Forums - Sales - Famitsu Sales: Week 31, 2023 (Jul 24 - Jul 30)

It really is wild that since week 18 the Switch has been up every single week YoY. The streak could end the next couple weeks and if not for sure week 35 but either way it's been an amazing stretch.

The ps5 is likely to outsell the Nintendo wii if it continues at this sales pace. I didn't think this was possible a year ago. Looks like it's the return of Playstation in Japan

Lets not get carried away. That would be a pretty big increase over the PS4 so outperforming it enough to outsell the PS3 is a more reasonable target for now.

It's possible, especially if no one in China wants a Chinese PS5, that's a growing market that has 10x the population of Japan, even if scalpers only account for like an extra 5k-10k of sales per week, that's a significant amount of systems over time.

That continuing to happen to a notable degree for the next few years is a big assumption though. Demand inside of Japan would need to not fall off either.

so you call 2003 domination by playstation?

It's hard to match dates exactly, but 2003 might be the only year Sony shipped more hardware units to Japan than Nintendo.

FY ending March 2004 there were:
4.28m PS2 shipped (this was production shipments as Sony didn't report shipments to retail at the time)
3.15m GBA shipped
0.99m GC shipped

The data ends in March and it's slightly different (production vs shipped) but there will be at least a full 12 month period around that time where Sony was in the lead in units sold. (there may have been some PS1 shipments as well, but I don't have any estimates)

I haven't looked into it in detail for shipments but based on VGC sales data 2010 looks to be essentially a tie as well.... I suspect in terms of quarterly shipments Nintendo probably remains ahead but if it were possible to break it down there may have been a 12 month period ending just before the 3DS started shipping where Sony leads.... that being said it was more just convenient timing based on hardware releases, the DS was likely still selling more software than all the others combined so probably hard to call it playstation domination.

Pikmin is slaying the Top 10

Switch almost 80k im not surprised , it is coming for DS

Mario wonder is almost here !

Switch's 2023 now leading 2019 by 600k YTD.
Being up both YOY and week over week is nice to see.

Series S and X have also flipped, now the S is selling almost nothing while the X makes up the lion's share of sales.

I wonder how long it for would to take for the Switch to pass the Nintendo DS ?

Looks pretty even during an off year for Nintendo, so I wouldn't really call that domination by Playstation.

At the current pace and the upcoming holiday season I'd say between 6 - 9 months.

Switch will definitely become the most successful video game system in Japan.

Yeah a pretty decent chance it passes it by end of fiscal year. If not, then probably soon after like April or May next year.
