Bofferbrauer2 said: It depends on what exactly is mentioned in the contract. France was absolutely vivid when that contract was cancelled and wanted to punish Australia as much as possible when it happened. The reason was because they were not allowed to sell nuclear subs to non-nuclear countries like Australia - but that's exactly what the US did, who came up with that clause in the first place. As for Poland, the question about financing all the new fancy equipment had cropped up a couple times already, so this might be a nice excuse as for why they wanted to cancel that contract. The US are more and more going to "Rules for thee, but not for me". |
Australia is actually part of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty and has always pushed for a world without Nuclear.
We actually control a significant amount of fissile material, for example I have worked at a minesite called "Olympic Dam" which depending on production output is ranked anywhere from 2nd to 4th in the world in terms of uranium Output for any given year.
And that's just the by-product of mining operations there.

We as a nation *can* acquire and build Nuclear weapons, we were instrumental in aiding the United Kingdom and United States to build, test and support their Nuclear Ambitions and we have the modern technological platforms to deliver such weaponry, that knowledge and research didn't just disappear.
The issue is... We lack the political ambition and of course Uranium Enrichment/Power generation.
But we do host the USA's Nuclear-capable bombers/boats/subs.
I am personally against Nuclear in my own country.

As for how we treated France... That was a disgusting move by the Prime Minister of the day who copped a lot of hate over that even here.
Keep in mind this was our leader who decided it was appropriate to catch a plane to Hawaii and drink cocktails, posting photos of himself on the beach having a good time.... While thousands of us Firefighters were fighting as hard as we can to save hundreds of towns and cities from destruction.. Sadly many people still died.
Our Prime Minister at the time was basically a Temu version of Trump, incompetent and self-serving at every level.
