Israel urges Canada’s PM to reconsider call for Netanyahu’s arrest

The Israeli government has called on Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney to rethink his pledge to honour an international arrest warrant for Netanyahu if he visits the country.

“We believe that Prime Minister Carney should, of course, reconsider this and welcome Prime Minister Netanyahu, the leader of the only Jewish state and democratic country in the Middle East, to Canada,” an Israeli government spokesperson said.

On Thursday, Carney said he would maintain his predecessor Justin Trudeau’s position and honour the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza if he ever came to Canada.

No war criminals, we do not want Netanyahu here.

World Court to issue advisory opinion on NGOs in Palestine

The International Court of Justice will deliver an advisory opinion on Wednesday on Israel’s obligations regarding the presence and activities of the United Nations, other international organisations, and third states in the occupied Palestinian territory.

The ruling comes at a critical moment. Israel banned UNRWA from operating in its territory in January, effectively crippling the agency’s work in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Critic lambasts Israel for ongoing starvation policy in Gaza

Eleven days after signing the ceasefire deal, Israel has still failed to provide Palestinians in war-battered Gaza to full access to desperately needed humanitarian aid.

Former UN agency for Palestinian refugees spokesperson Chris Gunness spoke to AJ+ about the conditions of the ceasefire, what it says about aid, and what that means for starving and thirsty Palestinians on the ground.

More on US-led ‘coordination centre’ in Israel

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has released a statement offering more details on the work that will be carried out at the so-called Civil-Military Coordination Centre in southern Israel. Among other things, it says the centre will:

  • “Support stabilization efforts” in Gaza.
  • Facilitate the transfer of “humanitarian, logistical and security assistance” from international counterparts to the Palestinian enclave.
  • Monitor ceasefire implementation, including via “an operations floor that allows staff to assess real-time developments in Gaza”.

CENTCOM reiterated that US military personnel will not deploy to Gaza, adding they will, however, “integrate representatives from partner nations, non-governmental organizations, international institutions, and the private sector as they arrive to the coordination center”.

‘Internal Israeli politics’ roiled by tough-talking Trump officials

We will hear a lot of positives on the US officials’ continued visit to Israel, which is expected. The messaging will continue to be the same: very flowery, very optimistic, promising the moon.

But really, the commentary in Israel is talking about very tough conversations. In fact, even before JD Vance arrived, Israeli media were talking about tough conversations that happened between Jared Kushner, Steve Witkoff and the Israeli prime minister – telling him the American administration is not going to accept Israel unilaterally breaking the ceasefire.

There is serious concern that is where things are headed, given internal Israeli politics. It’s not just Netanyahu’s far-right coalition. We even heard in the past 48 hours from members of the opposition, saying Israel should go back to war on Gaza, and even think about a renewed ground invasion in response to an incident that still is unclear and resulted in the death of two soldiers.

The American administration has its own intelligence on that, and it’s not listening to all the bravado that is coming out of Israel about the need to resume war. They want to talk end-game. They keep saying the war is over. Israel officially has not declared that this war and the other fronts are over.

Israel announces schedule for VP Vance’s Netanyahu meetings

The Israeli government’s media office has released a schedule for Thursday, when US Vice President JD Vance is expected to hold meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

  • 10am: Vance will be welcomed at the prime minister’s office in West Jerusalem, where they will meet privately. Photos will also be taken.
  • 11am: Vance and Netanyahu will hold a larger working meeting after.

Israeli media are reporting that Netanyahu will face significant pressure from the America First vice president to end the war on Gaza as outlined in President Trump’s Middle East peace plan.

Trump ‘playing much tougher with Israel’ than Biden did

Omar Rahman, a fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, says today’s remarks by senior US officials mirror the rhetoric heard during the administration of Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden, around Gaza ceasefires.

“Clearly, there are violations happening, especially from the Israeli side, and yet, [the Trump administration is] kind of pointing the finger at Hamas, warning Hamas … while treating the Israelis with kid gloves and not putting any of the attention or blame on Israel,” Rahman said.

In turn, that encourages Israel “to feel like they can violate [the deal] with impunity”.

But Rahman told Al Jazeera that, behind the scenes, the Trump administration is “playing much tougher with Israel” than the Biden administration did. “That’s the situation we’re in. We are hearing mixed messaging, and I do think that Netanyahu is doing what he can to derail things,” he added.

Yeah no doubt. Biden would not have been able to stop Israel on Sunday. And today when the IDF ran into an IED, wounding 2 soldiers, they now said they would investigate when the IED was put there (likely before the ceasefire) instead of starting to bomb again.

