Around the Network

Global sales for March 2023 have been released which corresponds to the 29th month of sales for the PS5 and XSX and the 73rd month of sales for the Switch.

PS5 reduced the gap to PS4 lifetime sales by over 0.9m in this month. The gap between PS5 and PS4 is now 2.4m less than it was at the end of 2022. PS5 will very likely temporarily pass the Switch launch aligned next month.

Xbox is down 38% YoY and it looks like the X360 will start eating into that lead the Series currently has.

Switch is also down 28% YoY and for the year so far 25%. Is this dropping too fast to hope to catch the DS?

Since the last update the following adjustments have been made to previous months: PS5 up 255k, Switch up 6k, Xbox Series down 60k.

Charts and tables in the OP have been updated, here is the data for this month:

Famitsu Numbers for 2023 Week 17 are now in. The data and charts in the OP for Japan sales have been updated. Complete data can be found here.

A good week for Switch and PS5, another terrible week for Xbox. PS5 is now only 11k behind the PS2's 2005. If it overtook that then it would move from being the best YTD sales since 2005 for a PlayStation console to the best YTD sales since 2003. Though PS2 2005 has two good 42k weeks up next so it's unlikely to happen soon, but with FFXVI around the corner this could at that point become the fastest selling year in Japan in 2 decades for PlayStation.

Here is the data for this week:

Updated the data and charts in the OP to Famitsu Week 20.

Excellent past three weeks for the Switch reducing the gap to the DS before it inevitably overtakes sometime between Spring and Holiday 2024.

PS5 continues it's strong hardware sales and is now over 0.5m ahead of the PS4 aligned, and to think just 14 weeks ago it was behind. Over the 20 weeks this year PS5 has sold 169% more units than the PS4 in the equivalent weeks.

Xbox continues to flatline. It's promising start in Japan has taken a terrible turn.

What would start being interesting in an ideal world is $ sold, being a matrix of the untis x $, where possible. Reason I say this is because the DS for example cost between 100$ and 150$ while the Switch is between 200$ and 350$. Same idea for the other consoles.

At the very least some kind of changing average that we could cross with the sales volume to get a more apples to apples view. Because in the end, it's much easier to get a 100$ DS off the shelf than a 350$ Switch for example.

Around the Network

Been a while since I updated. All of the Japanese charts and tables in the OP have been updated to Week 50. In that time the Switch has considerably gained ground on the DS and is sure to become the best selling console of all time in Japan. The PS5 continues to outsell the PS3/PS4. Xbox Series was quickly gaining ground on the X360 when I last updated but now it's falling behind fast, in the last 52-week period X360 sold over double the Series.

@Zippy6 I like the way you put the charts in spoiler text to consolidate the original post and make selecting a specific chart quicker. That's smart.

Edit: Cool info too. Thanks for the effort in updating it.

Updated global charts and tables in the OP to November 2023 VGChartz figures. This is the 37th month on sale for the PS4/XS and the 81st month on sale for the Switch.

- PS5 has now overtaken the PS4 launch aligned.

- Xbox Series Launch Aligned is behind the Xbox One and it's possible it will fall behind the Xbox 360 too next month. It sold 1.03m in November. It will need to sell 1.68m in December to stay ahead of the Xbox 360.

- Switch has still not yet started closing the gap to the DS over the past 12-month period, despite launch aligned the 3DS having been released for the past 6 months. This will quickly change soon though.

I have revamped this thread. It now also includes launch aligned charts and data for Europe and USA.

December 2023 data for Japan has been added, the other regions are currently still using November 2023 data.

Europe charts and data has been updated to December 2023. After an incredible November for PlayStation with the heavy promotions to sell-out of the old PS5 model December has been lacklustre by comparison and couldn't compare with the PS4's monstrous December 2016. Xbox Series had a poor month, the Xbox One in it's equivalent month sold 75% more units and even more damningly the X360 in it's equivalent December sold over triple the units. The Nintendo Switch had a very nice boost compared to November, at this late stage it seems becoming one of the top 3 selling consoles in Europe is out of reach but reaching the 40.05m of the Gameboy could be a close battle.
