Amsterdam riots started by ‘Maccabi hooligans’: City councilman

Israeli football fans instigated the violence in Amsterdam after arriving in the city and attacking Palestinian supporters before the Ajax-Maccabi Tel Aviv game, an Amsterdam city council member says.

“They began attacking houses of people in Amsterdam with Palestinian flags, so that’s actually where the violence started,” Councilman Jazie Veldhuyzen told Al Jazeera. “As a reaction, Amsterdammers mobilized themselves and countered the attacks that started on Wednesday by the Maccabi hooligans.”

He said a video emerged of Amsterdam police driving by and “doing nothing” as Israeli fans tore down Palestinian flags at one residence in the city centre.

“The mayor says the police did act, but I would say they acted not at the right moments. They acted only to protect the Maccabi hooligans when Amsterdammers stood up to defend their own people and defend their own houses. And this is when the police showed up to protect the Maccabi fans when they ran away after attacking people.”

Same behavior as Settlers in Israel. Instigate violence than run to the police to claim to be the victim.

Palestine condemns anti-Arab chants in Amsterdam football clashes

Palestine’s foreign ministry condemned anti-Arab chants and the destruction of Palestinian flags in the Dutch capital by fans of an Israeli football club.

The Palestinian Authority urged the Dutch government to investigate those responsible and called for the protection of Palestinians and Arabs in the Netherlands from Israeli settlers and soldiers, the news agency Wafa reports.

The ministry also rejected all forms of violence. Investigations are under way in the Netherlands following multiple violent incidents in Amsterdam involving fans of Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv football club and pro-Palestinian protesters before a Europa League fixture.

Israeli football supporters and Dutch youth clash in Amsterdam

Amsterdam mayor describes ‘hit-and-run’ attacks on Israeli fans

The mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsema, said the violence at a Europa League football match represents an “explosion” of anti-Semitism that has “not been seen in a long time”.

She described “hit and run” attacks on Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters with “hooligans on scooters” seeking out Israeli fans.

“Men on scooters crisscrossed the city looking for Israeli football fans. It was a hit-and-run. I can easily understand that this brings back memories of pogroms,” Halsema said. “Our city has been deeply damaged. Jewish culture has been deeply threatened. This is an outburst of anti-Semitism that I hope to never see again.”

Different accounts say Israeli football supporters instigated the violence by attacking homes with Palestinian flags and pro-Palestine supporters starting on Wednesday.

Israelis evacuated from Amsterdam arrive to Tel Aviv

The first flight carrying Israelis evacuated from Amsterdam after violent clashes with pro-Palestinian protesters after a football match has landed at Ben Gurion International Airport.

“The plane that arrived in Tel Aviv now has passengers evacuated from Amsterdam,” said Liza Dvir, spokeswoman for the airport authority.

About 600 police were deployed after rioting started between Palestinian supporters and Maccabi Tel Aviv fans. At least five people were hospitalized, and dozens of arrests were made.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry said it located all Israeli citizens who were unaccounted for after the clashes broke out.

‘Death to Arabs’ chants omitted in Israeli news coverage of Amsterdam riots

In the Israeli media there’s been extensive coverage of the incident, but what’s been omitted is what led up to the confrontations – the anti-Arab chants, “Death to Arabs”, the provocations and so on.

These kinds of chants are mostly normalised in Israeli sports, you hear them at football games all the time.

So that part of the story – the fact that there was such a strong anti-Arab, anti-Palestinian expression by the Israeli fans in Amsterdam, on the field and in the streets – was omitted from the news coverage because it’s so normalised.

‘Yesssss!’: Israel reacts to Donald Trump’s return to power in US election

It was telling that even before the US presidential election polls closed on Tuesday night, Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir took to X, posting “Yesssss” in English while adding emojis of a flexing bicep and images of the Israeli and American flags.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was only slightly slower in congratulating Trump on his triumph in the US presidential election, becoming the first world leader to do so and framing Trump’s victory as a “powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America”.

Meanwhile, analysts have told Al Jazeera that it will be “slaughter as usual” for Israel in Gaza and Lebanon under the incoming Trump administration.

A congratulatory billboard in Tel Aviv shows US President-elect Donald Trump

Many fear escalation in Israeli-Hezbollah conflict until Trump takes office

This is a strategy that they employed in the last major war with Israel in 2006. They continue to fire rockets and drones across the border, at times hitting Israeli military positions.

