Lebanon says 1,873 have been killed since October 8

Lebanon’s Disaster Risk Management Unit has announced that 1,873 people have been killed and 9,134 wounded as a result of Israeli attacks in the country since October 8 last year.

“The number of displaced persons from areas exposed to Israeli aggression has exceeded one million, including 155,600 registered in shelters,” it said in its report.

Israel issues warning on travel in vehicles amid ‘heavy fighting in south’ Lebanon

The Israeli military has warned people to not travel in vehicles from north of the Litani River in southern Lebanon to the area south of the river.

Heavy fighting is taking place between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters in the south of Lebanon, the military said, and accused the Lebanese armed group of “exploiting the civilian environment and civilians as human shields to launch their attacks”.

In the interests of “personal safety”, the Israeli military’s Arabic language spokesman Avichay Adraee said people should not travel by vehicle in the designated area. Israeli forces “will disrupt the movements of Hezbollah elements and prevent them from carrying out their attacks,” Adraee said in a post on social media.

“This warning is in effect until further notice,” he said.

Infantry, armoured units to join ground operation in Lebanon: Israeli army

The Israeli military announced the 36th Division and additional forces are joining the ground offensive in southern Lebanon.

The addition of infantry and armoured troops from the 36th Division – including the Golani Brigade, the 188th Armoured Brigade, and 6th Infantry Brigade – suggests the operation has moved beyond limited commando raids.

The army on Tuesday announced a “limited, localised and targeted” ground assault against Hezbollah. The military has said the ground invasion is largely aimed at destroying tunnels and other infrastructure on the border.

Israeli army orders residents to evacuate south Lebanon villages

The Arabic language spokesman of the Israeli army, Avichay Adraee, has issued orders for people in 24 southern Lebanon villages to “evacuate their homes immediately”.

“Anyone who is near Hezbollah elements, installations, and combat equipment is putting his life at risk. Any house used by Hezbollah for its military needs is expected to be targeted,” he said in a post on X.

Israel again targets Lebanon’s capital

The latest attack took place after a night of repeated air raids on Beirut’s densely populated southern areas.

“Israeli aircraft targeted the southern suburbs with a strike,” Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported. Smoke could be seen rising from the blast scene.

Israel’s intensified air campaign against Hezbollah has upended the country. More than 1,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since September 17, nearly one-quarter women and children, according to the Health Ministry.

Hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes, sleeping on beaches and streets.

Hezbollah claims large missile barrage to Israel’s Haifa city

The Lebanese armed group says it targeted areas north of the Israeli port city with a large missile salvo.

No immediate reports of casualties or damage were available. We will bring you more shortly.

Hezbollah carries out several attacks against Israeli forces near the border

We’ve had three major Hezbollah attacks today. One was in the town of Odaisseh, which will be seen as a victory for Hezbollah.

Israeli forces came into Lebanese territory but were repelled in ground fighting. It was an ambush that forced the Israelis back. This particular town is where some of the fiercest artillery bombardment and air attacks took place after Israel announced its ground offensive.

Hezbollah also bombed the Shtula settlement, where Israeli forces are staging on the border, and hit a large infantry force in the Misgav Am settlement with missiles and artillery.

Hezbollah is still able to fight back and it’s looking to draw Israeli forces on the ground so it can ambush them. It has the upper hand in guerrilla and insurgency tactics. This is something Hezbollah is very good at.

Two Israeli soldiers killed, 18 wounded in Hezbollah ambush

Israeli media are now reporting two Israeli soldiers have been killed and 18 others wounded in clashes with Hezbollah fighters this morning on the border with Lebanon near the town of Odaisseh.

These were really the first face-to-face clashes since Israel announced its ground offensive on Tuesday.

Israel knows a ground invasion against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon is a very different challenge than facing Hamas in Gaza. Hezbollah is a formidable enemy that has trained for this, and has battle-hardened soldiers who fought for many years in Syria.

Hezbollah says clashes ongoing with Israeli troops near border

The Lebanese group says fighting is ongoing with Israeli forces infiltrating the town of Maroun al-Ras from its eastern side. Hezbollah said its fighters had “inflicted several casualties among them”.

Hezbollah says it can push back Israel, has sufficient resources

The head of Hezbollah’s media office, Mohammad Afif, says the group has enough fighters, weapons and ammunition to push back Israel. He was speaking to reporters in an area hit by Israeli raids in southern Lebanon.

“We assure you, the enemy, that this is only the first round,” Afif told reporters in southern Lebanon, adding that the group was ready to “sacrifice our blood and soul for our homeland by the grace of God”.

