‘Public execution’: The Israeli checkpoint terrorising a Palestinian town

Israel put a checkpoint on Deir Sharaf’s main street in October 2022. Since then, life in this occupied West Bank village has suffered and businesses are failing.

The checkpoint, initially a dirt mound barrier, is a chilling reminder of the threat of violence hovering over thousands of Palestinians who are forced to travel through 800 or so West Bank checkpoints and roadblocks every day.

Israeli forces raid, ransack Fatah’s Tulkarem office: Report

The raid started when Israeli forces blew up the main gate to the political party’s headquarters in central Tulkarem, Fatah’s regional secretary Iyad Jarad told the Wafa news agency.

He said Israeli forces broke into the Fatah building, went through the party’s files and vandalised some of their content, including the Palestinian flag and the party banner.

In addition, Israeli forces violently raided two currency exchange shops in Tulkarem and declared them to be illegal operations, according to Wafa.

Israeli army orders demolition of Palestinian homes in Nur Shams refugee camp

The Israeli army issued demolition orders for 17 Palestinian homes in the Nur Shams refugee camp in the northern West Bank on Wednesday, a local official said.

“The occupation army ordered the demolition of 17 homes in the camp to allegedly build a road in the al-Manshiyya neighbourhood in the camp,” Nihad al-Shawish, head of a local service committee in the camp, told Anadolu.

He said the demolitions would leave dozens of families homeless.

Shawish said 11 Palestinian homes were also demolished by the Israeli army in the camp a few days ago. “This is a collective punishment aimed at changing the geography of the camp under false security pretexts” he said.

The Israeli army has been conducting military operations in the northern West Bank since January 21, killing at least 65 people and displacing thousands. Rights groups say violent Israeli raids in the West Bank mirror its 15 months of devastating military offensive in Gaza that killed nearly 50,000 people.

Palestinian authorities fear the deadly crackdown by the Israeli military is part of a broader plan by Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to annex the occupied West Bank.

Israeli forces deploy armoured vehicles in Tulkarem

Israeli forces have deployed armoured vehicles in the northern occupied West Bank governorate of Tulkarem, according to Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Two armoured vehicles made their way from the ‘Einav checkpoint, at the eastern entrance of Anabta, and entered the town through the main road intercepting vehicles, Wafa’s correspondent reported.

Two other armoured vehicles also entered the city from the Jbara military checkpoint, south of the city, the agency’s correspondent said.

Other Israeli military reinforcements, including vehicles and infantry units, were also deployed in the area.

Israel’s military incursion into the city – which has resulted in extensive destruction of infrastructure – has entered its 38th day.

The Palestinian Red Crescent is reporting that a nine-year-old girl was shot in the head by Israeli forces in the town of Qusra, south of Nablus in the occupied West Bank.

She was taken to Rafidia Hospital, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.
