Forums - Website Topics - NeoGAF gets really cranky about NYT mentioning VGChartz

There are some really good GAF posters for sure.

However it's more like a social club than a discussion forum. If you simply piss off the wrong person, you will be banned. There is no divergent opinion.

So for all those of you who complain about the mods here, it could be worse, much worse. At least we attempt to follow certain rules and guidelines. No such thing exists at GAF AFAIK. If a mod doesn't like you, you're gone, end of discussion forever. Nobody is going to stand up for a banned user because they know they will be banned as well.

Thats exactly why I love you guys. You are the best mods ever and I wouldn't trade you guys in for any other mods on these other forums :)

All too true, I'm afraid. I enjoy visiting NeoGAF even now because, with so many voices, there's always a few who have something interesting to say. But the jackass-to-good poster ratio is close to 1:1, with too many of the mods being in the first category. I recall the thread about Dan Hsu leaving EGM. He was never my favorite guy, and I think he's partly to blame why that magazine is pure crud now, but plenty of people feel otherwise, and they were filling the thread with best wishes for the dude. Then along came a mod to troll, and the whole thing went to hell from there.

The biggest problem with that incident is that it's far from being an isolated one. But the mods here would never in a million years act that way.

Can I get my brownie points now, please?

I find it funny they talked about us. Then we found out and talked about them talking about us. Then they found out and now are talking about us talking about them.

I will admit when I 1st came to this site I questioned the credibility of the site simply because of the Z. I now realize that it is credible because the uncanny accuracy. I do with ioi would ive up just one of his sources and shut all of them up.

Since they may read this. I ask you to look at this with a unbias mind. Most go to GAF and learn they hate VGC and then do the same. There are probably many on GAF that like VGC but dont say anything because they fear a ban. Which is rediculous to ban because the use of a site. Anyways if you look at in with no bias then you will see that VGC is really accurate when it comes to hardware and does ok when it comes to software. The only way for ioi to get such accurate numbers before NPD even comes out is to have sources. For Europe and Japan he is on par with Chart Track and Famitsu. Sure some # will be off occasionaly but he has the closest free number on the net.

I agree with you, 100%. I never thought this site was interesting, but after being on this site long enough, the numbers are the closest for a free site. Not to mention we have intelligent posters when it comes to the numbers. I have yet to see a site so dedicated to Video Game salez (thats right, a z) from a hardware and software perpective. The closest free numbers on the net.

The really funny thing is if this was neogaf, Shio would have been banned for liking a site the mods hate. Gotta love the professionalism.

Honestly their way of modding is childish and immature, and that describes much of the userbase. When you have limit freedom of discussion to nothing but the mods' popular opinion, you are no longer a legitimate forum. There is no legitimacy in destroying freedom of opinion, or intelligent discussion. Any site that honestly discourages these two things has quite a few issues that need to be dealt with.

I prefer nonviolence as a means to conflict resolution. Hitting back makes you no better then the other guy even if they swung the first punch. The better policy is to ignore them entirely, and that exposes them for their misanthropic nature. The irrational guy throwing a tantrum about someone that has no problem in particular with them is far more likely to drive down their credibility.

While we might find it humorous that it irritates them for no rational reason its better to let the comments slide, and keep doing your own thing. Eventually their free flowing hostility will poison their well, and more people will look elsewhere for civil discussion, and once that happens what can they do?

Lets not give them any attention. Nobody here has anything to prove, and if we give them the recognition they deserve which is none whatsoever it will only cause them more grief. Nothing wrong with not liking a sight, but is it really something to discuss. Better to discuss something relevant.

We should endeavor to take the high road. That speaks louder then a wise ass remark. That is where you find moral high ground, and if the members here conduct themselves with a high degree of integrity it will shine out to the passive observer.

Wow. So this thread was a success.

GAF is doing something right, because they pull way more traffic than VGC despite supposedly being gay Nazis (?).

GAF should just take VGC for what it is and not worry about it.

And VGC should do the same towards GAF. I check out magazine scans and japanese translations and the like on GAF all the time. They're great for a lot of stuff like that... plus random sparrings with Jaffe.

I'd rank both GAF and VGC above sites like IGN anyday. At least you know what you're getting. And both sites seem to get good discussion and far better observations and analysis than the big sites which cut-and-paste to "report" and regurgitate forum flames as "editorials."

I can understand celebrating being cited alongside Pachter by the Times from a traffic perspective, but not from a credibility perspective. For those in the know, who can recognize that the article is garbage and know that Pachter is a punchline, it shouldn't lend any credibility to VGC.

BTW, for the GAFers reading, the great example of VGC blowing it with the numbers is RE4:Wii. Crosscheck the year-end 2007 totals (under World >> Weekly) with Capcom's year-end million-seller list update. Oh the shame.

But for the most part, the site has a huge compilation of "good enough" data. Accuracy will continue to get better with time, but in the meantime other values, like the plethora of info in one place, the timliness of the numbers, etc., better serve the low end market of forum rats and the New York Times.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Since some people are complaing about the Z again (especially the gaffers), here's something for them:

Hey Erik, Vgchartz is actually getting 50 % to 100 % more traffic than NeoGAF, at least according to Alexa.
