He is definitely as responsible for Metallica's early sound, and their direction over the first few albums, as Lars and James, if not more so. He was a big part of early Metallica, and he is a huge part of Megadeth. Metallica led the way, but Megadeth was definitely the second most significant band in the history of thrash. So, I feel like it's an easy case to make that Mustaine is the single most important person in the history of thrash metal. He is also the whiniest person in the history of humanity. But, that doesn't make his contributions to thrash any less significant. |
I don't dispute his significance in their early days. I was just being a pedant and saying he wasn't a founder. They wouldn't have needed Lloyd Grant for Hit the Lights otherwise.