“What happened in … Maroun al-Ras and other areas, including Odaisseh, was nothing but the tip of the iceberg,” he added. Moreover, Afif said Israel’s air superiority will “turn into losses on the ground”.

Israeli forces crossed ‘Blue Line’: Lebanon army

The Lebanese army says Israeli forces briefly crossed into its territory before withdrawing.

“An Israeli enemy force breached the Blue Line approximately 400 metres into Lebanese territory in the areas of Khirbet Yaroun and Odaisseh, then withdrew after a short period,” the army said on X.

The Blue Line separates Lebanon from Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Israeli military quiet on reported soldier deaths

It is clear there was a deadly incident with Israeli soldiers involving Hezbollah. We understand there are ongoing battles since morning.

There is an Israeli military gag order in place, meaning details are not made public. This is how Israel operates. It informs the family members of the dead soldiers. Then at some point, maybe later in the day, we will get the details.

What we are seeing are videos posted on social media since this morning of helicopters evacuating soldiers. They were flown close to Haifa in northern Israel where many ambulances were waiting.

At the same time, three hospitals in that area had been put on standby.

Israel announces first death of soldier after Lebanon ground offensive

The Israeli army has announced its first combat death since launching ground operations in southern Lebanon this week. It said in a statement that a 22-year-old in a commando brigade was killed.

The Lebanese army says one of its soldiers has been wounded in an Israeli drone attack. In a statement, it said the soldier was injured as an army unit worked to open a road at the entrance to the southern Lebanese town of Kawkaba.

Hezbollah claims attack on Israeli soldiers

Hezbollah has issued a statement saying its fighters detonated an explosive device that killed and wounded members of the Israeli army trying to circumvent the village of Yaroun in southern Lebanon.

There was no immediate statement by the Israeli army.

Fires in Middle East becoming an inferno: UN chief

Antonio Guterres has told the UN Security Council that “the raging fires in the Middle East are fast becoming an inferno.”

Guterres said that UNIFIL peacekeepers remain in position despite a request by Israel for the multi-national peacekeeping force to relocate. He also stressed that the safety and security of all UN personnel must be ensured.

He added that it is absolutely essential to avoid an all-out war in Lebanon – something that would have profound and devastating consequences.

Guterres has also condemned Iran’s missile attack on Israel – which earlier designated the UN chief as persona non-grata – telling the Security Council the “deadly cycle of tit-for-tat violence must stop.”

“Time is running out,” he said.

The UN head also said it was time for “hostilities” to end in Lebanon and for a ceasefire in Gaza, accompanied by a release of captives and the delivery of aid to Palestinians.

Houthis fire rocket barrage at Israel

Yemen’s Houthi militia says it targeted military posts deep inside Israel with three-winged Quds-5 rockets. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The group’s military spokesperson Yahya Saree said continued US and UK support for Israel puts interests of these two countries “under fire”.

Houthis claim ‘successful’ rocket strikes on Israel

Earlier we reported Yemen’s Houthis saying they fired projectiles “deep inside” Israel “in support of both the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples”. No confirmation from Israeli officials has been released, however.

“The missiles successfully hit their targets,” said Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree in a statement.

Saree “commended” Iran on its missile barrage launched against Israel on Tuesday. “We will not hesitate to widen our operations against the Israeli enemy or those backing them until the war on Gaza and Lebanon is halted and siege laid to Gaza is lifted.”

Israeli army says soldier ‘seriously injured’ in Jaffa shooting

The military has said the soldier was transferred to the hospital.

As we reported earlier, Israeli police said that at least seven people were killed and 15 others were injured in the shooting in Jaffa, near Tel Aviv.

Death toll from Tel Aviv attack rises to 7

The number of dead from a shooting and stabbing attack in Tel Aviv rose to seven after one of the victims succumbed to his wounds overnight.

“The injured person came to us in a critical condition, suffering from multi-system damage, and after doctors fought for his life, they had to pronounce him dead a short while ago,” a statement from Tel Aviv’s Ichilov medical centre said.

On Tuesday, Israeli police said six people were killed and 17 others wounded in the attack near the light rail station in Jaffa. Police said the two assailants in their 20s were residents of the occupied West Bank. One of the attackers was shot dead and the other was seriously wounded.

Israeli military bombs home in Khan Younis, killing at least 4: Report

The Wafa news agency is reporting that Israeli fighter jets bombed the family home of journalist Ahmed al-Zard southeast of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, killing his brother, uncle and two cousins.

