Mustaine was not a founder of Metallica.

Not in the sense of posting the ad looking for other musicians. But, he was certainly in the first incarnation of the band.  And he did much of the song writing and general leadership duties of the band in the first year or two. He is definitely as responsible for Metallica's early sound, and their direction over the first few albums, as Lars and James, if not more so.

He was a big part of early Metallica, and he is a huge part of Megadeth. Metallica led the way, but Megadeth was definitely the second most significant band in the history of thrash. So, I feel like it's an easy case to make that Mustaine is the single most important person in the history of thrash metal.

He is also the whiniest person in the history of humanity. But, that doesn't make his contributions to thrash any less significant.

I don't dispute his significance in their early days. I was just being a pedant and saying he wasn't a founder. They wouldn't have needed Lloyd Grant for Hit the Lights otherwise.

Around the Network

There were metal cliques in my high school; you had to chose: megadeth or metallica. I chose metallica, and I was willing to fight to the death over it. But now, I'd prefer to listen to Megadeth.

I'm of the Black Album generation.

I was never a big music person and Metallica you just hear so much more around. Never got deep into Megadeth, though I do have a cassette somewhere...

(Actually, I'm more an Iron Maiden guy.)

I don't like Metallica. Haven't really listened to enough Megadeth to call it, but what I have heard doesn't do much for me. It's not that I don't like metal either (quite a lot of my favourite bands fall into the metal category in some way or other, e.g. NIN, Marilyn Manson, A Perfect Circle, Type O Negative, Trail of Dead, Rammstein, Smashing Pumpkins, and many others), it's just I have a specific rather than general taste that bands seem to either hit or miss entirely.

Between the two of them, I've always preferred Metallica. The only album of theirs I flat out didn't like was St. Anger, but I'll always think their stuff from the 80s up through the "Black album" was their best.
