Switch vs DS Sales Comparison in Japan - October 2022

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in December 2004 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

October 2022 is the 68th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch has outsold the DS by 11,689 units when you align the launches.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 1.38 million units. The DS is currently ahead of the Switch by 4.18 million units.

The 68th month for the Switch is October 2022, while for the DS it is July 2010. The Switch has sold 26.61 million units, while the DS sold 30.79 million units during the same timeframe. The DS sold current Switch sales in month 54.

The DS has sold 32.99 million units lifetime in Japan. The Switch is currently 6.38 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in Japan - October 2022

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

October 2022 is the 24th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for in Japan. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox Series 360 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 25m176 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has grown its lead over the Xbox Series X|S by 51,724 units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 123,455 units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 378,954 units in 24 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 502,409 units. Month 24 for the Xbox Series X|S is October 2022 and for the Xbox 360 is November 2007.

The Xbox 360 crossed one million units in month 40 and 1.5 million units in month 67. The Xbox 360 sold 1.66 million units lifetime.

Switch vs Wii Sales Comparison in Europe - October 2022

This monthly series compares the aligned European sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Wii.

The Wii launched in Europe in December 2006, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

October 2022 is the 68th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Europe. During the latest month, the Switch caught up to the Wii by 230,089 units.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the Wii by 2.69 million units. The Wii is currently ahead of the Switch by 2.37 million units.

The 68th month for the Nintendo Switch is October 2022 and for the Wii it is July 2012. The Switch has sold 29.00 million units, while the Wii sold 31.37 million units during the same timeframe. The Wii sold current Switch sales in month 60.

The Wii sold 33.12 million units in Europe during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 4.12 million units to outsell the Wii in Europe.

Xbox's growth over the Xbone in Japan is impressive; they may not exactly be competitive there, but given how almost non-existent they used to be, where they are now is a big step up.

Switch's victory over Wii in Europe looks all but certain; no mean feat given the Wii's unusually strong sales for a Nintendo console in the region.

I don't see Xbox ever being competitive to Nintendo or PlayStation in Japan. But a small following of maybe 2 to 3 million consoles sold per generation could be possible in the future. 

It has taken some time but Switch will overtake the Wii in the Europe soon. Japan is the main reason the Switch has outsold the Wii worldwide.

Switch vs PS3 Sales Comparison in Europe - October 2022

This monthly series compares the aligned European sales of the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation 3 launched in Europe in March 2007, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

Switch Vs. PS3 Europe:

October 2022 is the 68th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Europe. During the latest month, the PlayStation 3 has grown its lead over the Nintendo Switch by 24,740 units.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the PlayStation 3 by 1.23 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the PlayStation 3 by 4.49 million units.

The 68th month for the Nintendo Switch in Europe is October 2022 and for the PlayStation 3 it is October 2012. The Switch has sold 29.00 million units, while the PlayStation 3 has sold 24.51 million units during the same timeframe. The PlayStation 3 did not reach current Switch sales until month 87.

The PlayStation 3 sold 30.87 million units in Europe during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 1.87 million units to catch up to the lifetime sales of the PlayStation 3.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison - October 2022

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

October 2022 is the 24th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 27,788 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 3.72 million units. The PS4 is currently ahead of the PS5 by 2.83 million units.

The PS5 has sold 26.28 million units in 24 months, while the PS4 sold 28.11 million units. Month 24 for the PS5 is October 2022 and for the PS4 is October 2015.

The PS4 crossed 30 million units in month 25, 40 million units in month 31, and 50 million in month 38. The PS4 has sold 117.01 million units to date.

October 2022 is the 24th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox Series X|S when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox One by 168,031 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox Series X|S has grown by 1.21 million units. The Xbox Series X|S is currently ahead by 2.94 million units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 17.78 million units in 24 months, while the Xbox One sold 14.83 million units. Month 24 for the Xbox Series X|S is October 2022 and for the Xbox One is October 2015.

The Xbox One did not reach current Xbox Series X|S sales until month 26 when it sold 19.23 million units.

The Xbox One crossed 20 million in month 30, 30 million in month 48, and 40 million in month 61. The Xbox One has sold 51.28 million units to date.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S both launched in November 2020. The PlayStation 5 launched November 12, 2020 in North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, and the rest of the world on November 19, 2020. The Xbox Series X|S launched worldwide on November 10, 2020.

In the last 12 months, the PlayStation 5 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 1.90 million units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 7.51 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 25.28 million units in 24 months, while the Xbox Series X|S sold 17.78 million units. The PlayStation 5 has a 58.7 percent marketshare (-4.1% year-over-year), compared to 41.3 percent for the Xbox Series X|S (+4.1% year-over-year).
