Israeli minister calls war ‘an enormous blessing for Israel’

Minister Ze’ev Elkin has said discussions about the war should not focus on when it will end, but on “how we can extend and deepen the damage”.

“Every day of the campaign is an enormous blessing for the State of Israel,” said Elkin in comments carried by Israeli Army Radio.

Yesterday, Defence Minister Israel Katz said the Israeli military had authorisation to target any senior Iranian officials in their sights.

The war has killed at least 1,444 people in Iran, 968 in Lebanon and at least 17 people in Israel.

Falling shrapnel near Hebron kills Palestinian teenager, two women

The Palestinian Wafa news agency has named the victims killed by falling shrapnel near Hebron in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday night. They were Mays Ghazi Musalameh, 17, Sahera Rizq Musalameh, 50, and Amal Subhi Abdel Karim Mutawa “Musalameh”, 36.

Thirteen women were also injured when parts of the projectile fired from Iran fell on the salon, which was operating from a metal caravan next to a house, according to Wafa.

Unlike in Israel, where many people have access to fortified shelters and protection from the Israeli military’s defence system, Palestinian residents in the occupied West Bank often live in crowded and makeshift homes, offering little safety during aerial attacks.

People gather for funeral of three Palestinians killed by missile debris

People here are saying this was a tragedy and there’s nothing they can do about it. The Palestinian civil defence team is here to conduct more searches and find out more information about the attack and the nature of it.

People say the [three female victims], who were at a nail salon, were just trying to prepare for Eid al-Fitr, trying to have a normal day here in the occupied West Bank, despite the abnormality that Palestinians face as they see these rockets being fired into Israel and sometimes also into the occupied West Bank.

They have no shelters and no guidance on what to do or where to go. And they have no aerial defence systems. In fact, Israel’s aerial defence systems are around Palestinian villages, which makes them more susceptible to attacks.

Fourth Palestinian woman dies in occupied West Bank from Iranian missile attack

Another Palestinian woman has died from shrapnel wounds sustained when an Iranian missile attack sent debris towards a nail salon in the occupied West Bank late on Wednesday, bringing the total death toll from the incident to four.

The woman, 32-year-old Samir Masalmeh, was six months pregnant, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. A girl who was severely injured in the blast is hospitalised in stable condition, the ministry added.

Palestinian authorities could not confirm whether the shrapnel that caused the casualties came from an Iranian missile or an Israeli interceptor used to shoot it down.

‘Crisis after crisis’ in Lebanon

There has been crisis after crisis in a country where the economy has all but collapsed and the currency has no value.

More than a million people have been displaced [in Lebanon] by the latest confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah. Many of them live out in the open, in parking lots, in tents. Some of them are sleeping in their cars. It’s cold and raining. They find anything that they can burn just to keep warm.

The government is really struggling. There are not enough shelters to house all these people. There’s not enough money to give them proper meals. These people didn’t just leave their homes; they also left their businesses and livelihoods. For many of them, this is the second time they’ve been displaced in two years. The last confrontation was in late 2024, and many people have still not recovered from that war.

The United Nations is struggling as well. They are not getting enough funds to meet the needs [of people in Lebanon]. There is a global shortfall in funding for humanitarian aid. The UN secretary-general was here last week, appealing for $300m. So far, only a third has been pledged.

So the situation is only worsening. There is a lot of suffering and uncertainty. People don’t know where this conflict is heading.

Syria’s al-Sharaa says seeking to shield country from conflict

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has said he is working to keep his country away from the Middle East war, state media SANA reported.

In a speech delivered after the Eid al-Fitr prayer in the presidential palace in Damascus, al-Sharaa said: “It is important to remember that Syria has always been an arena of conflict and strife during the past 15 years and before that, but today it is in harmony with all neighbouring countries regionally and internationally.

“What is happening now is a major and rare event in history that we haven’t witnessed since World War II. We are carefully calculating our steps and working to keep Syria away from any conflict, so that it can maintain its path of development and reconstruction,” the president added.

Independent journalist Abby Martin has spent decades covering American wars of aggression, and has witnessed first hand how the corporate media 'manufactures consent' for these wars. The US-Israel assault on Iran is no different.

Speaking to Declassified editor Phil Miller, they discuss the dismal corporate media coverage in the UK and US, how no lessons have been learnt from the Gaza genocide, and why Keir Starmer can't stand up to Donald Trump over Iran.

Abby Martin was visiting London for a screening of her new documentary Earth's Greatest Enemy, which explores the environmental impact of the US military.

Also talks about how the genocide in Gaza is viewed in Israel with a disturbing conclusion:

"What's most disturbing is when you let a state have impunity and when they're that full of hatred the limitations are endless. And as we've seen, they will not stop. They will not stop. The levels continue to stoop lower and lower of what they're getting away with and what they're capable of doing. And the US will back them every step of the way.

But every single poll since this started has shown overwhelming support by Israeli Jews uh for the genocide, for the starvation campaign, caging millions of people, depriving them of basic human rights, electricity. I mean, the anti-Muslim bigotry that makes this rational and justified in the eyes of the Western world is really, really horrific and despicable.

Israeli society is too far gone. And that's why BDS is paramount. It's sonecessary that we start to isolate this pariah country, the settler colonial country, and um, and really try to shame anyone who's participating in it because they cannot help themselves at this point. There is no left-wing faction within Israeli society who's going to fix this problem."

Israeli air strikes on Gaza kill four Palestinians

Strikes intensify across Gaza as health officials say 680 Palestinians have been killed since October’s ‘ceasefire’.

An aerial view of damage to homes following Israeli air strikes in Khan Younis, Gaza

Israeli air strikes have killed four people across the Gaza Strip, Palestinian officials said, as Israel continues its genocidal war against Palestinians in the besieged territory despite a United States-brokered “ceasefire”.

Three of those killed were members of the local police. They died when an Israeli air strike hit a vehicle in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza on Sunday. Ten others were wounded in the attack, medics said.

Earlier, a separate strike in the Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood of northern Gaza killed a senior figure from an armed group linked to Fatah. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military about the incidents.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 680 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since a “ceasefire” took effect in October. Israel has reported four soldiers killed in the same period.

On Thursday, drone strikes in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighbourhood killed at least three Palestinians, wounding others.

"We've Been in Famine for Months": Life in Post-Ceasefire Gaza

https://www.thinkglobalhealth.org/article/weve-been-in-famine-for-months-life-in-post-ceasefire-gaza

As international attention shifted to the war with Iran, in the background, Israel moved to cut off the Gaza Strip. On February 28, the same day the first strikes hit Iran, Israeli officials announced that they were closing every crossing and aid corridor into the Palestinian territory.

As of March 19, all of those crossings except one—Kerem Shalom—remain closed, which humanitarian workers say has reduced aid flows to a trickle. Life in Gaza has never regained its footing since October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants based in the enclave launched an attack that killed more than 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals, mostly civilians, and took 251 hostages.

The Israeli response and vow to eliminate Hamas has devastated living areas in Gaza. The 1.8 million people living there today confront renewed aid shortages, skyrocketing prices, and persistent dangers. Some Palestinians worry that the latest suffocation will push Gaza back into the famine that clutched the enclave after Israel blocked aid for eleven weeks last year.
