I actually agree with you there to a certain extent. I can only see one of two outcomes coming from this:
Either, a) They drop the whole multiplatform nonsense or, b) They drop out of the hardware business. No inbetween.

And if for some reason they still are under the delusion that they can just have a console out there without exclusive content, then they are in for a rude awakening.

They clearly stated that they want their games to be played where gamers are. I feel like this means those games are there to stay (on other platforms), but they want to come back with some exclusivity (timed or unique content?). I think there is a way to have both (ie to have their own console and still have their games on other platforms).

I also do not think they will drop out of hardware business just yet, they will try the next generation for sure; the hybrid approach needs to be attempted first.

I believe they have already spent the money on the hybrid approach to just drop it so it's coming, but I see a significant pull back and investment in gaming in general from MS.  When you have Sony dropping Bluepoint, layoffs happening left and right within the gaming space and the new generation just not as interested in gaming as our generation, being 3rd place for MS just isn't where they want to be.  I actually see a transition for the whole industry, but MS will as always make the first move because they are at the bottom.

True. I do not see how there is any way to put whatever position Microsoft is in a any bright light :D

I'm fairly excited by this hybrid stuff to be honest, not really for being able to play console games and PC games on the same device (this has never been confirmed btw and I'm still very skeptical that it would be the case), but more because I like this kind of device (Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Xbox Ally, etc...). But the rest is a complete unknown; as you said, Microsoft may be reducing the investment. One thing is that what they have now is still there, and unless they choose to sell it (I really, really doubt it after buying Activision, as it would be really bad for investors, and we are not talking about the same amount as Nokia here) there is still a lot of potential.

I think the people thinking that Microsoft should go back to full exclusivity do not realize how bad this is for Microsoft gaming business. This is good for fans, not for Microsoft at all. And even if those fans are happy, there is no way it is going to bring more money in than going multiplatform, just not even close... I know this is unpopular to say that to certain here but this is just what it is.

When I say MS investment will be scaled back, I am saying that MS isn't going to be pushing anything on the hardware front anymore and this device will probably be the last from MS.  I see MS being happy being a third-party developer and just being happy with the teams and devs they have now but as a console developer that ship has passed and as an OEM hardware company, I also believe that ship is heading to the docks to be decommissioned.

I believe studio wise MS has a damn good solid group but the commitment to spend money like they use to do I believe is gone because MS never likes playing from behind for any period of time.  You only have to look at all of their endeavors over the years to see when MS isn't leading or close to leading, they pull out.  It's crazy they lasted this long with the Xbox to be honest.  Gaming in general is still big but it's becoming different than what it used to be and its clear as far as the market is going it's going to get worse than anything else.

I personally hope I am totally wrong and will be the first one happy if MS pulls out all the stops to make Xbox and their new hardware the device I really want and things just takes off.  I also was interested in this hybrid approach.  I really do not need MS to be a traditional console OEM and instead am also interested in a steam machine/box.  I actually like MS strategy of being able to take your games everywhere you go with whatever hardware you want to use.  I wanted this premium system they are talking about as long as it meets some specific advantages I am looking for because even today, the Xbox out of all the console hardware I own is the one I use the most.  I hope this woman makes me feel stupid but seeing MS current direction and how their CEO talks about the division and gaming in general, I am not confident that this new CEO is put in charge to continue to lead in that direction.

After years of demand, Microsoft has stealthily released an Xbox store sort options update in February 2026, giving Xbox users four useful new ways to search for deals.

Open the Microsoft Store on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, the Xbox PC app, or via browser, and you'll find new options that let you sort listed games by 'Price from high to low,' 'Price from low to high,' 'Discount from high to low,' and 'Most Wishlisted.'

CEO Asha Sharma moves to employ two senior marketing leaders, presumably suggesting a shift in Xbox’s marketing strategy toward lifecycle strategy, franchise focus, and more disciplined campaign execution.

Publishing & Lifecycle Marketing Leader • This role is responsible for developing and executing how Xbox communicates with fans across devices and ecosystems.

Senior Product Marketing Manager: • Focuses on leading go-to-market efforts for a “beloved RPG franchise,”