They’ve struck deep inside Israel, close to Tel Aviv international airport. But Israel responded to that attack by striking next to Beirut international airport.

Hezbollah acknowledges that Israel controls the skies and that Israel has a more technologically advanced army. But it says it is relying on its fighters, who they say are preventing the Israeli army from advancing deep inside Lebanon.

So, Hezbollah’s strategies are designed to make it costly for the Israeli army, to make sure that the people cannot return to their homes in the north and central Israel.

But this has been costly for both sides, and as there’s no prospect for a ceasefire, many fear, we’re going to see an escalation until the US president-elect, Donald Trump, takes office in January.

Gaza people fear Israel trying to empty north before Trump takes office

New Israeli evacuation orders were issued for residents in the neighbourhoods of Gaza City – this time not for the residents in the north of the territory such as Beit Lahiya, Jabalia, and Beit Hanoon.

The Israeli army claims these neighbourhoods have been used by Palestinian fighters to launch rockets towards the Israeli territories. It has used this pretext to push people out.

People are saying the Israeli military is racing to empty the northern part of Gaza of residents before US President-elect Donald Trump officially takes his position. The Israeli military in the north is using starvation as a weapon and a deadly campaign to force people to flee.

Palestinians right now are living in open spaces, and they don’t have proper shelter after repeated Israeli attacks on evacuation centres.

Lebanon labels Israeli attack in Sidon ‘war crime’

The Lebanese government has accused Israel of carrying out “war crimes” following its deadly drone attack in the southern city of Sidon on Thursday.

Lebanese authorities said an Israeli drone struck a vehicle in the city while a UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) convoy was driving close by. Three people were killed in the attack and several more were injured, including six Malaysian peacekeepers.

Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry described the attack as “an escalation in Israel’s targeting of UNIFIL forces, Lebanese soldiers and civilians constituting war crimes and a blatant violation of international humanitarian law”.

Hezbollah claims to have attacked Israeli naval base near Haifa

The Lebanese armed group says it has launched missiles at the Stella Maris naval base northwest of Haifa. Hezbollah’s statement on Telegram said it was Israel’s “strategic base for naval monitoring and surveillance on the northern coast”.

Hezbollah claims to have attacked Ramat David airbase near Haifa

We reported earlier that the Lebanese armed group claimed to have attacked an Israeli naval base northwest of Haifa city. Since then, the group said it launched missiles at the Ramat David airbase and airport southeast of Haifa.

Hezbollah claims shelling Israeli forces in southern Lebanon

The Lebanese armed group says its artillery has shelled Israeli forces in the Jal al-Allam area, south of the Odaisseh village in southern Lebanon’s Nabatieh governorate.

Hezbollah claims attacks on Israeli forces in three settlements

The Lebanese armed group says it hit Israeli soldiers with missiles in the settlements of Margaliot and Misgav Am in northern Israel’s upper Galilee region. Earlier, Hezbollah also claimed to have attacked the Kiryat Shmona settlement in northern Israel’s Hula Valley with rockets.

Paramedic killed in Israeli air attack on Lebanon’s Tyre district

Zaher Ibrahim Ataya, a paramedic from Lebanon’s southern town of Tyre Harfa, has been killed in an Israeli air strike, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA). The report did not elaborate on the time of the attack, but said the target was a newly established medical centre in the Tyre district on the road linking the town of Deir Qanoun to the village of Ras al-Ain and the city of Naqoura.

At least two killed in Israeli raid in Lebanon’s Nabatieh governorate

At least two people have been killed in the village of Kfar Tebnit in southern Lebanon’s Nabatieh governorate where Israeli aircraft bombed a building on the main road, according to the country’s National News Agency (NNA). The building with residential apartments and commercial shops was completely destroyed, the report said.

Israel blows up houses in Lebanon in 3 border villages: Report

The Israeli army detonated explosives planted inside houses in three border villages in Lebanon that have been battered by the Israel-Hezbollah war, Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reports.

Forces carried out bombing operations inside the villages of Yaroun, Aitaroun and Maroun al-Ras in the Bint Jbeil area, “with the aim of destroying residential homes there”, NNA said. The demolitions are the latest in a string of similar incidents in the border area.

Lebanon’s healthcare system under attack by Israel’s military

The town of Nabatieh has been attacked but this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the widespread destruction taking place in southern Lebanon with villages along the border almost completely destroyed in Israel’s assault.

