestinians with ‘hell’ in Gaza

Trump has called on Hamas to release “all” of the captives still in the territory immediately, or face “HELL”.

Trump has repeatedly made that threat before. In a new post on his social media platform Truth Social, he wrote, addressing Hamas, “‘Shalom Hamas’ means Hello and Goodbye – You can choose. Release all of the Hostages now, not later, and immediately return all of the dead bodies of the people you murdered, or it is OVER for you”.

Only sick and twisted people keep bodies, and you are sick and twisted!” the president added. “I am sending Israel everything it needs to finish the job, not a
single Hamas member will be safe if you don’t do as I say.”

The comment appeared to follow Trump’s meeting with previously released captives. “This is your last warning!” he wrote. “For the leadership, now is the time to leave Gaza, while you still have a chance. Also, to the People of Gaza: A beautiful Future awaits, but not if you hold Hostages. If you do, you are DEAD! Make a SMART decision. RELEASE THE HOSTAGES NOW, OR THERE WILL BE HELL TO PAY LATER!”

Int’l committee must investigate Israel’s holding of dead bodies in Gaza

The Israeli army has been holding the bodies of dozens of Palestinians killed during its genocide in the Gaza Strip beginning on 7 October, and Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor has called for the creation of an independent international investigation committee into organ theft suspicions.

Euro-Med Monitor has documented the Israeli army’s confiscation of dozens of dead bodies from Al-Shifa Medical Complex and the Indonesian Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip, and others from the vicinity of the so-called “safe corridor” (Salah al-Din Road) designated for displaced people heading to the central and southern parts of the Strip.

The National Campaign to Retrieve Martyrs’ Bodies, a non-governmental organization, said, “Israeli occupation authorities are holding the bodies of 198 documented martyrs in 2024.”

The group noted that the figure constitutes one-third of the 641 bodies held in Israel’s “Cemeteries of Numbers” and morgues, as documented by the campaign.

The so-called “Cemeteries of Numbers” are unmarked graves bordered with stones, each bearing a metal plate with a number instead of the deceased’s name. The numbers correspond to individual files kept by Israeli security authorities

In September 2019, the Israeli Supreme Court ruled that military commanders could temporarily withhold Palestinian bodies killed by Israeli forces for potential use as “bargaining chips” in future negotiations.

Withholding bodies of dead Palestinians and not return them to their families for proper burial is a cruel practice and a violation of international humanitarian law and United Nations Convention against Torture, said the Haifa-based Adalah – The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel said today.

Responding to directions by the new Israeli Defense Minister, Naftali Bennett, who ordered all bodies of Palestinians who attacked or who are alleged to have attacked Israelis to be held and not returned to their families, Adalah‘s General Director, Attorney Hassan Jabareen, stated that, "No country in the world allows itself to hold and to use bodies as a card for negotiation and political bargaining. These practices violate international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law, including the UN Convention against Torture, which absolutely prohibits such cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment."

Israel currently holds corpses of 51 Palestinians, according Muhammad Alyan, representative of the families whose sons or daughters have been held since April 2016.

US holding direct talks with Hamas: Reports

The Trump administration has been conducting clandestine talks with Hamas on releasing US captives held in Gaza, according to several media reports.

US special envoy for hostage affairs Adam Boehler has been holding the direct talks with Hamas in recent weeks in Doha, a source told the Reuters news agency, corroborating the news first reported by US outlet Axios.

Israel learned about parts of the talks through various other channels besides the US itself, one unnamed source told Axios.

While the talks’ focus has been on releasing US captives, they have also included discussions on releasing all remaining captives as well, the outlet reported sources as saying.

The Israeli Consul General in New York, Ofir Akunis, responded to the report of direct talks saying, “They can talk with Hamas, that’s ok.”

In an interview with Fox Business, Akunis said: “If the White House wants to talk directly with Hamas and put them under pressure to release more hostages, we would be happy to see more hostages with their families.”

Boehler’s office and the White House have not yet commented on the reports.