Al-Zard, who was seriously injured in the attack along with his mother and another brother, is currently in hospital, Wafa said. Others remain trapped under the rubble of the destroyed home.

Israeli forces fired on anyone approaching the house, initially preventing ambulance crews from reaching the wounded, Wafa added.

Israeli military announces attack on third school in Gaza

The Israeli military says it bombed a school in central Gaza that it alleged was being used as a Hamas “command and control complex”.

The exact location of the school, which it named only as “Brig High School”, was not immediately clear. The army also did not provide any evidence to back up its claim that the school was being used by the Palestinian group.

It was not immediately clear if the attack resulted in any casualties.

This is the third attack by the Israeli military on schools across Gaza in the past few hours, after earlier assaults on the al-Amal Institute for Orphans and the Muscat School, both in Gaza City, killed at least nine people and injured dozens more.

Both facilities were serving as shelters for displaced Palestinians.

Israeli attacks Gaza shelters as about 90 percent of residents displaced

As we’ve been reporting over the past few hours, the Israeli military has attacked two schools in Gaza City housing displaced Palestinians, killing at least nine people and injuring dozens more.

Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip since last October has displaced an estimated 1.9 million Palestinians – about 90 percent of the besieged enclave’s population, according to the UN humanitarian affairs office (OCHA).

Many have experienced multiple forced displacements as a result of persistent Israeli relocation orders and attacks.

In mid-September, the UN said 55 ongoing mass evacuation orders across Gaza covered more than 85 percent of the Palestinian territory.

Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said this week that “repeated displacements are also separating families”, as well as “eroding social protection systems, particularly for women and children”.

As the rainy season approaches, already dire living conditions in Gaza will deteriorate further, OCHA also warned, putting hundreds of thousands of displaced people at heightened risk of additional displacement and health hazards.

Dozens of Palestinians killed, wounded in south Gaza

The bodies of more than 30 people – including women and children – were recovered after Israeli forces withdrew from Khan Younis following a ground assault that lasted for several hours.

Saleh al-Hams, head of the nursing department at the European Gaza Hospital, said dozens of dead and wounded people were brought to his facility and Nasser Hospital from 3am (00:00 GMT).

Some of the injured are in critical condition, he said. Israeli forces carried out heavy air strikes as ground troops staged incursions into three neighbourhoods in Khan Younis, Gaza’s second-largest city.

As Israel steps up Gaza attacks, parents of killed children ‘crying hearts out’

Events in Gaza after the Iranian missile attack were quite contrary to expectations, meaning a letup or a slowing down in the Israeli attacks.

The Israeli military carried out deadly attacks across the territory. In fact, the largest number of deaths compared with the past days happened at a time when the Israeli military announced an emergency as Iran was retaliating to it.

The attacks included a limited ground incursion of the southern part of Khan Younis where the army destroyed a group of residential buildings.

At least 12 members of a family were killed. Civil defence members told us that paramedics were not allowed to get to the bombed site to look for survivors. It was not until five hours later they were able to remove the bodies.

The Israeli military also attacked a tent inside an evacuation centre in western Khan Younis, killing five people from one family, including children.

I’ve been at al-Aqsa Hospital since the early hours of the morning and have seen multiple funerals for the people who were killed overnight – the same tragic scenes of fathers and mothers crying their hearts out over the bodies of their children who were killed.

One woman said they were inside the tent sleeping when the attack happened and caused severe bleeding in her children who were pronounced dead later on.

At the western part of Nuseirat refugee camp, the Israeli military also carried out attacks using heavy artillery against people who were approaching the Nitzarim junction in an attempt to cross to the northern part. They were met with heavy power, machineguns and artillery that killed a large number of people, some of whom were transferred to al-Aqsa Hospital.

Further north in the Strip, more schools and residential buildings were attacked.

Gaza death toll rises

At least 41,689 people have been killed and 96,625 wounded in Israeli military attacks on Gaza since October 7, the enclave’s Health Ministry says. Of those, 51 Palestinians were killed and 82 wounded in the latest 24-hour reporting period, the ministry added.

Dozens killed across Gaza: Medical sources

Overnight and early morning Israeli attacks have killed at least 79 people across the Gaza Strip, medical sources told Al Jazeera. This includes at least 53 Palestinians killed in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, they said.

France calls for permanent ceasefire in Gaza after dozens killed

The French Foreign Ministry “strongly” condemned the latest Israeli attacks that killed dozens of civilians including on an orphanage and school in northern Gaza and a family home in the southern city of Khan Younis.

