Is Oculus 2 tethered or untethered? I guess the problem is that only untethered VR sets could be tracked as the rest of them would fall under the accessories category. IDK, it could get messy.

I would agree with your timeline if it weren't for the fact that they talked it up at CES. CES is a tradeshow focused mostly on tech that will launch this year. It is certainly possible that it will get delayed, but I'm 90% confident that Sony is trying to get it out this year.
If I had to bet, I'd bet on 2022. I wouldn't bet very much though.

Who cares? We don't need to track every VR headset. Quest is clearly the market leader, just track them.
I love seeing the Quest 2's success and VR becoming more mainstream. I don't know if the system is going to be in the spotlight much longer, though. I love it but there's so many headsets on the market and I feel like a successor will be announced very very soon.

I think it is matter of "it's good enough" approach. OQ2's hadrware is good enough. It's SoC is good enough for decent visuals, it's tracking is good enough (better than PSVR actually form my experience) and it's resolution and FoV are good enough. Add to that $300 price tag and it becomes "a great buy". So, if Nintendo, for example, decided to jump into VR, they have real world example of how it's done with "good enough" approach, which matches their usual approach to making hardware. |
I would love a Nintendo headset. Botw2 in VR would be amazing.
Problem with good enough is, that it's not good enough for the hardcore gamers. It's always the first complaint, doesn't look good, too many sacrifices in visuals, next to short games. I bet a lot of Quest2 users use it to stream from PC. Anyway you see the complaints all the time about the weak Switch hardware and how Steamdeck is going to be better. (doubt it, but it does have more grunt)
But love the $10 million sales figure. VR is not a fad, just a slow burner, starting to pick up speed. 3D tvs bit the dust, Kinect is done, Voice control forgotten, Motion controls are back to occasional use, yet VR is still growing.

I mainly don't want to get my own hopes up lol. My leg starts shaking when I think about GT7 in PSVR 2.0 :) Yet whether GT7 will actually allow the whole game to be played in VR is also still a big question.
But who knows!

(In time for GT7, that's just nonsense, although GT7 getting delayed to Q4 is always very possible haha)
It does seem like this will be the decade VR starts to really take off. I look forward to seeing how big it gets and what sort of advancements happen in the next 5-10 years.

Aren't motion controls in a way growing again now as well since they go hand in hand with VR?

I meant motion controls for non VR games, the Wii era where motion controls were the future. They still are for VR of course, but flat screen gaming has dialed their use back to once in a blue moon, or shake controller to 'fix' the flashlight gimmicks. Gyro aiming is still used but stuff like Zack and Wiki, I don't see that anymore.

That's a good development I think since motion controls seems to be at their best in a VR format.

Well we do know that zuckerberg's metaverse is based around pushing VR particularly the oculus, still apart from being in VR I have been there before with this