The health sector is also under attack. There are only seven hospitals that remain open. Eight hospitals have been completely closed down. The health sector is working at about 25 percent capacity than in normal times. Between October 5 and November 5, one child a day has been killed, according to UNICEF. About 10 children a day are also being injured, and the psychological effect of that is incredible.

Israel keeps saying “we are killing thousands of Hezbollah fighters” but the figures we’re getting from Lebanon’s health ministry show a large percentage of the people being killed are women and children.

There’s no diplomatic solution to this right now, there’s no ceasefire talks right now.

Nearly 70 percent of Gaza war dead women and children: UN

The United Nations Human Rights Office says it has verified 8,119 killings of Palestinians in Gaza that came in the first seven months of Israel’s war on the enclave.

Nearly 70 percent of the verified deaths were women and children, it said, condemning what it called Israel’s systematic violation of the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law.

“It is essential that there is due reckoning with respect to the allegations of serious violations of international law through credible and impartial judicial bodies and that, in the meantime, all relevant information and evidence are collected and preserved,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said in a statement accompanying the 32-page report.

About 80 percent of the victims were killed in residential buildings, out of which 44 percent were children and 26 percent women, the report said.

Israel’s continuation of these attacks “demonstrates an apparent indifference to the death of civilians and the impact of the means and methods of warfare selected”, a UN statement said.

‘Unprecedented violations’: UN right chief denounces Israel army conduct

The UN Human Rights Office says justice must be served after issuing a report showing the deadly effects of Israel’s military attack on Gaza for more than a year.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk highlighted “atrocity crimes” and demanded Israel immediately follow its obligation under international law to protect Gaza’s civilians.

Palestinians ‘left to their fate in the streets’ of north Gaza: UN

Louise Wateridge, senior emergency officer for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees in northern Gaza, spoke to Al Jazeera about the situation for Palestinians under Israeli siege. Here are her main points:

  • For an entire month, all attempts by humanitarian organisations to deliver food to people in the besieged areas of northern Gaza have been blocked by the Israeli authorities.
  • The only UN assistance allowed into north Gaza since the start of the siege were supplies to hospitals during medical evacuation missions.
  • Healthcare conditions in northern Gaza remain critical with the Kamal Adwan Hospital hit twice in the past week, and the delivery of life-saving supplies to the al-Awda Hospital denied.
  • The Israeli authorities are preventing Palestinians from accessing essentials for their survival, including water.
  • Humanitarian workers are not able to do their work in safety.
  • Palestinians in the besieged north have no protection as the bombardment continues.
  • People have been left to their fate in the streets, and many remain trapped under rubble with no possibility to save them.
  • On Thursday, people in parts of northern Gaza were ordered out again by Israel’s army.
  • An initial estimate indicates about 14,000 are displaced Palestinians in that area, which includes three UNRWA facilities and six makeshift shelters.

‘Statewide policy of uprooting Indigenous people from their homes’

There’s been three more atrocities committed in the northern part of the Gaza Strip. It’s consistent with the findings of the UN Human Rights Office report: Israel repeatedly fails to protect civilians. This is a statewide organised policy of uprooting Indigenous people from their own homes. What we’re seeing so far – in a little over a month in the northern part of the Strip – is nothing short of the ethnic cleansing of an entire population.

The military declares that northern Gaza is empty of civilians, but we all have people who are still in the north. We have eyewitnesses, we have paramedics – civilians who are still in their homes, including children.

New patterns of attacks carried out by the Israeli military take place at nighttime. The skies of the northern part of the Strip are clouded with drones and quadcopters. It makes movement extremely difficult. It impedes the movement of paramedics. It impedes whoever remains of Civil Defence crews.

People have to rely on themselves, volunteering to get to these bomb sites and remove whoever might have survived these attacks or wait until morning breaks and start digging under the rubble to remove people who might have survived.

And even if they survive these attacks, they end up in a hospital that doesn’t have any medical care whatsoever. They end up dying in these hospitals.

Israeli strike on house in Gaza City kills at least 9

Israeli fighter jets bombed a house in Gaza City’s Daraj neighbourhood a short while ago, killing at least nine people, our Al Jazeera Arabic colleagues report. Many of the victims were children and women, according to sources at the scene.

The strike is the latest deadly attack in northern Gaza over recent hours, following Israel’s bombardment of a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in Gaza City’s Shati refugee camp, which has killed at least 12 people.