“For several weeks, civilian infrastructure where populations find refuge has been repeatedly targeted by the Israeli army,” it said.

“In the face of need for absolute emergency in Gaza, France reiterates its call for the unconditional and immediate release of all hostages and for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, which must allow the massive and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.”

Medical sources tell Al Jazeera at least 79 people were killed in the Strip overnight and early morning.

Latest on deadly Israeli attacks on Gaza

People arriving at al-Awda Hospital in northern Gaza, Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis and Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah in Gaza are reported to have critical injuries, with some taken to operating rooms and intensive care units.

Many were unable to reach a health facility and were pronounced dead. The lack of medical supplies also makes it very hard for doctors to save lives.

We have confirmation from Nasser Hospital that 19 people from the same family in Khan Younis were killed in Israeli attacks, seven more than what was previously reported.

In central Gaza, the Israeli military attacked tent sites and evacuation centres, killing 22 people. Meanwhile, in the north, Israeli forces targeted residential buildings.

No respite as Israel intensifies deadly Gaza attacks

After the Iranian retaliation, the Israeli army has been ramping up attacks on the Gaza Strip. There is a very high rate of deaths and casualties among civilians in the central, northern and central parts of the Strip.

Right now, ambulances are rushing to Bureij refugee camp in order to bring to the hospital victims after a residential house there was targeted. At least three Palestinians have been confirmed killed so far.

In the south, the city of Khan Younis has come under assault. There was a limited ground incursion that was accompanied by intense artillery shelling on residential homes. Medical sources confirmed to Al Jazeera that more than 50 Palestinians have been killed just in Khan Younis since yesterday evening.

In the central areas of Gaza, at least 25 Palestinians were killed, and in the north of the Strip, at least 30 Palestinians were confirmed killed.

A particularly bloody attack also took place at Nuseirat where a UN-run evacuation centre was targeted, with at least three confirmed killed and a number of wounded taken to hospital.

There have been attacks on evacuation centres, and even institutes that have been allocated to provide essential care for Palestinian orphans.

Overall, there’s been a very clear escalation by the Israeli military inside Gaza, which continues until now with no respite.

Palestinian killed by shrapnel of downed Iranian missile is buried: Report

A 38-year-old Palestinian from Gaza who was killed in Iran’s missile attack against Israel was buried earlier today, Reuters reports.

Sameh Khader al-Asali had been staying in a Palestinian security forces compound in the occupied West Bank when he was killed by falling missile debris during Tuesday’s attack.

Security forces personnel carried the body draped in the red, green, white and black Palestinian flag. The crowd of about 200 mourners included locals and fellow Palestinians staying in Jericho.

A large part of the rocket lay on the ground where it fell outside the compound.

About 700 workers from Gaza have been staying in Jericho, in the Jordan Valley, since the start of the Israeli war in the besieged coastal enclave almost a year ago. Israeli authorities cancelled their permits, which had allowed them to work inside Israel, after October 7, 2023, and many were arrested and taken to the occupied West Bank.

Israel combat losses in Lebanon rise to eight: Israeli army

The Israeli military says its combat losses in southern Lebanon increased to eight as it clashed with Hezbollah fighters after crossing the border to target the group’s positions.

“The IDF (Israeli army) announced that seven more soldiers have fallen,” it said in a statement after announcing the death of a first soldier in Lebanon earlier in the day.

Iran missiles struck inside Israel air bases, no damage: Israeli forces

Israel’s military says several missiles fired by Iran hit inside Israeli air force bases but did not cause any casualties or damage without specifying which bases.

“During the Iranian attack yesterday [Tuesday], several missiles fell within Israeli air force bases. No offensive infrastructure or capabilities located on IAF [Israel Air Force] bases were damaged,” the military said, adding that no casualties or damage to aircraft were reported.

In Israel, a slight shift from the euphoria after Nasrallah’s killing

Meron Rapoport, an Israeli investigative journalist, says there has been a slight shift in the Israeli public’s mood after the Iranian missile attack.

Speaking to Al Jazeera from Tel Aviv, he said there are “cracks” in the collective euphoria felt following the assassination of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah last week.

“Yes, there were no casualties in Israeli cities and towns in the Iranian attack, but now the [Israeli army] confirms that military installations were hit, and the fact that we are now hearing from Lebanon that a soldier was killed, I think the mood is changing a little bit,” he said.

Rapoport added that people in Israel are “confused” and oscillating between wanting to seek revenge and hit back at Iran, but also feeling apprehensive about a possible regional war.

“A war with Iran is new and people are concerned. So the feeling is a little bit contradictory,” he said.