Until recently, the US had avoided direct discussions with Hamas, with the US State Department having designated the group as a “foreign terrorist” organisation in 1997.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the initial contact between the two parties occurred last month in Doha, where US negotiator Adam Boehler requested the release of captives with US citizenship.

Hamas responded by releasing Sagui Dekel Chen from captivity on February 15.

The newspaper quotes unnamed US and Hamas officials, as well as two Arab mediators in its report.

White House press secretary confirms US-Hamas talks

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt has confirmed that the Trump administration has been engaged in talks with Hamas.

Speaking at a news briefing, Leavitt said that “the special envoy who’s engaged in those negotiations does have the authority to talk to anyone.”

Leavitt added that Israel was consulted on the matter and that President Trump believes in “dialogue and talking to people around the world to do what’s in the best interest of the American people”.

“These are ongoing talks and discussions, I’m not going to detail them here, there are American lives at stake.”

Israel claims it was consulted on US-Hamas direct talks

Israel says it had been consulted by the US on direct talks with Hamas to secure the release of US captives held in Gaza, which we have been reporting on.

“In consultation with the United States, Israel expressed its opinion on direct talks with Hamas,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement after the White House confirmed its envoy had spoken directly with Hamas, in a shift from long-held US policy.

Smotrich in Washington for US Treasury meetings

Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich is in Washington for meetings at the US Treasury Department.

In a post on X, Smotrich wrote that “after four years in which, under the Biden administration, there was no ministerial-level meeting between the US Treasury Department and the Israeli government – we are now entering the US Treasury Department for a very important meeting”.

Smotrich thanked President Trump and his administration for their “unequivocal support for the State of Israel” and the “full backing they are giving us”. He said that at the meeting, officials would discuss economic and strategic cooperation between the US and Israel.

Qatar condemns Shin Bet for its ‘false accusations’, says no aid ever sent to Hamas

Qatar has condemned Israel’s Shin Bet security agency for its “false accusations” that Doha supplied aid to Hamas.

The International Media Office of the State of Qatar said the following in a statement on Wednesday:

False accusations made by the Shin Bet security agency linking Qatari aid to the October 7 attack are yet another example of deflection driven by self-interest and self-preservation in Israeli politics.

The State of Qatar is a strong supporter of the Palestinian people and has provided humanitarian support to families in Gaza over many years. Qatari aid has included essential supplies such as food and medicine, as well as the provision of electricity to power homes.

It is well known within Israel and internationally that all aid sent from Qatar to Gaza was transferred with the full knowledge, support, and supervision of the current and previous Israeli administrations and their security agencies – including the Shin Bet.

No aid has ever been delivered to Hamas’s political or military wing. For example, the mechanism for aid to families involved close coordination with the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO), with funds transferred to the World Food Programme. Funds were subsequently transferred directly to beneficiaries through programmes approved by Israel.

In addition, Qatari-funded fuel was coordinated with the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and transferred through the Kerem Shalom [Karem Abu Salem] commercial crossing, which is the only designated crossing in Israel for the entry of goods into Gaza.

At this critical juncture, the Shin Bet and other Israeli security agencies should focus on saving the remaining hostages and finding a solution that ensures long-term regional security, rather than resorting to diversionary tactics such as scapegoating Qatar for political longevity. Claims that Qatari aid went to Hamas are entirely false and serve as evidence that the accusers are intent on prolonging the war.

Despite these unwarranted attacks, Qatar will continue to mediate towards peace because of its belief in diplomacy as the only way forward to a better future for both Palestinians and Israelis.

UN food agency says it has 2 weeks’ worth of supplies in Gaza

The UN food agency says it only has enough food supplies in the Gaza Strip to keep public kitchens and bakeries open for less than two weeks after Israel halted the entry of food, fuel, medicine and other supplies.

Rights groups have accused Israel of committing crimes against humanity by blocking aid delivery into the enclave. Israel has also been accused of reneging on the Gaza ceasefire that ended its brutal 15 months of war on the enclave.