Israeli naval ships shell central, southern Gaza

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic report that Israeli gunboats patrolling off the coast of Gaza have opened fire along the shoreline near the Nuseirat refugee camp in the centre of the Palestinian territory as well as firing on Rafah in the south.

The early morning shelling by the Israeli navy was described as extensive.

Local media also report that nine people were killed in an overnight Israeli attack on a house belonging to the Hamada family in the centre of Gaza City in the north of the territory.

Israeli warships kill fisherman on coast of Gaza’s Rafah city

A fisherman has been killed and three others injured in shelling by Israeli warships on the coast of the Rafah city in southern Gaza, according to our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic.

At least 13 others were killed across Gaza overnight, including nine in central Gaza City, one in northern Gaza’s Beit Lahiya town, and three in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the centre of the enclave.

Israeli forces kill 9 in Gaza City strike, bomb refugee camps in central area

There is a rapidly changing situation as the Israeli military continues with its military offensive. They have been targeting multiple, different sites across the Gaza Strip.

The bloodiest attack, in fact, took place in Daraj neighbourhood in the centre of Gaza City where we have been hearing from locals that a residential building has been completely flattened. Nine civilians have been confirmed killed, apparently from the same family.

We have been gathering witness accounts confirming that the attack, the strike, has left behind a great deal of destruction at the site. On top of that, we have been hearing huge explosions coming from the central areas of the Strip. To be precise, in the eastern areas of Bureij and on the coastline of Nuseirat refugee camp.

Four killed in Gaza City, two near Nuseirat

Six Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza City and near central Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp, according to the Wafa news agency. Four of them were killed in a house near the al-Mashtal Hotel northwest of Gaza City and two others were killed west of the Nuseirat refugee camp, the agency said.

Several civilians were also injured in Israeli shelling of the Halima al-Sadia School in northern Gaza’s Jabalia refugee camp, the report added.

Hospitals in northern Gaza overwhelmed and lack critical supplies

We are in direct contact with people in the north, especially those in Beit Lahiya and Gaza City. Civil defence and frontline ambulance crews are battling to operate in these areas. They risk their lives by going to the sites of Israeli attacks to search for anyone who has been killed or injured.

The bombardment has not stopped in the past few hours in particular in Beit Lahiya, where residential homes and agricultural land have been hit. We’ve been getting testimonies that buildings have been destroyed and civilians are stuck underneath.

The streets of Jabalia are strewn with destroyed houses as the Israeli army incursion has not come to an end there. It’s been 35 days under siege. Shrouds have run out in hospitals in the north of the Strip, and civilians are now using blankets to cover those killed in Israeli attacks.

At least 4 people killed in Gaza’s Beit Lahiya

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic have confirmed the killing of four Palestinians in the Israeli attack on northern Gaza’s Beit Lahiya town.

Earlier, Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum reported from central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah that the Israeli bombing of Beit Lahiya has been going on for hours, hitting residential homes and agricultural land.

“We’ve been getting testimonies that buildings have been destroyed and civilians are stuck underneath,” he said.

43,508 Palestinians killed and 102,684 injured in Israel’s war on Gaza

The Health Ministry says the number of people killed in Israel’s attack on Gaza has reached 43,508. The toll includes 39 deaths in the previous 24 hours, it said. Another 102,684 Palestinians have been wounded in the relentless strikes that began in October 2023.

The number of dead is likely far higher with thousands buried in the debris of destroyed buildings. A UN report on Friday said nearly 70 percent of those killed in Gaza are children and women.

Israeli military carries out ‘arrest campaign’ near Jerusalem

Israeli forces have carried out a “large-scale arrest campaign” in the town of ar-Ram northeast of occupied East Jerusalem, according to our Al Jazeera Arabic colleagues.

Israeli military operations have been reported elsewhere in the occupied West Bank, including:

  • Israeli forces have stormed the city of Nablus and the nearby Balata refugee camp, where Palestinian fighters have targeted them with an explosive device
  • The new Askar refugee camp east of Nablus has been stormed
  • The town of ad-Dhahiriya, south of Hebron, was also stormed

Israeli police shoot motorist near occupied East Jerusalem

Israeli police said they shot and “neutralised” the driver of a vehicle in the Shu’fat refugee camp, north of occupied East Jerusalem. They said border police “fired warning shots” as they “felt their lives were in danger” and when the car continued to advance, they shot the driver.

No police were injured. The suspect’s condition is not currently known.

It’s the second such incident in the area in as many days, with another Palestinian man wounded in similar circumstances in the occupied West Bank town of Anata on Thursday.

