I think they may drop the Switch name. It just confused people with the Wii U. The important thing is that people know its from Nintendo. I dont think the Switch name carries a lot of weight when it come to their next console.

Couldn't disagree more. People didn't buy Wii U cuz it was a weird singe-controller asynchronous-play system that few people had any desire for, that also tried to be a direct sequel to the Wii despite the Wii having lost most of its popularity by the time it was replaced. Wii U failure had nothing at all to do with people confused by the name. Anyone interested enough to potentially spend hundreds of dollars on a video game system can do a <5 minute internet search to look up what the Wii U was. Also, if people were confused by the name then every generation people would be horribly confused by Xbox (360?!, 1?!, Series S/X?!).

The whole idea that people were confused by the name is just an excuse to not admit that Nintendo F'd up big time with the entire concept of the Wii U and Nintendo was either unwilling or unable to change concepts for the next system once the every game having motion controls fad started to fade by the Wii's fourth year. If everyone was still demanding motion control games last decade, if people were really excited about the game pad and that async gameplay setup, and if they had a killer app like Wii Sports at launch again, the Wii U would have been a smash hit. But instead it had none of those things. Name had nothing to do with it. Saying people were confused about the name would be like saying 3DS didn't do as well as DS because people were confused about its name, ignoring the obvious flaws in the system (an expensive feature that people didn't really care about, along with mobile phones starting to take away the market for low end handheld systems).

I don't think the Switch holds as strong a brand name as the Wii (temporarily) did, but its still a strong name. Switch is basically what Nintendo is now. If they are doing another hybrid, and I can't imagine they aren't, there is no reason whatsoever to move away from the Switch name. It would be very weird to move away from the Switch name if they are coming out with a direct hybrid system sequel to the Switch. They definitely are gonna want to keep the Switch brand as changing it would purely be a negative move for them.

Well Nintendo has never made a more successful console with a similar name.

Super NES sold less than the NES

GBA sold less than the GB

Wii U sold less than the Wii

3DS sold less than the DS

Many people want new things from Nintendo. Not just a simple upgrade with a weird gimmick. The Switch 2 would 100% sell less than the Switch.

Nintendo Ultra Switch, I was always disappointed they dropped the Ultra on the Nintendo 64.

Switch Too

Switch Two

Switch

Swiitch

Switch2U

Switch Up

I hope it's Switch 2 but Nintendo may do some bullshit naming as posted above lol

Bold 1: yeah, I think that goes for the third Switch, as said in the OP. :P

Bold 2: I know, right? And when the full Killer Instinct original arcade game was not gonna be available for the console I wanted to cry.

Making a case for GBA, it sold much more than GB year on year, but it was abandoned in favor to DS

As for SNES I don't think we can say the market was mature enough by the time to custimers understand what a hardware upgrade was meant to be. There was nothing to expect from Nintendo because it was only their second console. It sold less only due to stronger competition with Sega

Wii U was by no means a simple upgrade of Wii. Except in name it was a totally different thing. I will make a case that if it was exaclty a more powerful Wii with the same concept, design and controllers but named "Wii 2" it would have sold at least twice as much lol

And Im sure you can make a similar case for when the Switch 2 sells less.

haha people didn't buy less of those systems because it had the same brand name lol. NES had no competition, SNES had Genesis. GB was on the market forever while GBA was cut off early with the DS. Wii U was a poorly thought out successor to a fad that had passed. 3DS had a gimmick that people didn't really care about and which made it launch at way too high a price, and it sacrificed the power it could have used simply to do the 3D effect, plus it had to deal with the mobile game market blowing up.

See how there are actual real reasons why those systems did worse than their predecessors, and it had nothing at all to do with the name.

No matter what the next system is called, it is likely to do worse than the Switch because the Switch is insanely popular, launched with BotW, was the first system with the hybrid concept, and Animal Crossing became a cultural moment launching right as the pandemic was starting. Those are all unique and powerful things that led to its huge success, along with other things of course but those are unique to Switch and can't be replicated. Name is going to have nothing to do with the successor selling less than the Switch. Changing the name does absolutely nothing for Nintendo, while keeping the Switch name at least gives it the brand awareness of being the direct successor to pretty much the most popular system ever.

You're trying hard, but just don't have anything to work with when attempting to argue that its gonna fail if it uses the Switch name haha.

And you will say the same thing about the Switch 2. "Uh...the Switch 2 had 1 more button than the original Switch. Thats why it failed. People dont want more buttons." Its easy to say shit in hindsight.

The fact is that if the Switch is in the name it wont be the new thing to get anymore for many people. It will just be another Switch. I dont care if the controller for the Wii U was a shit smelling cactus, it should have still done way more than 14M. People were just sick of the Wii and the name Wii U didnt help.
