@DarkNight_DS How does your idea of the box art, calling it "lone wolf" and throwing in wolf cubs or some old man guide, relate to the game itself? The wolf on the cover is the reincarnated goddess of creation Amaterasu, not just any wolf. Also, the fact it is cel-shaded, with the boxart looking cartoony, and since the Wii is very much a casual system and mothers will be buying games for their little kids, they'll see the cartoon wolf and think it's a child's game, which judging from the success of the crappy shovelware kids games, that could be a good thing. However, they need to actually break some eggs and invest in advertising to interest the rest of the potential market, without sacrificing the integrity of the product in doing it.

I was kidding a bit when I wrote that, in all honesty though what I wrote isn't exactly wrong. Okami is a horrible name for a western audience. The box art makes the game look like a Japanimation movie. We may love the game for what it is but the game is being marketed at such a niche market (one that likes Japanimation and japanese culture. Remember: I'm talking about the western market). It could have used a slightly different method to get itself sold and into people's hands. A bait and switch success wouldn't have been that bad. At least people would have gotten a great game.

I agree , the name itself tosses away many gamers , especially the casual one . The boxart seems like its a graphics adventure game , and unfortunatly mnay are turned away just looking at it :(

Oh , and FJ-Warez : well read DmeisterJs comment :P

Okami sales are good when you look at it from the publisher perspective. The original sold 270k on a much larger install base. This cost far less to develop and is on pace to surpass that original figure.

lol , Patapon opened with 48 k and people where saying that they where expecting much more , and it will never make a profit . And now a 47 k opening is not a bad one :P

Well Il tell you one thing : told you so :P

PS : sales where higher than waht I was expecting :D

Well, Okami is a cheap port of a two years old game, launched with little advertising, so yeah, 50k is good...

Patapon, well, wasn´t a new game???

Does Patapon look like an expensive game?

Have you seen any advertising for Patapon?

[The answer to both questions is no.]

So if 50k opening week is good for Okami, then Patapon had a good first week also.  Yayz!

I never claim the opposite I was just asking if it was a new game...

So yeah, if patapon is close (in context) with okami, so yeah, 50k is a nice number...

@Hunter_alien: It's funny how Instant_Karma seems so oblivious to a simple fact. He obviously loves the game (which I'm sure I will as well once I crack open the plastic) but fails to realize that mass market success will be hard to attain with the games current name and box art.

For example: Who cares about some "reincarnated goddess of creation Amaterasu" in the western market. It means nothing!

On the other hand, people love Wolves and stories about animals. Sell it a different way is all I'm asking for. It's a bit too late to fix it now but come on, someone at Capcom should have stood up and said: "Guys this name sucks ass, let's run with Lone Wolf" It's got a better western appeal to it.

EDIT: Lone Wolf is just an example and only an example.  Call it whatever you'd like as long as it sounds western enough ;)

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

I really like the quote from the online advertisement, which says that Okami is "The best game you never played.".

I didn't know this game existed back then, until I heard about it online for the Wii, similar to MH, I never knew about it back in the day, now I went back and bought it for the PS2 love it and can't wait for the Wii title.

Capcom sucks at marketing in America, they were better back in the days of Megaman.

It's like Devil May Cry or bust.

Maybe in Japan once you make that 1 game that sells like crazy, you don't need to advertize your IP's anymore?

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

The Official Huge Monster Hunter Thread:

The Hunt Begins 4/20/2010 =D

Not bad for a two year old PS2 game. Okami deserves to be played. PS2 or Wii, it doesn't matter. This is the kind of game that we rarely see nowadays. AAAA ;)

I don't remember people calling Patapon a bomb. Perhaps in a thread similar to this one there were a few vocal posters saying that the sky was falling...but the oddly animated, quirky game seems to have gotten off to a decent start.

Okami is much the same. It won't be a multi-million seller...or even a million seller. We tend to grade games like this on a very different level from typical AAA games. So I think the arguments that are happening in this thread so far are arguing for two different points.

The people who are saying Okami is selling well are realizing that Okami is a sleeper title and would be very, very lucky to ever hit 500,000. To them a 50,000 opening in a single territory is good news.

To the people saying that it doesn't necessarily have legs, I think you are thinking of million-seller legs. And no...it doesn't have those. But it will probably do 8-10,000 a week for the next couple months.

classic sounds nice. AAA title for me always includes some sales success. But I got it you can call it like you want.

that'd be really odd if AAA meant that, since almost all PS3 games to date have been AAA since revelation all the way up until release.. indicating it has nothing to do with sales, but rather positive hype/reviews surrounding it

but then i'm not surprised that a game that was AAA on ps2 can no longer be called AAA if it is on a nintendo console

edit: after rereading it, this post might seem harsher than the actual tone i'm meaning for, but meh..

you shouldn't eat so many mushrooms The thing has nothing to do with a Nintendo console but with the fact that its a two year old game. Its still an awesome game but if you would take God of War now and put it on the 360 it would also not be a Blockbuster anymore. Time just marches on.
