Forums - Gaming Discussion - PS2 dominance really made Xbox/Gamecube/Dreamcast niche until 7th generation (friends that were just one console have any could remember back then that were)

I can't really call OG Xbox niche personally, at least here in the US. Just about every gamer in my high school played Halo 2, and I believe it was the biggest first 24 hours game launch of all-time at the time of it's release (was also the first game launch to eclipse the total revenue gross of a movie's opening weekend if I'm not mistaken, it's opening of $125m wasn't beat by a movie opening until 2 years later when Pirates of the Caribbean 2 pulled off a $135m opening). Yes, PS2 sales absolutely eclipsed Xbox worldwide, and even in the US it outsold Xbox by a bit more than 3:1, but niche isn't the word I would use to describe OG Xbox in the US.

20 million hardware units and 200 - 300 million games sold ain't "niche" IMHO.

No, it made Xbox and Gamecube irrelevant. It KILLED Dreamcast, and Sega as well. And because of it, I use to literally flip PS2s off in the store when I'd walk past them lol. I was such a huge fan of Dreamcast at the time, and it took me at least six solid months to finally accept reality and buy a PS2. But man... did I have an adolescent grudge against Sony for awhile haha.

I was also into Playstation mostly have Ps1 in 1995 I didn't think Sega was gonna leave so Sony was cool next to my other consoles, my mom bought a Ps2 at launch for me and my brother. I dont have a grudge against Sony you be shocked I favored Sony if you met me over Microsoft back in 6th generation because of the 1995 nostalgia I had with PS1 aka PSX , PS1 gave me Gran Turismo 2, Tekken 1 and 3 , alot of RPG , Twisted Metal series and many more. but I do feel that most people I knew never cared for other consoles they never seen a turbografx - 16 neither which I owned aswell. I was the unique kid in every block I was a multi console fan I was seeded to hate Xbox before launch still hated them until I Xbox 360 era I soften up but I did buy an OG Xbox. I don't know how I soften up to Xbox People made me believe Microsoft will kill others but it was untrue until I found out PS2 was the killer not Microsoft at launch of Wii I was scared that PS3 might pull another trick to end Wii in 7th generation I saw Sony couldnt end Wii PS3 ended up selling bad so did Xbox 360, I had a SNES before owning a PS1 in 1995 to me I hate brands leaving a little part of me also wants NEOGEO back since SNK made consoles back in 4th generationIf the Saudi Prince ever makes a console he should make NeoGeo 2. Only one I want to come back is Sega in the hardware again. Sony stopped being a killer since I'm starting to see previous CEO like Yoshida getting into Steam Deck etc I like the current Sony.

Sony in late PS4 era changed they ignored the extreme fans that ditch PS4 for porting Last of us 1 and Horizon Zero Dawn 2018 in PC The real Sony fans never ditched PS4 nor PS5 for porting on PC nor ditch PS5 when MLB was on Xbox I know the real Sony fans never ditch Sony no matter what they do , while the extreme PSuedo fans we witness throw their PS4 in the trash or PS5 just because MLB a Sony game was on Xbox. There were others hating Sony for choosing Xcloud from Microsoft over amazon cloud or google cloud service. To me I forgot who the Playstation boss was before Jim Ryan took over but he made Playstation very likeable to others looking at few Sega fans I know on Discord.

WIsh I still had my PSP GO noone gave the PSP Go a chance I also bought Xperia Phone sony mobile Playstation, That's how deep you know I was into Sony than the masses of Sony fans

15 million true Sony fans that owned a PS Vita, I am one of them but I am Multi fan but yeah this was underrated while 117 million got PS4 or 80 million PS3 The Vita was left to die I gave it a chance

Heres my copy of Phantasy Star Nova for PS vita link --->https://www.youtube.com/shorts/KQRqjrWQkWc

Sega killed the Dreamcast. It was a great fun machine handled all wrong. Same with Nintendo and the GameCube, but Ninty kept going where Sega bowed out. Sony on the other hand did everything right with the ps2. XBox was the new kid on the block, not surprising it sold less. Plus MS killed it off after only 4 years because they used standard 3rd party parts that went up in price. PS2 was in production for 13 years! At the end new ps2's were on sale for only $80. I bought an extra two just in case.

Nintendo is a lot like Windows, bad version after good version after bad version. Hopefully Nintendo can break that cycle with Switch 2, although history is against them.

I don't think Switch 2 will flop but because it's a hybrid again those past consoles Nintendo tried different console iterations Except Nes to SNES and N64 sort of but they really messed up from Good N64 to bad Gamecube to good Wii to bad Wii U to good Switch one ( from gamecube to Switch 1 every console was different with some form of innovation.)
