Because its much more legally difficult to seize the assets than it is to seize the interest. This is where realpolitik comes into play.

Ahhh, the old question of restraint vs doing what we all want/need.

Yesn't

If it's frozen, it can be frozen pretty much indefinitely, so it's a net loss for Russia.

But if it would be spent, it would get unfrozen for this and thus would need to pay back Russia that sum.

Effectively, if we were to spend the frozen assets, we would pretty much pay for Russia's recovery after the war - and I'm pretty sure nobody wants to give them another head start like that.

Maybe I'm just naive, but if we end up not spending the frozen assets, I don't think we're going to keep them frozen forever either. Russia will probably get them back sooner or later. On the other hand, I don't think we're going to be paying Russia anything for any spent assets if we do decide to spend them. I don't think we want to, and I doubt anything could actually force us to pay. With the way things are going, Trump could probably do so, because out politicians seem to like bending over, but I really doubt we're going to be spending any assets if there's any risk of Trump forcing us to pay. And Russia definitely can't force us to pay.

We would need to pay Russia back for that?  Is there a precedent for that statement Boffer? In other words, when has this happened before?

As much as I understand it, most countries don't want to confiscate the assets because it's probably illegal. You could still do it but so could China then do the same with Western assets.

The most favorable plan is the reparation loan. if you can legally argue that Russia needs to pay for the damage they've done in Ukraine, then you can use those assets. Russia's only way to get those back would be to pay for the damages in Ukraine and since that would be probably even more than those few hundred billions, it would mean that we could indeed use Russia's assets and never pay Russia back for it.

But there's still not a real answer to if and how they will handle those assets to use it for Ukraine.

Ukraine is still waiting for clarity on the “billions of dollars” in weapons promised by Trump, amid confusion over his claim that 17 Patriot systems could be on the way.

Major General Skibitskyi confirmed Ukraine doesn’t know whether Trump meant full batteries, launchers, or interceptors.

Trump told reporters, “He shouldn't target Moscow,” when asked whether Zelensky should strike Moscow. He added that his administration does not plan to supply Ukraine with long-range missiles.

Putin continues to bombard Kyiv repeatedly, killing and injuring thousands of civilians. What a disgrace.

Didn't take long for the restrictions to come before even knowing what they're sending which nobody yet knows.

Russia mocks Trump’s 50-day ultimatum: “We’ve survived 50 days, 24 hours, 100 days—we’ll handle sanctions too,” Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said. Meanwhile, a Kremlin official told the Washington Post that Russia is ready to fight “to the end”.

50 days to continue bombing civilians until Trump delays it again.

The EU will not yet approve its 18th sanctions package against Russia on July 15, as Slovakia and Malta have not lifted their objections.

EU needs serious reform, it is completely ineffective in times of crisis or times where quick action is needed. The EU has a total population of over 450m and 5.9m can hold back the entire block, Lol. Represents 1.3% of the block. Even fucking Hungary isn't blocking, although that may be because they know Slovakia is being the nuisance so Hungary doesn't have to stick its neck out.

🙄 Trump: I am on nobody’s side, want to stop the killing. Zelensky should not target Moscow.

Back to the fence of "I am on nobody's side"

If he walks trough a park and sees a woman get raped "I'm on nobody's side". This is the worst you can ever say, that's why I hate Switzerland's politics so much even though everyone else loves them for this attitude...
