Mediator countries responsible for ceasefire’s completion: Egypt FM

Egypt, Qatar and the US have a shared responsibility in pushing for the second phase of the ceasefire in Gaza, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told the Qatar News Agency (QNA).

“The sincere joint efforts made by Egypt and the State of Qatar succeeded last January in reaching a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, which includes three stages, as the first stage has been implemented so far, while there is now a party trying to evade its obligations,” Abdelatty told QNA.

He added that Israel is also obliged to complete the stages of the ceasefire.

Abdelatty stated that Egypt and Qatar are counting on the US to push for the deal’s completion.

“We succeeded in releasing a number of hostages, and now the effort must continue and the second and third stages must be implemented until the release of all hostages,” the minister said, adding that Palestinian prisoners must also be released and that aid must reach Gaza as well.

A day earlier, Arab leaders unanimously agreed – at a summit in Cairo – on a five-year, $53bn plan to rebuild Gaza without displacing Palestinians, countering a proposal by US President Donald Trump that the US “take over” the besieged enclave.

Palestinian foreign ministry calls on the international community to impose sanctions on Israel

The Palestinian foreign ministry has called on the international community to impose sanctions on Israel to stop its aggression and its colonial ambitions.

“While the [Israeli army] continue to exterminate and demolish camps and cities in the northern West Bank, especially in Jenin and Tulkarem, and announce their intention to demolish an entire neighbourhood in Nour Shams [Nur Shams] camp, and deprive our people in the Gaza Strip of their most basic humanitarian needs, their colonial procedures begin to build approximately 1000 new colonial units in East Jerusalem,” the ministry said in a statement.
