So far what I've gathered from this thread is that Mega Man is popular, but not nearly as popular as Mario.  Guybrush Threepwood, on the other hand, can actually give Mario some decent competition.  He's basically the PC version of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX2) aka Proto-MGS! Far better than the original game in every way.

Voted for Wing Commander... As that defined a genre.

Taking the baton from the already incredible Mario Bros 3, World kicked things into even higher gear with even more variety, even more secrets, an interconnected overworld, beautiful 16-bit graphics that still look nice, and gameplay that remains top notch more than 30 years later.
On a system that hosts the greatest lineup of original 2D games of all time, this one sits right near the very top.

LOL, if it makes you feel better, there are plenty others here who have gotten old too, including myself. 

Super Mario World its still one of the best platformers of all time and put the SNES on the map.

However, the runner up is The Secret of Monkey Island, which got significantly more votes than all other games that placed behind it.

Wing Commander, even years later it remained one of the greatest spachip combat experiences, and also had a great extensive cast and engaging plot to have you engaged all about the conflict against the kilrathi.

ActRaiser should have been in the other games worth mentioning sections. It's one of the better early SNES games.