Israel allowed humanitarian aid during the first six weeks of the ceasefire. But the World Food Program said on Wednesday that its stocks are low because it prioritised delivering food to the population.

The UN agency also warned that its fuel stocks would only last for a few weeks.

South Africa accuses Israel of using ‘starvation as weapon of war’

South Africa is the latest country to denounce Israel for cutting off aid into Gaza, which it said is further proof it is weaponising “starvation” against Palestinians.

“South Africa strongly condemns the refusal of Israel to allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip and its closure of border crossings at a time when the people of Gaza are experiencing immeasurable suffering and urgently need food, shelter and medical supplies,” said South Africa’s foreign ministry in a press statement.

“Preventing food from entering Gaza is a continuation of Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon of war as part of the ongoing campaign of what the ICJ [International Court of Justice] ruled to be plausible genocide against the Palestinian people.”

Back in January 2024, South Africa brought a genocide case against Israel to the ICJ. The court issued a binding order for Israel to stop acts of genocide by scaling up humanitarian aid.

‘There is simply nothing’: Food is scarce in Gaza amid Israel’s block on aid

Palestinians in Gaza told Al Jazeera that Israel’s latest blockade of the flow of humanitarian aid has caused severe food shortages and high prices at a time when the entirety of the territory’s population is facing enormous needs — and as many are fasting during the day for the holy month of Ramadan.

“There was already a shortage of goods even before the closures, and this has only made the situation worse, increasing the suffering of the people,” said Fathi Abu al-Ula, in Khan Younis.

“Prices have skyrocketed, rising to three or even four times what they were—especially for vegetables and essential food supplies. This is particularly true for baby food and other child-related products.”

Abu al-Ula added that prices have risen in response to the high demand. “This is especially critical during this holy month, when people rely on shopping for essential food items, particularly vegetables, to observe Ramadan, prepare for religious gatherings, and host family events,” he said.

“Families need food for their children, the elderly, and the sick — many of whom have already been suffering from malnutrition for a long time.”

Radwan Ahmed, also in Khan Younis, said that there was no chicken, meat or soda to be found at the market.

“There is absolutely nothing,” he said. “We started fasting three days ago, so imagine what the situation will be like after a week of fasting. There is nothing, and aid is not reaching the poor and those in need. There is simply nothing.”

UK, France and Germany urge Israel to restore aid to Gaza

Israel must meet international obligations to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza, the foreign ministers of the UK, France and Germany have said in a joint statement.

“We call on the government of Israel to abide by its international obligations to ensure full, rapid, safe and unhindered provision of humanitarian assistance to the population in Gaza,” the statement read.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said on Sunday that “the entry of all goods and supplies to the Gaza Strip will be halted,” accusing Hamas of refusing to accept a framework for the continuation of talks proposed by US special envoy Steve Witkoff.

“Humanitarian aid should never be contingent on a ceasefire or used as a political tool,” it added, calling on all parties to uphold the ceasefire.

Five UN Security Council nations call on Israel to let aid into Gaza

Five European members of the UN Security Council have called on Israel to “immediately let humanitarian aid flow into the Gaza Strip”, and called on parties “to find a way forward to the next phases of the ceasefire agreement and hostage release deal”.

The deputy ambassador to the United Nations from France, Jay Dharmadhikari, also speaking on behalf of Denmark, Greece, Slovenia and the United Kingdom, called on Israel “to abide by its obligations under international law and to allow and facilitate the safe, unconditional, massive and hand-in-dirt delivery of humanitarian aid at scale, as well as to ensure the protection of civilians and other protected persons, including humanitarian workers in line with international humanitarian law”.

The diplomat added, “We need a permanent ceasefire that can pave the way for the release of all remaining hostages and for the reconstruction of Gaza”.

‘Against all odds’ UNRWA remains in Gaza: agency

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees continues to operate in Gaza “against all odds”, the agency says.

In a post on X, UNRWA wrote that despite Israel’s block on humanitarian aid entering the territory, UNRWA teams have continued to operate there, including by providing food, shelter, and healthcare.