UN says 13 Palestinians killed by Israeli troops in occupied West Bank

Israeli forces killed 13 Palestinians and injured 26 in just eight days across the occupied West Bank, while Israeli settlers launched 35 attacks causing injury to Palestinian people and damage to their property, the UN reports.

Five of the 13 people killed, one of whom was a child, were slain in a one-week period between October 29 and November 4, and a further eight were killed in a single day on November 5, when Israeli forces carried out four military operations in the West Bank’s Jenin, Tubas and Tulkarem.

All the victims were shot by Israeli forces, killed in air strikes or “other lethal war-like tactics”, the UN said.

Israeli soldiers also hindered the Palestine Red Crescent Society from reaching one of their victims who was “left bleeding for nearly an hour” and was one of four to die in an Israeli raid.

Israeli settler attacks in the occupied West Bank

A number of Israeli settler attacks took place in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian news agency Wafa reports:

  • Settlers cut down about 70 olive, grape, and almond trees owned by Palestinian residents in the town of Nahalin, west of Bethlehem. Israeli forces and settlers have recently escalated their attacks on Nahalin.
  • Settlers attacked Palestinian olive-pickers in the village of Deir Jarir, east of Ramallah. Since the beginning of the olive harvest season, Palestinian farmers have been subjected to near-daily attacks.
  • Israeli settlers placed a caravan on Palestinian land in the village of Jalud to the south of Nablus, in the northern part of the occupied West Bank, in an apparent prelude to taking over the land.

Not disagreeing, but Macabi hooligans traveled to Amsterdam and started tearing down Palestinian flags, damaging people's property and setting off fireworks on Dam square. Provoking this despicable reaction.

Video footage on social media shows Israeli soccer fans chanting against Arabs and Palestinians in Amsterdam, pointing to high tensions and unrest prior to the nighttime attacks.

Pro-Palestinan activists have claimed that the Maccabi Tel Aviv fans were the first to engage in harassment and violence, saying they assaulted Arabs in the city and vandalized Palestinian flags.

Israeli fans could be heard chanting “We’ll fuck the Arabs,” and “Fuck you Palestine” in video footage circulating on social media, although it was not immediately clear when the footage had been captured.

Soccer hooligans have always been disgusting savage humans. Soccer matches in Europe regularly led to riots, violence in the streets, destruction of property, all accompanied by racist chants.

Rhetoric in Amsterdam clashes anti-migration, anti-Islam

Amsterdam’s mayor called the clashes a pitch-black day for the city, saying that the pro-Jewish reputation of the city was being tarnished.

The clashes were the result of a buildup in tensions over a few days, with hundreds of Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters holding a very vocal rally in the main square before the incident, waving Israeli flags and taking down a Palestinian flag.

But the issue is sensitive here, because most of the Jews who were living here in the 1940s were deported to Nazi concentration camps.

Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema told Al Jazeera that the government was prepared for protests and tensions, but “what happened last night had nothing to do with protest or demonstration, it was crime”.

Halsema described the riots as anti-Semitic and the same rhetoric came from the Geert Wilders’s governing right-wing populist Party for Freedom, which also talked about the possible deportation of the people who were involved in the riots.

So the rhetoric is very much going towards anti-migration and anti-Islam, and while we have been hearing from the far right for many decades, this is now coming from the government.

So the Maccabi soccer hooligans instigated the riots, but those reacting need to be deported?
They need to be charged with civil unrest, attempted assault, not pushed onto another country to deal with it.

Meanwhile the pushback against the soccer hooligans is painted as anti-semitism? Described as pogroms, really?
The hooligans that started this should be arrested, checked if they served in the IDF then send to the ICC for complicity in war crimes, not rescued by Israeli planes. The world upside down.

Bad form from the Dutch police as well. The soccer stadium isn't anywhere near the center. It's in Amsterdam South-East with all the facilities there to keep soccer fans apart and prevent this from happening. Why were they allowed to cause riots on Dam Square.

And why has Fifa still not banned Israel from participating.

On 3 October 2024, FIFA again delayed the decision of suspension, citing that they will first investigate the allegations of discrimination raised by the Palestine Football Association.

Anyway, the Amsterdam Jews (Ajax which I don't know if there are actual Jews in the team, it shouldn't matter anyway) had a resounding victory 5-0 against the well known racist Maccabi club. And the fans continued on at 'home'