Trump smells money and seems hell bent on getting his son in law, Kushner, into (re)construction in Gaza.

That's what Trump and Kushner see, a profitable construction zone along the Mediterranean coast.

Just one 'little' problem in the way

UN official warns of widespread explosive ordnance threat in Gaza

Luke David Irving, the head of the UN’s Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in the occupied Palestinian territory, says people in Gaza face an “incredibly high” threat from explosive ordnance littering the enclave.

Irving noted that five Palestinian children were wounded last week by such weapons buried in the rubble of Israel’s bombardment. That is just one of hundreds of such reports, he said.

“As of today, 328 victims of explosive ordnance, including injuries and deaths, have been reported to UNMAS since October 2023,” Irving told reporters during a briefing at UN headquarters in New York City.

“We expect that this figure is significantly underreported. Unfortunately, we can estimate that many more people have been injured or killed by ordnance littering Gaza over the past two years.”

UNMAS has been able to identify at least 560 explosive ordnances in Gaza in areas the agency has been able to access. “However, we will not know the full extent of the contamination in Gaza until and unless a comprehensive survey can take place,” Irving said.

Main events on October 21st

  • Hamas has released the bodies of two more Israeli captives from Gaza as part of the US-brokered ceasefire deal.
  • Senior US officials, including Vice President JD Vance, have put a positive spin on the deal’s implementation despite repeated violations, telling reporters during a visit to Israel that things are “exceeding” expectations so far.
  • Hamas has condemned Israel’s failure to reopen the critical Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt, saying its continued closure is blocking injured and sick Palestinians from getting medical care, as well as deliveries of humanitarian aid.
  • Israeli military and settler violence has continued across the occupied West Bank, with Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin decrying it as a “systematic campaign of displacement and extermination”.
  • Israel’s national security adviser, Tzachi Hanegbi, said he was fired by Benjamin Netanyahu over growing divisions between the two over Israel’s war on Gaza.

Settlers attack Palestinian village overnight: Report

Israeli forces and settlers have carried out several overnight raids and assaults in the occupied West Bank. According to the Wafa news agency:

  • A group of settlers attacked the Palestinian village of Burqa, near Ramallah.
  • Israeli troops arrested a young man in Qalqilya city after searching his house.
  • Israeli troops raided several houses in villages near Bethlehem.

Israeli forces block Palestinian farmers from harvesting olives in occupied West Bank

Israeli forces have prevented Palestinian farmers from entering their lands to harvest olives in Khirbet Yanun, south of Nablus, our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic are reporting. The incident comes just days after an Israeli settler assaulted a Palestinian woman while she was harvesting olives in the occupied West Bank town of Turmus Aya.

More raids, arrests in occupied West Bank

Israeli forces have carried out a new wave of raids across the occupied West Bank, rounding up at least 22 Palestinians this morning, according to Palestine’s Wafa news agency. They detained 16 people, including a child, across Hebron governorate, while apprehending five more in Nablus and the nearby Balata camp, reported Wafa.

Israeli forces also assaulted two people riding a motorcycle in Beit Hanina, a Palestinian neighbourhood in East Jerusalem, and arrested one of them, said Wafa.

Israel arrests 45 people in latest West Bank raids: Prisoner group

Israeli forces have detained 45 people, including a child and several former prisoners, in raids since last night, reports the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society.

The majority of the arrests took place in Hebron governorate, while the rest were in the governorates of Nablus, Ramallah, Qalqilya and Tulkarem, according to the group.

While making the arrests, Israeli forces vandalised homes and repeatedly assaulted detainees and their relatives, it added.

UNRWA official says ‘future of Gaza and West Bank are one’

Roland Friedrich, director of UNRWA Affairs in the occupied West Bank, has warned of escalating settler violence and settlement expansion in the West Bank amid the Gaza ceasefire.

“A drawdown in Gaza should not become an opportunity to tighten the grip of occupation elsewhere,” said Friedrich, adding “the future of Gaza and West Bank are one.

“As fragile hope now emerges in Gaza, UNRWA stands ready to work with all parties to ensure a comprehensive outcome that can form the cornerstone of peace and stability for the entirety of the occupied Palestinian territory, and for the region, for generations to come,” he said.

Israel’s parliament advances West Bank annexation bill

An Israeli bill to annex the illegally occupied West Bank has cleared its first stage of approval in the Knesset.

Despite opposition from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, lawmakers voted 25-24 to advance the bill, according to Israeli media reports.

Most members of Netanyahu’s Likud Party abstained or failed to show up for the vote, but one member – Yuli Edelstein – defied the prime minister and cast the decisive vote in favour of the bill.