“The needs are vast, and continuous assistance is needed,” the agency wrote. “Humanitarian aid must continue to flow.”

Netanyahu tells new military chief he has ‘heavy responsibility’

As we’ve been reporting, Israeli Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir begins his term as Israel’s new military chief today.

Netanyahu addressed the incoming military chief at his inauguration in Tel Aviv this morning, commending him for “the Zionism that beats within you … and the professional commitment as the link between the [military] and other security officials to the prime minister”.

“A very heavy responsibility rests on your shoulders,” Netanyahu told Zamir. “The results of the war will have significance for generations, we are determined to achieve … victory.”

New chief Zamir pledges to expand Israel’s army, return all captives

The incoming military chief, Eyal Zamir, has delivered inaugural remarks in Tel Aviv, reports The Times of Israel.

He promised to lead the military “to victory” and bring home all captives from Gaza. “Our moral duty is clear; bring everyone back home, in any way possible and as quickly as possible,” he said in comments carried by The Times of Israel.

Zamir also said all Israeli society must participate in defending the country, a remark seemingly directed at the ultra-Orthodox community, some of whom have resisted calls for mandatory conscription.

Israel’s army, he said, “is the army of the people”.

“Facing external threats, we must have cohesion of the ranks. We will work to expand the ranks. The defensive missions must be divided.”

Far-right Israeli figures congratulate new army chief Zamir

Israel’s right-wing Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and former National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir have both cheered the inauguration of army chief Eyal Zamir.

“Total victory and the return of all the hostages is the goal,” said Smotrich in a post on X addressing Zamir. “From my familiarity with you, I know you understand the magnitude of the moment and the importance of the mission.”

Ben-Gvir, who quit Netanyahu’s coalition in January over opposition to the ceasefire deal, urged Zamir to bring a “fresh spirit and new forces”, promote “offensive and ethical officers”, stop “the policy of blocking” right-wing officers and shield the military from foreign influence.

“With determination, courage and decisiveness, you will be able to ensure the strength of the [military] and the security of the state of Israel,” Ben-Gvir said.

New Israeli Army chief of staff ‘wants war'

According to some analysts, Eyal Zamir is an Israeli Army chief of staff who wants war, who likes war. And, he actually has been getting praise from across the Israeli political aisle, both from Netanyahu’s right-wing government and the left wing, the opposition, within Israel.

They have all been praising the army’s chief of staff because the military is seen as something that is not really political within Israel, so it has a lot of backing from across the sects of Israeli society and also from across the Israel political aisle.

But when it comes to what he is inheriting, this is a lot for a new army chief of staff coming in. It’s worth mentioning that the former army chief of staff, Herzi Halevi, resigned because of his failures in the October 7 attacks and the security failures leading up to October 7, and many are calling on Netanyahu to resign for the same reason.

But nevertheless, there is going to be a lot on his plate, because this is a time when the ceasefire deal is very shaky, there are still supposed to be negotiations that are ongoing for phase two, and it’s worth mentioning that the army all this time has been drafting a plan for a return to war and reports in Israeli media indicate that the new chief of staff says that he’s ready to lead Israel to an “absolute victory”, a term that’s been used to Netanyahu throughout the 15 months of fighting in order to keep the war effort going.

Mediator countries responsible for ceasefire’s completion: Egypt FM

Egypt, Qatar and the US have a shared responsibility in pushing for the second phase of the ceasefire in Gaza, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told the Qatar News Agency (QNA).

“The sincere joint efforts made by Egypt and the State of Qatar succeeded last January in reaching a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, which includes three stages, as the first stage has been implemented so far, while there is now a party trying to evade its obligations,” Abdelatty told QNA.

He added that Israel is also obliged to complete the stages of the ceasefire.

Abdelatty stated that Egypt and Qatar are counting on the US to push for the deal’s completion.

“We succeeded in releasing a number of hostages, and now the effort must continue and the second and third stages must be implemented until the release of all hostages,” the minister said, adding that Palestinian prisoners must also be released and that aid must reach Gaza as well.

