Forums - Sales - Rumor: Sony to Ship 30 Million PS5 Consoles Next Fiscal Year

You weren't responding to me but...what??

Liquid_Laser simply stated he doesn't think PS5 will go from shipping/selling well under 20M this FY to having the single best year for a home console in the history of gaming next FY.

I fail to see how saying PS5 won't have the industry's greatest year ever and ship 30M means that it'll sell worse than PS3 or it'll sell worse than this fiscal year which will be a few million under 20M.

As for warning signs PS5 won't ship (and presumably sell) 30M systems in a year...well I'd say the main warning sign is that PS5 hasn't sold close to 20M yet and 30M would be the best console year ever. And there are so far zero signs that point to PS5 suddenly nearly DOUBLING their annual sales. Seems like a pretty serious warning sign haha.

Like, you comments don't have anything to do with the comment you quoted.

If you noticed my other comment, you'd notice that I am expecting PS5 to sell more like 20-25 million myself.

The related part is that Liquid_Laser seems to believe that consoles are going to fall off a cliff.

My comment wasn't directly responding to that post. I was asking him some follow up questions about some of his posts in another thread from a couple of months ago.

Liquid_Laser's posts from another thread:

I expect this to be the peak year for PS5 hardware sales.

I believe the data shows the exact opposite.  In fact, outside of Nintendo's and Sony's quarterly reports, the only region where we get actual hard numbers is Japan.  In Japan, it is quite clear that the PS5 has pathetic software sales.  People in Japan have almost no interest at all in buying PS5 games.  That is what the hard data tells us.  The reason for this, is because all of the best selling games in Japan (3m+) are on the Switch.  PS5's best selling game can barely crack 100k physical.  Switch does in fact compete with PS5.

If you are talking about PS5 lifetime sales, there are plenty of warning signs that it's not going to sell anywhere near what PS4 will sell.  If you think there are no signs, then you are simply choosing to ignore the information that is plainly there.

PS5 + XBS will never get above 130m.

Like a couple of months ago Liquid Laser flat out said Series XS and PS5 combined would sell 130 million lifetime and that it wasn't clear which one would come out the winner. Meaning PS5 selling 60 million lifetime remains a possibility in his mind.

For someone with so many delusional takes, at least have the courtesy not to call others delusional.

With Microsoft providing tougher competition than last gen and Japanese sales being next to pathetic?
I'm gonna call this is a big fat NO.

I don't see the PS5 reaching 30 million in the next FY, but I do see it easily crossing 20m. Could see that FY be a record setting FY for hardware sales for PlayStation.

I don't know about Sony being able to manufacture that many PS5s, but even if they could, I don't think they could sell that many in a year.

I know that PS5 demand is incredibly high right now and I believe that will push the console to strong sales for several years, but 30m a year is reserved for things like the DS peak - something that is in high demand and in the impulse-buy price range.  Even the Switch at $299 didn't quite reach that with the Animal Crossing/Pandemic combo.

Originally, I said that I could see the PS5 doing 25m max for one of its fiscal years, which would already be over 2m more than the PS2 peak, and I'm sticking to that.  I think Sony would have to go a different route for Playstation (different type of business model/more affordable) - something that would appeal a lot more to Japan, for example - to possibly reach a 30m shipment year for PS... and clearly, that type of system is not what they're interested in making.

Sales are still limited by what Sony makes and ships. Technically sales are even more dire in Japan due to third party buyers shipping consoles out of Japan.

Next year will likely be bigger for Japan with more shipments and games like FFXVI coming out.

Besides all that, PS4 did fine without doing that well in Japan.

I don't doubt that, but 30 million?!?

The Switch sold as well as a console could across all major regions, especially in Japan and the US, and it still came up short.

Even if Sony isn't limited by production and shipments, I find it very hard to believe that they'll be able to reach that mark. Especially w/ Microsoft closing the gap and gaining momentum since they're in much more direct competition with each other than they are with Nintendo or vice-versa.

With Microsoft pulling ahead in the US and with Japan being near non-existent, it would have to take record breaking sales in Europe and the Rest of the World for them to even have a shot.

When did this happen? I thought the ps5 was still growing the gap.

It takes genuine talent to see greatness in yourself despite your absence of genuine talent.

Didn't know getting outsold weekly and monthly on NPD/UK reports means its closing the gap now either.

Logic and definition of words keeps shifting on the internet forums these days.

The PS5 outsold the XBS in the US in August according to NPD, outsold the XBS in the last few weeks there too according to VGChartz and in the UK the PS5 is also selling better than the XBS.
