As Israel steps up Gaza attacks, parents of killed children ‘crying hearts out’

Events in Gaza after the Iranian missile attack were quite contrary to expectations, meaning a letup or a slowing down in the Israeli attacks.

The Israeli military carried out deadly attacks across the territory. In fact, the largest number of deaths compared with the past days happened at a time when the Israeli military announced an emergency as Iran was retaliating to it.

The attacks included a limited ground incursion of the southern part of Khan Younis where the army destroyed a group of residential buildings.

At least 12 members of a family were killed. Civil defence members told us that paramedics were not allowed to get to the bombed site to look for survivors. It was not until five hours later they were able to remove the bodies.

The Israeli military also attacked a tent inside an evacuation centre in western Khan Younis, killing five people from one family, including children.

I’ve been at al-Aqsa Hospital since the early hours of the morning and have seen multiple funerals for the people who were killed overnight – the same tragic scenes of fathers and mothers crying their hearts out over the bodies of their children who were killed.

One woman said they were inside the tent sleeping when the attack happened and caused severe bleeding in her children who were pronounced dead later on.

At the western part of Nuseirat refugee camp, the Israeli military also carried out attacks using heavy artillery against people who were approaching the Nitzarim junction in an attempt to cross to the northern part. They were met with heavy power, machineguns and artillery that killed a large number of people, some of whom were transferred to al-Aqsa Hospital.

Further north in the Strip, more schools and residential buildings were attacked.

Gaza death toll rises

At least 41,689 people have been killed and 96,625 wounded in Israeli military attacks on Gaza since October 7, the enclave’s Health Ministry says. Of those, 51 Palestinians were killed and 82 wounded in the latest 24-hour reporting period, the ministry added.

Dozens killed across Gaza: Medical sources

Overnight and early morning Israeli attacks have killed at least 79 people across the Gaza Strip, medical sources told Al Jazeera. This includes at least 53 Palestinians killed in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, they said.

France calls for permanent ceasefire in Gaza after dozens killed

The French Foreign Ministry “strongly” condemned the latest Israeli attacks that killed dozens of civilians including on an orphanage and school in northern Gaza and a family home in the southern city of Khan Younis.

“For several weeks, civilian infrastructure where populations find refuge has been repeatedly targeted by the Israeli army,” it said.

“In the face of need for absolute emergency in Gaza, France reiterates its call for the unconditional and immediate release of all hostages and for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, which must allow the massive and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.”

Medical sources tell Al Jazeera at least 79 people were killed in the Strip overnight and early morning.
