Love to see it. I doubly hope for Ukraine's victory over Russia now. Not only to see Ukraine free of Putin's influence and Putin humiliated and hopefully his regime being destabilized and leading to his ouster, but it would be a huge "fuck you" to Musk, Trump, and Vance.
Bofferbrauer2 said: It depends on what exactly is mentioned in the contract. France was absolutely vivid when that contract was cancelled and wanted to punish Australia as much as possible when it happened. The reason was because they were not allowed to sell nuclear subs to non-nuclear countries like Australia - but that's exactly what the US did, who came up with that clause in the first place. As for Poland, the question about financing all the new fancy equipment had cropped up a couple times already, so this might be a nice excuse as for why they wanted to cancel that contract. The US are more and more going to "Rules for thee, but not for me". |
Australia is actually part of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty and has always pushed for a world without Nuclear.
We actually control a significant amount of fissile material, for example I have worked at a minesite called "Olympic Dam" which depending on production output is ranked anywhere from 2nd to 4th in the world in terms of uranium Output for any given year.
And that's just the by-product of mining operations there.

We as a nation *can* acquire and build Nuclear weapons, we were instrumental in aiding the United Kingdom and United States to build, test and support their Nuclear Ambitions and we have the modern technological platforms to deliver such weaponry, that knowledge and research didn't just disappear.
The issue is... We lack the political ambition and of course Uranium Enrichment/Power generation.
But we do host the USA's Nuclear-capable bombers/boats/subs.
I am personally against Nuclear in my own country.

As for how we treated France... That was a disgusting move by the Prime Minister of the day who copped a lot of hate over that even here.
Keep in mind this was our leader who decided it was appropriate to catch a plane to Hawaii and drink cocktails, posting photos of himself on the beach having a good time.... While thousands of us Firefighters were fighting as hard as we can to save hundreds of towns and cities from destruction.. Sadly many people still died.
Our Prime Minister at the time was basically a Temu version of Trump, incompetent and self-serving at every level.

Maybe he's right, but at this rate, the US is most certainly not going to run the world like it used to.
The USA doesn't run the world. I would argue China does these days...
The USA might be our largest ally militarily, but China is our biggest economic partner, everything China does affects us more significantly than the USA... The same goes for most other countries these days, it's China who has the balls to push economically.
For example... American Tariffs on Australian minerals and resources is insignificant, but a Chinese Tariff on Australian minerals and resources? That would screw us over.

I saw what happened in the oval office meeting..
So, was this a mafia style extortion tactic? If demanding half of a country's resources in exchange for protection doesn't fit that bill, I'm not sure what does. It's like saying, "Nice country you've got there; it'd be a shame if something happened to it."
Vladimir Putin was probably somewhere sipping vodka and chuckling. After all, in his exclusive meeting, he probably offered Trump access to rare earth metals in Ukraine's annexed territories. Talk about playing both sides.. Putin's got more leverage than a seesaw at a playground.

China's exports already exceeds USA's by a lot. USA's imports are still higher but considering that comparable products from China are cheaper I would guess the sheer amount of goods traded between China and the rest of the world is already much higher so that China is more important to keep the world running. And that will just increase when the economies of African and Asian countries get stronger. Especially with USA stopping their softpower programs there...
And all those tarrifs will also "help" countries to look for other trade partners.
Where USA is probably still much stronger from a financial standpoint is their internal market but that's not that relevant for the rest of the world. A higher GDP doesn't mean much for other countries when it's only from a huge internal market

It's one thing to find other countries to buy things from (you can build another factory somewhere else) but it's much more difficult to find new markets to sell to.
US Market is & will still be very important for many EU & Asian Companies. The tariffs will hurt US consumers and foreign MNCs, as will the retaliatory tariffs.