A day earlier, Arab leaders unanimously agreed – at a summit in Cairo – on a five-year, $53bn plan to rebuild Gaza without displacing Palestinians, countering a proposal by US President Donald Trump that the US “take over” the besieged enclave.

Palestinian foreign ministry calls on the international community to impose sanctions on Israel

The Palestinian foreign ministry has called on the international community to impose sanctions on Israel to stop its aggression and its colonial ambitions.

“While the [Israeli army] continue to exterminate and demolish camps and cities in the northern West Bank, especially in Jenin and Tulkarem, and announce their intention to demolish an entire neighbourhood in Nour Shams [Nur Shams] camp, and deprive our people in the Gaza Strip of their most basic humanitarian needs, their colonial procedures begin to build approximately 1000 new colonial units in East Jerusalem,” the ministry said in a statement.

‘Public execution’: The Israeli checkpoint terrorising a Palestinian town

https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2025/3/5/public-execution-the-israeli-checkpoint-terrorising-a-palestinian-town

Israel put a checkpoint on Deir Sharaf’s main street in October 2022. Since then, life in this occupied West Bank village has suffered and businesses are failing.

The checkpoint, initially a dirt mound barrier, is a chilling reminder of the threat of violence hovering over thousands of Palestinians who are forced to travel through 800 or so West Bank checkpoints and roadblocks every day.

Israeli forces raid, ransack Fatah’s Tulkarem office: Report

The raid started when Israeli forces blew up the main gate to the political party’s headquarters in central Tulkarem, Fatah’s regional secretary Iyad Jarad told the Wafa news agency.

He said Israeli forces broke into the Fatah building, went through the party’s files and vandalised some of their content, including the Palestinian flag and the party banner.

In addition, Israeli forces violently raided two currency exchange shops in Tulkarem and declared them to be illegal operations, according to Wafa.

Israeli army orders demolition of Palestinian homes in Nur Shams refugee camp

The Israeli army issued demolition orders for 17 Palestinian homes in the Nur Shams refugee camp in the northern West Bank on Wednesday, a local official said.

“The occupation army ordered the demolition of 17 homes in the camp to allegedly build a road in the al-Manshiyya neighbourhood in the camp,” Nihad al-Shawish, head of a local service committee in the camp, told Anadolu.

He said the demolitions would leave dozens of families homeless.

Shawish said 11 Palestinian homes were also demolished by the Israeli army in the camp a few days ago. “This is a collective punishment aimed at changing the geography of the camp under false security pretexts” he said.

The Israeli army has been conducting military operations in the northern West Bank since January 21, killing at least 65 people and displacing thousands. Rights groups say violent Israeli raids in the West Bank mirror its 15 months of devastating military offensive in Gaza that killed nearly 50,000 people.

Palestinian authorities fear the deadly crackdown by the Israeli military is part of a broader plan by Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to annex the occupied West Bank.

Israeli forces deploy armoured vehicles in Tulkarem

Israeli forces have deployed armoured vehicles in the northern occupied West Bank governorate of Tulkarem, according to Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Two armoured vehicles made their way from the ‘Einav checkpoint, at the eastern entrance of Anabta, and entered the town through the main road intercepting vehicles, Wafa’s correspondent reported.

Two other armoured vehicles also entered the city from the Jbara military checkpoint, south of the city, the agency’s correspondent said.

Other Israeli military reinforcements, including vehicles and infantry units, were also deployed in the area.

Israel’s military incursion into the city – which has resulted in extensive destruction of infrastructure – has entered its 38th day.

Nine-year-old girl shot by Israeli forces

The Palestinian Red Crescent is reporting that a nine-year-old girl was shot in the head by Israeli forces in the town of Qusra, south of Nablus in the occupied West Bank.

She was taken to Rafidia Hospital, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

Israel set to approve more than 1,000 settlement units in occupied East Jerusalem

The Jerusalem Governorate has expressed its grave concerns about Israel’s plans to approve the construction of more than 1,000 settlement units in occupied East Jerusalem.