US President Trump previously stated he would not allow Israel to annex the occupied West Bank, a blatant violation of international law.

Jordan condemns Israel’s preliminary approval of West Bank annexation

Jordan has condemned the Israeli government’s preliminary approval of two draft laws to annex the occupied West Bank and legitimise sovereignty over an illegal settlement.

In a statement on X, the foreign ministry said the decision was a “blatant violation of international law” that undermines a two-state solution and the “inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination”.

“The Ministry’s official spokesperson, Fouad Al-Majali, affirmed the Kingdom’s absolute rejection and strong condemnation of any Israeli attempts to impose sovereignty over the occupied West Bank,” the statement read.

“Al-Majali warned against the continuation of Israel’s unilateral, illegitimate policies that violate international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, reiterating that all Israeli measures in the occupied West Bank and violations of Islamic and Christian holy sites in occupied Jerusalem are illegitimate and illegal,” it added.

The spokesperson called on the international community to “compel Israel to halt its dangerous escalation and illegitimate measures in the occupied West Bank”.

Israeli drone attack kills one in southern Lebanon

An Israeli drone-fired missile has killed a person on their motorcycle in the southern Lebanese town of Ain Qana, reports Lebanon’s National News Agency.

Israel’s military claims attack in Lebanon, says killed Hezbollah special forces member

The Israeli military has claimed a deadly attack that took place earlier today in southern Lebanon’s town of Ain Qana. It said the attack killed a platoon commander in Hezbollah’s Radwan special forces unit.

The targeted individual, Israel’s military said, had helped smuggle weapons into Lebanon and advanced plots against Israel, actions it said contravened the Lebanon ceasefire deal. The army did not offer any immediate proof of its claims.

As we’ve reported, Israel’s military has repeatedly carried out strikes in southern Lebanon despite the November ceasefire, saying it is targeting Hezbollah fighters.

They keep claiming to kill Hezbollah members as if that's some sort of justification.

Assassinations are illegal under war, and this is supposed to be a ceasefire.

Forensic teams uncover signs of torture, decomposition on bodies returned by Israel

So far, we understand that 54 bodies of Palestinians were recently handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross, which then facilitated their transfer to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

These bodies are scheduled to be buried today. The Health Ministry has also confirmed that, under the terms of the agreement, at least 165 bodies have been handed over by the ICRC.

Forensic teams have reported horrific conditions endured by these Palestinians. Some of the bodies show visible signs of torture, while others have arrived in a decomposed state. This raises serious questions about the circumstances of their deaths, as Israel has not provided further details regarding their ages, names or how they died.

At the moment, the Health Ministry is continuing ground preparations, and it is possible the burials will take place in the city of Deir el-Balah.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says newly received bodies have signs of ‘torture, beating’

In a statement, the ministry has confirmed it received remains of 30 more Palestinian detainees held by Israel, bringing the total number of bodies received since the ceasefire to 195.

The ministry said some of the bodies bore marks of “torture, beating, handcuffing and blindfolding”. It said its medical teams would continue to examine the bodies as per medical protocol to document their condition and deliver them to their families.

MSF urges countries to take in Palestinian patients needing care

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has urged world governments to take in Palestinians who cannot get the life-saving medical treatment they need in Gaza, where the health system has been decimated by Israel’s bombardment.

More than 15,000 patients are registered with the World Health Organization and awaiting medical evacuation, MSF medical adviser Dr Mohamed Abu Mughaisib said.

“More than 700 patients have died while they were waiting to be medically evacuated,” said Mughaisib.

That includes women, children and elderly people “who could be saved if they were treated in a proper hospital”, he noted.

What’s going on with aid to Gaza?

More than a week after the ceasefire, Palestinians in Gaza say they have seen no change in their lives as Israel continues to restrict aid deliveries. Only two Israeli-controlled crossings are open, while Rafah remains closed.

About 6,000 trucks of aid waiting to enter Gaza, says UNRWA

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, also known as UNRWA, says aid entering the Gaza Strip is a “drop in the ocean of what’s urgently needed”. “All crossings need to open. Aid needs to be unrestricted,” it said in a post on X.

“UNRWA has around 6,000 trucks worth of vital humanitarian supplies in Jordan and Egypt waiting to go in.”

One killed by Israeli army in Gaza City: Medical sources

One Palestinian was killed by Israeli forces in the Tuffah neighbourhood, a source at al-Ahli Hospital told Al Jazeera. Dozens of people have been killed by Israeli forces despite an ongoing ceasefire that came into effect on October 10.
