“This might sound weird, but whatever happens with it, I don’t care,” he says. “My attitude towards properties that I work on, and even characters that I create, is that I don’t own any of this stuff. It was never mine. And the thing that I made is what I made.”

“If later on other people working in the space do new things with it and change it, I’ll maybe have opinions on it, but I don’t get attached to things in that way,” he says. “I don’t feel like it’s healthy for me to be really invested in something I have no control over, frankly.

“There are things that I might watch and say, ‘I don’t think I would have taken this that way’, and then there are other things that I think are really cool. But it’s not my space, it was never my thing. I was a guest working in it. So I try to keep a level of distance between myself and the setting.”

"Even though some studios have very strict no-crunch policies, people are still being asked to do either impossible things." For Sawyer, it was clear long before the launch of Pillars of Eternity 2 that "we were in a position where we knew that we did not have enough time, nine months before we hit that wall."

Sawyer says concerns were raised with management, with the team stating that "the options were either to invest more time in it, or to cut scope and staff." Obsidian execs declined to do either of those things, and things got worse when Sawyer's team was forced to keep a major feature in the game against their will, and then again once a commitment to voicing every character in the game was made.

"It was that feeling of accelerating towards a brick wall," Sawyer says, admitting that "I and a lot of other people on the team became really harsh, and were snapping at people. I didn't really recognise myself at a certain point because I had very little tolerance for time being wasted and questions and things like that. I was pushing people in a way I had never done on a game before."

Eventually, Sawyer forced the studio's hand, securing a delay by refusing to return to the office unless he was given more time. Pillars of Eternity 2 eventually launched in May 2018 to good reviews, but poor sales. That muted reception was "very demoralising" for Sawyer, especially when he reflected on his own leadership of the project: "I was like, 'Damn, I was this huge, awful asshole to this team'. And it felt like a big waste."

Damn, the Begin Again: Tale of Two Wastelands modpack for Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas is fantastic, by far the best way to play the games. The mix of graphical enhancements, Quality of Life improvements, and new content is amazing.  I'm really enjoying my replay of Fallout 3 so far.

At that point you’re just playing a different game. Best way to play FNV/3 is completely un-modded and vanilla. If it ain’t vanilla it ain’t right.

Only problem is that the vanilla games look pretty horribly outdated these days, and Fallout 3 not only looks horribly outdated, but also plays horribly outdated without even aim down sight mechanics for the guns (which is why I am glad there are leaks that Fallout 3 at least is getting remastered). There are some mod packs that are designed to preserve the vanilla games and only improve the graphics while staying true to the vanilla artstyle, but they didn't have very high success percentages on Nexus Mods and indeed I tried one and it didn't work for me. That is why I went with Begin Again, if you follow the instructions precisely it actually works unlike many of the other modpacks.

Honestly aside from the fact that you play as the Lone Wanderer (Fallout 3 protagonist) in New Vegas, since it combines the two games into one, the Begin Again mod pack is one of the more Vanilla friendly ones. Almost all graphics improvements are done while staying true to the vanilla artstyle (save for the removal of 3's infamous green puke filter). The gameplay and quality of life improvements are mainly done to add gameplay and quality of life improvements from Fallout 4 and 76 into 3 and NV, which feels consistent with what we will likely get from the official Fallout 3 remaster/remake.

They also included the official Josh Sawyer mod, the mod that Fallout New Vegas director Josh Sawyer designed for New Vegas with balance and gameplay improvements that Sawyer had planned for New Vegas but which got cut for time due to Bethesda wanting NV out one year before Skyrim so that the two games wouldn't divide the Bethesda fanbase between them in 2011.

I will play on Gamepass, New Vegas. Are mods possible on that version? Never played NV before.

Mods that don't require the various script extenders work on Bethesda games on Gamepass, but sadly alot of the best mods require the script extenders, which is why I ended up grabbing Fallout 3, NV, and 4 on Steam while they were on sale thanks to the show.

I have a Z1 Extreme I could play it on as well. Can you mid GP games like that if on a PC ot does it have to be a non GP version?

Do people want to live in a vault because they want to have fun with their cousin?

Happy to see Golden week deals but have most of them only got DOA 5 Last Round.

PC Gamepass used to not work with mods at all, because Xbox didn't give you access to the game file folders, but they added the ability to access the file folders at some point. So you should be able to install a fair few mods on PC Gamepass these days. But like I said, the main issue with Bethesda games at least is that Script Extenders don't work with the Xbox Store versions of games, which PC Gamepass uses, and many of the best mods for Bethesda Games need script extenders like FOSE, NVSE, and SKSE.

For the older Bethesda games like Oblivion, Fallout 3, and New Vegas, you will need to search for mods that don't require OBSE (Oblivion), FOSE (Fallout 3), or NVSE (New Vegas). As for the more recent Bethesda games, Skyrim and Fallout 4 have official in-game mod stores and all mods on the in-game mods stores are those that don't require script extenders, so in-game modding will work on PC Gamepass. Only issue is that you will have to learn how to build out your mod load order to prevent conflicts, which is pretty tricky.

I will have to wait for a major price drop before I buy a digital version.  Fucking lack of physical copies on Xbox is about to push me over the edge.

weird, didn't their campaign have physical xbox copies? You'd think there would be a limited run or something