In a statement, the Jerusalem Governorate said these plans fall within a systematic colonial policy that aims to swallow up the remaining Palestinian lands, change the demographic reality and national identity of Jerusalem, and impose an occupation reality through the Judaization “Greater Jerusalem” project, which is considered a war crime under international law.

Under the Israeli plan, 380 settlement units will be built in the Nof Zion settlement near the Jabal al-Mukaber area in addition to a school, two synagogues, and commercial areas, the Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported.

The broadcaster said 650 settlement units, commercial areas, a school, a synagogue, a community centre, and kindergartens will also be built between Kibbutz Ramat Rachel and the Jabal Abu Ghneim (also known as Har Homa) settlements near the Palestinian neighborhood of Sur Baher in southern East Jerusalem.

All settlements built on Palestinian lands are considered illegal under international laws.

Israel demolishes Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem during Ramadan

Israeli forces demolished at least four buildings in occupied East Jerusalem during the first week of Ramadan, affecting at least six farming families, Israeli human rights group Ir Amim has reported.

These included a residential home in Beit Hanina and three apartments in the al-Isawiya neighbourhood. This is the first time that demolitions take place during the Muslim holy month, the group said.

According to Ir Amim records, at least 181 apartments have been demolished last year compared with 140 in 2023. In the first two months of this year, 46 buildings have been demolished – “and the trend is only expanding”, read the report.

“Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem are forced to build without permits due to Israel’s discriminatory and racist planning policy that prevents them from obtaining building permits. As a result, many live in daily fear of demolition,” it added.

Israeli forces injure Palestinian journalist: Reports

Journalist Yousef Shehadeh has been injured after Israeli forces stormed the town of Rafat, northwest of occupied East Jerusalem, according to media reports.

Shehadeh and other local journalists were covering the Israeli army’s demolition of the home of Hayel Daifallah accused of being the perpetrator of the ramming attack near the Givat Asaf illegal settlement months ago.

Israel demolished record number of Palestinian structures in 2024: Israeli rights group

An Israeli rights group, Ir Amim, says Israel demolished a record number of Palestinian homes in occupied East Jerusalem last year.

The organisation, which tracks settlement activity and demolitions in the city, said that 181 homes and dozens of other structures were destroyed last year.

Israel also appears to have dropped a longstanding policy against demolishing homes during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which began last weekend, the group stated. It said a residential building and three apartments have been destroyed over the past week.

According to rights groups, discriminatory policies make it nearly impossible for Palestinians to expand or redevelop their neighbourhoods in East Jerusalem, forcing many to build without permits – often the reason Israeli forces tout for demolishing Palestinian structures.

Hind Rajab Foundation files war crimes complaint in Germany against Israeli soldier

The advocacy group has officially filed a criminal complaint in Germany against Shay Friedman, an Israeli soldier suspected of participating in war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, the organisation said.

“The complaint, submitted to the German authorities, outlines serious allegations, including aiding and abetting murder, genocide, and other grave offences under both German and international law,” the Belgium-based group stated.

Friedman is currently in Germany, the organisation said.

The group said it submitted various pieces of evidence “including videos of Friedman destroying civilian infrastructure, including homes”.

Formed late last year, the foundation has pulled together lawyers and activists from around the world to prepare similar cases, primarily based on social media content shared by Israeli soldiers themselves.

Pro-Palestine protests continue at Columbia University

Columbia University students in New York organised a protest yesterday against their university hosting former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

Student protesters demonstrated again earlier today at Columbia University in New York, vowing to remain at a library on campus overnight until three expelled students for pro-Palestine activism are reinstated.

The students were expelled for distributing flyers at a lecture on campus, for a class titled “History of Modern Israel”.

Columbia University President Laura Rosenbury condemned the students’ actions in a statement, pledging disciplinary measures against those who entered the building unlawfully and violated college policies.

Police maintained a strong presence during the protests, which concluded late in the evening, with demonstrators continuing to voice their support for Palestine in the surrounding neighborhood.
