Forums - Nintendo - Can we talk about how well calculated the Switch's first year was?

Yeah.
I will admit the first 6 months or so were pretty light to me as a Wii U owner. Yeah, I know the Wii U had so many droughts, but the two biggest releases on Switch in the first few months were a cross-gen Zelda and an enhanced port of Mario Kart 8. I still haven't had interest in Splatoon 2 or Arms, so they didn't catch my attention back then.
But October onward really amped things up.
3D Mario, Stardew Valley, Skyrim, Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
Switch probably has the best first calendar year (its launch from March 2017 through the end of the year) and first overall year (March 2017 to March 2018). I'm struggling to think of any other game platforms with a better first year.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 122 million (was 105 million, then 115 million) Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

However, I think Splatoon 2 was to show the systems online capabilities, not local wireless functionality.

I think Splatoon 2 was to make the streets of Japan run red with the blood of millions of exploding heads and guarantee the console's success there one hundred times over.

I bet there's a prototype/build of a port or sequel to Splatoon on for the New 3DS that we never heard about, because Nintendo had to be frothing at the mouth to try to get the one Wii U breakout success into the hands of more of its fanbase at the time.

That was a great first year. You're right OP they did show off a variety of the systems features. And it had BotW one of the all time greatest games ever, in addition to Odyssey one of the all time best Mario and platformer games ever, plus Mario + Rabbids which was my biggest surprise great game of the year (though I didn't actually buy it until a year after it came out), in addition to other great games like Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart and more. Sooo good!

I had been waiting for Odyssey to come out to get the Switch, but then in July of that year when my sister-in-law told me she had actually found some Switches online that were available (remember it was impossible to find a Switch that whole year) and was gonna get one for my brother and wanted to know if she should order one for me I was like hell yes cuz who knows if I'm actually going to be able to find a system later in the year when Odyssey comes out.

I had actually stopped playing games in 2011, and Switch brought me back into gaming in 2017.

Let's take a look at the 2 consoles that have sold more than the Switch, the DS and the PS2.

First PS2.
It launched with 29 titles off the bat. The best & rememberable titles are:
TimeSplitters
Dark Souls
Elden Ring
Madden NFL 2001
Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore
SSX

And here are some of the top games that year:
Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy IX
Dragon Quest VII
Ridge Racer V
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

Second DS:
Mario 64 DS
Spider-Man 2
Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt
Golden Eye: Rouge Agent
Nintendogs
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Pheonix Wright: Ace Attorney

Looking back, I think each did a great job with what they produced in a year. (Mario Kart DS released after the year mark, and was the second best selling Nintendo game for 2005 behind Nintendogs).

Did they do as well as the Switch? I dont think they did. Nintendo pulled a broken year of games.

Lets hope they pull another broken year of games with the NG comes out.

Elden Ring on PS2 was amazing
