broken PS3 version? what?

You also said:

"I played it on the 360, which by all accounts was a vastly superior experience"

Now degrading yourself to fanboy talk?

@EaglesEye379

I was not reviewing AC, and this conversation is not with you either. Yes, I'm rude.

Magnific, tone it down. There is absolutely no reason to be rude.

Don't take my word about it on the PS3 AC game, just read almost any review or check forums when it released. PS3 owners and reviewers were up in arms over screen tearing, freezing, and bad framerates on the PS3 version. The 360 version didn't have any of those problems and if it did, they were marginal compared to the PS3.

^My PS3 copy didn't flinch for 1 second the whole game. I give the game a big plus for steady framerate, and zero glitches. No freezing at all, just a little long on load times at the beginning of missions nothing bothersome though.

The moment you said your version was "vastly superior on all accounts" it just stroke me as fanboyish crap. That's all.

rocket i think that what you are saying is that there aren't any perfect games on the ps3. Which I will agree with. However, I don't see any on the 360 either. Just try to understand how hard it is for a studio to have all this pressure to release a blockbuster game, and yet get slaughtered by critics and gamers for not taking enough chances.
It isn't an easy thing to be original. Sometimes, If you come up with a great idea it has probably already been implemented yaknow?

I don't think there is such a thing as a "perfect game". Portal is about as close as it comes IMO and that game had the luxury of being only three hours long. It's a lot harder to make a full-featured title sustain that kind of greatness over 7-20 hours.

My point is that the PS3 has yet to receive one amazing title. Then again, IMO the 360 only has Gears and Mass Effect while the Wii only has SMG. Those are really the only "great" games I have played this generation. I've played a lot of very good or good titles, but few really impressed me overall.

Of course, as mentioned earlier, I'm pretty brutal on some games people love.

Now that I think about it, I believe there was a firmware update that improved a lot of AC's problems after it released. In that case, we'll just have to disagree on this one.

While this conversation is very off topic, I must comment on this because I recently had the game from Gamefly and finished it. Except for the frame rate that wasn't smooth 100% of the time, I only had some minor technical problems with the game. For example, I broke the line of sight with persuing enemies and hid in a roof garden, the enemies could not find me and then resumed their normal patrol patterns. However, one guard while standing on the middle of a roof, suddenly moved like he was going down a ladder and then twitched back to normal and then actually walked towards the ladder to the side of the building. He did this a couple of times before he finally reached the ladder and climbed down. That was pretty much as bad as it got for me.

I just don't understand why people will defend Uncharted as being so great. It basically straight ripped the cover mechanic from Gears and GRAW, except ND didn't bother to implement it as well as either. The story is a straight rip from an Indiana Jones movie and while it's fun, it's extremely predictable until the end, which was just flat-out stupid. The gameplay was horribly repetitive (enter area, clear area, move on) and the enemies, which were a simple group of bad guys going for money, later switched over to fucking zombie nazis. WEAK. The end boss battle was pathetic (Mass Effect, now that had an epic boss battle) and the jet ski segments were inane. Gee, let's randomly throw in water segments where you have to dodge exploding barrels in the water. Lame. It's not a bad game but with so many obvious faults, it can't be considered great in any way, shape, or form.

To each of his own opinion, you may not think Unchated was great but the general consensus such as press and fans alike would disagree, IMO i think there are much more positive things than negatives. But then again maybe your perception of "great" is different from mine since i think a great game typically has a score of 8 or higher. And the story was purposefully made to have a generic pulp action theme as stated many time by ND.

But, as for the Gears and GRAW comparison... I'm sure you realize that Gears copied the cover system in Killzone: liberation which copied from Killswitch, which copied from MGS, which copied from Winback, which took the idea of cover (AKA stop and pop) from Space Invaders....

On topic: I can't believe so many people are worrying and complaining over RROD, it only happened to me once. But the REAL threat is that pesky disk read error, before i used my DVD lens cleaner, it scratched my games and prevented me from playing for anymore than 30 minutes. Now it doesn't do any more disk scratching but that damned disk read error blade still pops up frequently when i play 360 titles. Atleast with RROD I'm not forced to play games just to have the experience ruined by having to save (if possible) every minute to avoid having to start whole chapters and levels over again.

@rocketpig

I agree 100% about what you said of amazing titles this generation on each console. I'm also very harsh on games these days. I'm an old gamer and I've seen it all to give my approval so easily. Of course it always depends on the type of game, and many other things, and I don't demand every game to have a hollywood blockbuster production to like it, of course that would be ridiculous. But I'm not the kind of critic to give props for "potential" rather than execution.

I'm not giving the game props for potential, I'm giving it credit for doing certain things very well and taking a few chances on different kinds of gameplay. And I factor that into my final rating. I'll give the game that tries and truly succeeds on some levels while faltering in others a better review than the game that tries less and has a few less problems.

I realize that the idea of cover is old. I used Gears and GRAW because they're the most recent ones that did a very good job of implementing a cover system.

And yes, there are more positives than negatives in Uncharted. People are acting as if I hated the game... I didn't. After all, I just gave it 8/10. As for the story, well, I actually liked the story. It didn't try too hard and kept a fun vibe going. Then the zombie nazis started running all over my screen. That's the point where I rolled my eyes and just buckled down to finish the game. The fun was gone.

An 80% ranking is far from great IMO. It's a good game but let's not put it up there with the games that have really succeeded in changing our perception of gaming in recent years.
